A concept of the 2008 Scirocco was shown at the 2006 Paris Auto Show, called the Iroc, which was then renamed Scirocco. It is said to share more in spirit and name rather than form with the original design

Volkswagen is weel known in  our days like a top mark in the car industry. But the beginings of VW were different. It was  a time when the people's car in Germany wasn't Phateon, but Golf. Scirocco was a model derived from the intended volume seller, in this case the Golf.

In June of 2006, VW officially announced production of a new Scirocco model at the Autoeuropa assembly plant in Palmela, Portugal. Volume is expected to be 100,000 cars per year, with the first Scirocco rolling off the line in 2008.

The VW coupe will probably join the VW lineup, with styling based on the cancelled Concept R shown at auto shows. It will probably be front-wheel-drive and share Golf engines. Expect engine choices to include the 2.0L turbo and possibly even the 3.2 and 3.6 V6 engines.

The entry-level model will likely get the just-introduced supercharged and turbocharged 1.4-liter Twincharger four from the Golf GT. It pumps out 140 hp to 170 hp.Above that, a turbocharged 2.0-liter like that in the GTI can deliver  230 hp. A 2.0-liter diesel four will also slide into the engine bay, but that oil burner probably won’t come to the United States.

Volkswagen also plans a Scirocco 4Motion , probably later rather than at the initial launch of the model. Expect it to use the new 3.6-liter 15-degree V6 with 280 hp. Transmission choices will include a standard six-speed manual, with the popular double-clutch DSG unit an option.

Volkswagen will build the Scirocco in Portugal on the same line as Eos.

Before the car goes into production, Volkswagen intends to streamline processes to ensure profits. If reports in Germany are believed, VW now loses money on every Golf it produces at home.

The old Scirocco was built for Volkswagen by the respected coachbuilder Karmann in the German city of Onsabrueck, they also built the Beetle based Ghia. The Scirocco was an unexpected hit in Germany, with 25,000 having been built 11 months into production, so from the very beginning the Scirocco was a key element of Volkswagens successful transition to a maker of quality. Both the Mark 1, 1974 - 1981 and Mark 2, 1981 - 1992 models are easy to identify as classic wedge coupes which both share the same floorpan and running gear.
