The world of high-end prototype endurance racers has gotten a lot more interesting in the last year. While Audi has dominated the podium for the last few years at Le Mans, Toyota and Porsche have now returned to challenge the reign of the four rings.

Well Nissan has also announced that starting with the 2015 24 Hours of Le Mans->ke1591, it will also be looking to dethrone the king, and they are using the GT-R badge to lead the charge.

Now one quick look at the photo above will reveal that this is not a GT-R->ke1592 in the traditional sense. That profile looks a lot like every other LMP1 car, but I would expect the car to use a modified version of the GT-R powertrain and AWD system. Remember that 800 horsepower hybrid GT-R rumor? This may be what sparked it.

As it stands, we have absolutely zero information on what the car looks like, sounds like or any specifications, but needless to say it will be fast.

Keep your eyes here. We will have all the details as soon as we can get them. In the mean time we have included the video of the announcement and some information about Nissan's other current GT-R cars after the break.

You are all very aware of the world's love affair with the Nissan GT-R. Godzilla has conquered nearly every race track in the world, dominating cars that cost three and four-times as much cash.

Over the years Nissan has honed the GT-R formula, engine and advanced AWD system, to make the car faster and faster every year. With Nissan about to enter a car wearing the GT-R name into Le Mans, they decided to give us this great little infographic about the domination of the GT-R in the automotive world.

The first car on the list is the new GT-R Nismo. With a price tag around $150k, this is not exactly a cheap GT-R in the vein of the regular cars. That said, this new rendition of Godzilla is now the production-car record holder at the Nurburgring with a lap time of 7:08. In a time where companies are still happy to break the 8-minute mark with their production cars, Nissan is about to barrel into the sub-sevens.

And that is merely a production car. On the racing side of things, the GT-R GT3 has been doing racing thing around the entire world, and even took home the Blancpain Endurance Series title last year.

In the Japan-only Super GT racing series, Nissan has just released the 2014 version of their GT500 racer, and it has already started taking home podiums this season. Just after two races, Nissan already holds the lead in the points standings thanks to this machine.

With such a legacy to live up to, you can be sure that Nissan isn't going to put that GT-R badge on their Le Mans car unless they really think they can win.
