Nissan Skyline GT-Rs at the 2009 SEMA Show

The Nissan GT-R is by all means a bona fide super car and , however for anyone who is too old to have used a Playstation has been left in the dark about the cars that made those three letters so significant over the past two decades. That is because the most contact most people in the U.S. had with a Nissan Skyline GT-R was when playing Gran Turismo, or at an auto extravaganza like SEMA, and there were two fine examples on display this year in the Las Vegas Convetion Center. These were ultra exotic all wheel drive sports cars powered by a revolutionary low displacement high revving twin turbocharged straight six that pushed the Japanese Government’s limits with a reasonably priced package that was able to trump quite a few super cars of its day. Adding to the lore of the old Skyline GT-R; the ones that did make it to America with a DOT approval all came from the same import company, and they were found out to be crooked.

In 1989 the Japanese automaker revived the GT-R nameplate from the 1970s with the R32 Nissan Skyline GT-R. At the time the GT-R was a two door version of Nissan’s popular Skyline luxury sedan, something we were introduced to in America as the Infiniti G35 some years later. Back in the ’90s Nissan had to advertise their budget super car at 280 PS (275 HP) but Godzilla has been dyno’d to reveal closer to 350 HP coming from the RB26DETT under the hood. What was even better is that these car’s could easily be boosted to produce closer to 500 HP and there are even a few recorded 1000 HP runs by tuners who never had to crack the head gasket. In the U.S. the baddest car you could buy and then modify was a Toyota Supra, there are even models that can race against a Suzuki Hyabusa and win at 150 MPH, in Japan they said that when you got over your Supra you bought a GT-R.

This year’s SEMA Show featured two of the latter examples, one white on gold R33, a model that was made from 1995-1998 and got more curves and a bigger turbo. The other jaw dropping piece of high performance machinery was the highly coveted six speed R34, although Nissan ended production of the car in 2001 they came back with a rare proposition for 2004. Celebrating the twentieth anniversary of Nissan Motorsport International, the manufacturer offered to buy back 20 low mileage models which were stripped down and rebuilt to be Z tune GT-Rs. Making 600 PS from a race engine and shod with a set of beautiful black GT500 style Volk racing TE-37s, simply exquisite. Although the late model Rotora car is wearing a different set of wheels, it does have the Z tune style fenders with the vents at the top. It’s tuners cars like these that gave the GT-R its super car credibility; so now you know, and knowing is half the battle.

Me leaning to toyota in a lot of there products I have to say the GT-R is not a supra wannabe

First lets take out the fact about the LF-A , It can only be leased as naterade said, I love the price tag, and Uncia stop going around saying it holds the nurburgring record or has beat the GT-R, It hasnt been confirmed and the record lapping LF-A is not the retail version, Even if it was it is not worth over double tthe GT-R price tag for a few seconds.

How much praise has the GT-R got like honestly have you been on this planet the last year or so.

now I am not bashing toyota I love the supra I loved the Supra RZ 1997 I have driven them on more then one occasion and there amazing. I have never driven the GT-R of that time.

What I am trying to say is that this GT-R is 2009 it cant be a supra wannabe as a matter of fact what makes more sense is that the LF-A is a GT-R wannabe, an expensive GT-R wannabe

I just wanted to put my 2 cents in and naterrades resolution makes sense

I’m speaking in terms of stock Supras and stock Skylines, by the way. I am against aftermarket parts entirely.

You referenced a 1999 Supra... if we are speaking in terms of Skylines and Japan-spec Supras, then I’d take the Skyline anyday. American Supras are a different deal, however. The fastest Supra by quite a ways was the 1997/1998 USA-spec twin-turbo, which is what I refer to when I speak of Supras. Even the Japanese often ordered Toyota USA parts to convert their Supras to these models. If you are going to compare the MKIV Supra to a Skyline, you need to compare it to the R33, not the R34. The Supra went out of American production in 1998, while the R34 entered production in 1999. The Supra lapped the Nurburgring in 7:39; the R33 GT-R in 7:56. In an attempt to eclipse Toyota’s past model, Nissan released the R34, which still only acheived 7:41. I’m not saying that the Skyline isn’t a great car, because it is; it’s just that unless you’re racing in the rain, it can’t compete with the Supra.

You don’t have to lease the LFA - you can buy it flat out if you want to, but leasing is an option. Oh, and did that magazine article happen to be a Nissan advertisement?

Obviously, we will never agree with this subject so let’s just stop being like youtube bloggers. You’re a Toyota guy, and I respect that. I’m a Nissan guy, and to me, the GT-R is the flagship and icon of the Japanese sport car industry. To you its the Supra. Plenty of facts will back up the Skyline, and sure nothing will beat Toyota’s reliability, but the GT-R is in no way at all a Supra- wannabe

Right from the article. 1999 Nissan GT-R R34 would kill a 99 Supra Turbo any day, in every aspect. Nissan has always produced and will always produce the best line of cars out there, suiting every person’s wants and needs. LF-A i dont even take into the picture. I still consider is a concept car based on the amount they produced and the price tag, not even allowing purchases right away, having to lease the car for 2 years. I still will take a R34 over a Supra, and an R35 over an LF-A. And I’m sure there are many more people on this site that would agree.

The MKIV Supra was the first car to average over 70 mph through Road & Track’s slalom, the first car to pull 0.98g at the skidpad, the first car to lap the Nurburgring in under 7:40, the first car to stop from 60 mph in less than 110 feet, the first 4-seater to hit 60 in less than 5 seconds, and has received the highest consumer reliability rating of any turbocharged vehicle in history, to name a few accomplishments. No other car ever built has set as many records as the twin-turbo Supra did, let alone the fact that it cost a fraction of the price of its Italian and German "competitors."

Sure, the new Nissan GT-R is faster than the Supra almost any way you look at it, but it’s double the cost and has over a decade’s worth of new technology. You need to judge automobiles in respect to the time period in which they were produced. Is the GT-R the fastest slalom car in the world? No, but the Supra was. Can the GT-R beat everything else on the road on a skidpad? No, but the Supra did. Is the GT-R the fastest modern-day Nurburgring car? No, that’s what the LFA is for, but the Supra was. Can the GT-R, what with all its carbon-ceramic brakes and stuff even equal the 16 year-old Supra’s stopping times? No. And last time I checked, the Supra’s transmission didn’t and doesn’t tear itself apart after being raced a few times.

Come to think of it, has any Nissan in history ever come close to the reliability reviews of a comparably priced Toyota? No.

Umm... sorry toyota lover, but Skylines are far from Supra wannabees. Skylines have ruled the japanese sport car business of the past and of the present for tuners. I’ll take a GTR over a supra any day. I’ve got nothing against supra’s and they’re fast, you just seem to jump the gun to bash Nissan any time you can in any post. GTR>Supra
