You know how everybody seems to trip over each other trying to score the iPhone 6 or the Samsung Galaxy S5 in time for the holidays? I should know because I’m trying to do the same thing as we speak. But if getting any of these smartphones is a problem, Tonino Lamborghini has a new smartphone that could make you forget that iPhone->ke3555 even exists. The phone is called the Tauri 88 and it’s got Lamborghini->ke44 luxury and all-world technology->ke1701 splattered all over it, all the way to its price tag.

Everything about the Tauri 88 screams “exclusive!” and that even includes its availability. Tonino Lamborghini’s only building 1,947 units of the Tauri 88 as a nod to the birth year of Tonio Lamborghini, the son of Lamborghini founder Ferruccio. The only downside to the phone is its price tag. If you want to be one of the lucky few to own the Tauri 88, you’re going to need $6,000 to buy one.

Yup. $6,000.

We suppose that anybody with the right kind of common sense won’t be coerced into shelling that kind of money for a smartphone, even if it comes by way of Tonino Lamborghini. Then again, we’ve seen purchases like this before and we’re almost certain to see them again. It’s just a little hard to fathom parting ways with that kind of money for a phone.

Tonino Lamborghini Tauri 88 in detail

We’ve seen a lot of finely crafted smartphones before, but this one’s on a completely different level. Not only does it have plenty of steel and leather in such a tiny package, but it also has the usual cadre of technological specifications normally attributed to premium smartphones. It’s got a five-inch, full-HD display, three inches bigger than the Retina HD display of the iPhone 6. Power isn’t a problem either because the Tauri 88 is powered by an Android 4.4 KitKat operating system and runs on a 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor with 3GB worth of RAM thrown into the mix. Oh, and if you’re the type who enjoys your daily dose of needless selfies, the Tauri 88 comes ready for such occasions, thanks to a 20-megapixel rear camera and an 8-megapixel front camera.

As far as its physical configuration is concerned, you’ll be happy to know that Tonino Lamborghini spared no expense in dressing up the Tauri 88. It’s got a steel case with numerous color options like black, gold, or plain steel. It also has copious amounts of leather, which even has a more colorful set of options, including red, orange, blue, or black.

Why it matters

Between its exclusive numbers and its astronomical price tag, I won’t be surprised if someone with this phone is the only one among his group of friends to own a Tauri 88 smartphone. We get why it’s so special. Heck, we even understand -- to a certain extent -- if somebody with deep enough pockets decides to buy one just so he can use it to validate his status.

But rational-minded everyday Joes like us can only go so far as to look at the phone, touch it and feel it a little bit and then give it back to a Tonino Lamborghini sales associate before we accidentally drop it or something.

So go ahead and buy the Tauri 88 if it suits you and your budget. Just don’t expect us to do the same thing. Now if somebody gives it to us for free, well then…
