Ever since the LaFerrari was unveiled at last year’s Geneva Motor Show , Ferrari aficionados have been dreaming about a track-exclusive version of the ultra-fast hybrid. Something in the vein of the FXX , an Enzo -based race car built in 30 units between 2005 and 2007 or even the F40 LM .
It took the Italians more than a year to admit they will be building one, but they finally did it a couple of days ago , when Antonello Coletta, chief of Ferrari’s Sporting Activity Department, said LaFerrari race car with the "XX" moniker attached to its name is underway.
Those of you that were still reluctant to the news will be quite happy to find out that a prototype version of the LaFerrari XX is already being tested. And to remove any trace of doubt, we have a batch of spy shots to prove it.
The mule showed up at the Nurburgring track (where else?), wearing nothing but its carbon-fiber suit. Interestingly enough, there are no aerodynamic-enhancing parts attached to the body (yet), but the supercar is obviously fitted with lightweight polycarbonate windows, mandatory for any lightweight, race-spec vehicle.

From what our sneaky spies found out during the day, the Ferrari crew used different sets of Pirelli tires, which confirms that the Italians weren’t visiting the Green Hell just for kicks. Moreover, it appears the mule was a lot noisier than the regular LaFerrari, an indication that something has already happened in the exhaust department.
You might be asking why not under hood? Well, with 963 horsepower at its disposal, we don’t think the LaFerrari XX needs a power bump. Ferrari engineers are likely to concentrate on improving downforce and working on a new suspension to enable the supercar to handle tight corners at higher speeds.
Why It Matters
The LaFerrari is obviously the pinnacle of Ferrari engineering, but that’s only available with road-going cars. The Ferrari FXX and its FXX Evoluzione ... ahem... evolution have kept their top of the league statuses until this very day. The latter is the track-exclusive Ferrari to beat, and we know the Italians will raise the bar once again with the LaFerrari XX. Moreover, think about what impact a limited edition, uber-LaFerrari will have. Maranello will score big with its customers through even more exclusivity.
