The husband of the president of International Speedway Corp., the company that owns, among others, the Daytona International Speedway, was killed in the crash of a twin engine private plane he was piloting at about 8:30 a.m. today.

Dr. Bruce Kennedy, husband of Lesa France Kennedy, has been confirmed dead by the Seminole County, Florida Sheriff’s Department. According to the Sheriff’s department, four others also died from the crash: another passenger in the plane and three people on the ground, two of whom are reported to have been children. Two others, reported to have sustained burns when homes caught fire as a consequence of the crash, have been airlifted to the Orlando Regional Medical Center.

Lesa France Kennedy is the daughter of Bill France, Jr. She is also regarded by many outside observers as the smartest member of the third-generation of the France family, the family which, in effect, owns NASCAR.

Dr. Kennedy was piloting a Cessna 310 at the time of the accident. The plane apparently crashed into one house and fuel from the plane ignited a second home. The Federal Aviation Administration stated that the plane was on a trip from Daytona to Lakeland, Florida when the pilot reported smoke in the cockpit. The plane attempted to reach the Orlando airport for an emergency landing, but crashed 3.5 miles away from it.
