The next-generation E-Class (codenamed W212), will arrive in 2009, with the estate version (codenamed S212) expected for 2010. Not much information has been offered in regards to the upcoming fifth-generation E Class, but sources are speculating an increase of around 20mm in length. That, combined with a redesigned interior, will offer a more spacious feel to the passenger compartment. Mercedes will abandon SBC in favor of conventional brakes, but they will boast features such as wet-weather disc wiping and wheel-selective cornering brake control. An all-new instrument cluster, along with S-Class night-vision technology and an updated Comand system will highlight the interior changes. A more sculpted wide-frame grille, the more geometric nasal air intakes, and the wedge-shaped profile should give W212 a sportier stance. Driver assistance in general is a major theme for the new model. Expect lane-departure warnings, an eye-movement monitor, traffic-sign identification, road-condition sensors, and stability control that accounts for crosswinds, camber changes, and tire wear. Optional ceramic-composite discs could be introduced top-down, starting with the AMG models. The full-range of Mercedes engines will be available, in diesel and petrol variants. The basic powerplant will consist of four-cylinder engines with the horsepower rating starting at 175bhp, followed by 6 and 8 Cylinders and the performance-built AMG variant. | Full story Mercedes E-Class
