Back in May, an image surfaced online suggesting that the McLaren P1 supercar lapped the Nurburgring race track in 6:33, breaking all the existing records for road-legal cars. That rumor was too good to be true, as McLaren ->ke284 offered an explanation that the image was just a "mood board" as inspiration to the design team.

Now, in the past month the McLaren P1->ke4608 was caught cruising the ring many times and rumor has it that the supercar->ke177 scored a time of 7:04, smashing the current official record of a production U.S.-street-legal car held by the Dodge Viper ACR with a time of 7:12.13 -- yes, the Gumpert Apollo->ke1056 and Radical SR8LM are both faster and road-legal in other countries, but not in the U.S..

Apparently McLaren is not very happy with the result and does not want to confirm the time, as the car was too slow. Rumors are bouncing around that a company source said that the lap time was about 5 seconds slower than initially expected. This make us hope that the P1 will end up doing a a sub-7-minute lap before McLaren decides to pull the plug on Nurburgring runs.

McLaren P1

The production version of the McLaren P1 was unveiled at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show next to its biggest competitors: the LaFerrari and the Veneno.

The P1 is powered by a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine that delivers a total of 800 horsepower paired with a a twin-clutch transmission with an embedded electric motor to create a total power figure of 903 horsepower and an estimated 1,100 pound-feet of torque at launch. This output should be enough to sprint the P1 from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.7 seconds and up to a top speed of 217 mph.
