Porsche considers Ferrari 458 competitor

Porsche recently confirmed that their top of the line 918 Spyder will go into production and it would be the most expensive model they have ever sold coming in with a price tag of $845,000. Now it seems as if they are going back through their lineup to fill in some gaps they feel it has. Rumors suggest that the company has plans for another mid-engined supercar that will take on models like the Ferrari 458 Italia and the McLaren MP4-12C . Of course, there decision to go through with it will depend greatly on whether or not Volkswagen approves.

"We’re looking to extend the range," Porsche boss Mathias Muller revealed in a recent interview. "We’ve got an idea to do another mid-engined model. We’re thinking above the 911 but below the 918 Spyder.

We have ideas on styling and design, which we will continue to develop in the coming months. We’ll also evaluate the economic side and then decide [whether to push ahead]."

If built, the new model will be offered in both coupe and roadster versions and will be priced at about $275,000. It may also be constructed heavily of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic in order to get its weight down and performance up.

Power for the future Porsche supercar will have to be somewhere in the area of 550-600 HP in order to compete with Ferrari and McLaren’s resident supercars. The 458 Italia gets 570 HP and 398 lb-ft of torque out of its 4,499 cc V8 engine and the MP4-12C’s 3,800 cc twin turbo V8 engine delivers 592hp and 443 lb-ft. of torque. This power could be attained from Porsche’s 3,600 cc 620 hp water-cooled twin turbo flat-six found in the Porsche 911 GT2 RS .

Well, if they would really want to ave a good chance on this, they should come up with a great car. They can try using the 918 as a platform or they can come up with an entirely new design.

But the question is: is it really a wise move to take on the Italia immediately? Sure Porsche does have experience on this, but making a 458 competitor is a tough challenge.

But I still believe that they can actually do that. Anyway, instead of focusing too much on that, I think Porsche should also put a lot of effort on their hybrid programs since they have a pretty good lineup here.

You’re probably right about that one. Though Porsche did indeed came out with super car level models in the last two years, they still need to work on them to reach the level of the 458.

what’s new? Ever since, they been competing for who has the better model. Just Currently, Porsche GT3 has been competing against the new released model Ferrari FF. This would be an exciting and tough competition!

Well, if they would be considering the 918 as a base, they definitely would have a lot of work on their hands here. As it is, that one would not be suitable to face off with the Italia.

Yeah, it would be a geed thing to see what they can come up with against the 458. The soon to be released 918 Spider would actually be a good base for this one.

$845,000 for a car? I hope this 918 Spyder offers the best of industry and will meet all the expectations from its buyers. With such a price tag, I wonder what they offer in a car.

@ Artzt, remember that this just a rumor. Well, IMO, Porsche has the right to compete against the Ferrari and McLaren. These three are wonderful brand and i bet that this would be a tough competition.

They might be a little late, but it would still be worth a shot to see what they can come up with. And considering the work that they have in their previous models, they have a pretty good chance here.

Well now, that one is a rather bold move coming from them. Let’s face it, the 458 is already well established. But it would still be a good idea to see what Porsche could come out with.

This. Is. Amazing.
