Our spy photographers have been at it again, capturing even more shots of the 2016 Audi R8 running laps at the Nürburgring. This time, we’ve got some fresh angles and different lighting revealing some details not previously seen in the last batch of photos.

A few of those details are noticeable in the rear three-quarter view and center around the rear window area. For starters, the vents flanking the rear window have a new shape. Gone are the open-top louvered vents, replaced by ones with long slats facing the window. A completely new vent is seen too. Just below the rear window lies a horizontal vent that likely expels heat from the mid-mounted engine. The addition makes sense when considering the supposed cooling issues Audi->ke14 had with the 4.0-liter twin turbocharged V-8. There’s still no word on whether that engine will be included in the R8->ke1440 lineup though.

Another newly spotted detail is the vertical slats in the large heat extractors just below the taillights. In previous R8s, the vents were horizontal, adding to the visual width of the car.

Up front, we see the swirly-wrap camo hiding what appears to be bulkier camouflage around the license plate disguising the R8’s production nose while the three main grilles are covered in thick mesh, keeping their looks a mystery.

Spy Shots

In our coverage surrounding the first crop of spy photos, we mentioned the new R8 will share its platform with the already-debuted Lamborghini Huracån and is expected to lose some 100 to 200 pounds from the R8’s current 3,461-pound curb weight.

Powertrain options are rumored to be carrying over from the current car which include the mighty 4.2-liter V-8 and the powerful 5.2-liter V-10. Transmission options will be carryover as well, being the six-speed manual and the seven-speed DSG gearbox.

2014 Audi R8 V-10 Plus

Audi has given the current R8 a small refresh as a send-off present. The 5.2-liter V-10 gets an extra 25 horsepower, bringing the total to 550. Additional weight-saving measures utilize carbon-fiber-reinforced plastics to bring the curb weight down. The extra power and reduced mass let the V-10 R8 hit 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds on its way to a top speed of 198 mph.

Audi has set the starting price for the manual transmission-equipped V-10 at $170,545 while the dual clutch is pricier at $179,645.
