BMW ->ke178 was established in 1916, so in 2016 the company will celebrate its 100th anniversary. To mark the event, the company will launch a hardcore version of the upcoming M4 Coupe.

While details on this new model are limited at this point, numerous BMW sources have indicated that the new M4->ke4183 will be similar to the M3 GTS the Bimmer launched in 2010. It will get more power, weight less, feature just two seats and a manual transmission.

When compared to the 2014 M4 Coupe set to be unveiled at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show->ke222, this hopped-up M4 will be about 220 pounds lighter. To achieve this drastic weight loss, BMW plans to use carbon fiber for the roof, trunk lid, hood and front wings, while the doors will be from aluminum.

BMW will keep interior equipment to a minimum, as it will remove the rear seats and replace the front seats with light carbon shells wrapped in lightweight Alcantara.

No details are available on the the engine just yet, but considering that the M3 GTS delivered a total of 450 horsepower (a 36-horsepower increase over the base M3), we expect the next M4 GTS to deliver around 465 horsepower from its brand new, six-cylinder engine.

2010 BMW M3 GTS

BMW unveiled the M3 GTS in 2010 as the fastest M3 ever. The model was powered by a 4.4-liter, V-8 engine that delivered a total of 450 horsepower. It could sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds and up to a top speed of 189 mph.

The M3 GTS was lighter than a base M3 because of the use of lightweight parts in the interior, the use of Macrolon for the car’s windows in the back, and the lack of air conditioning, navigation and radio.
