Rolls Royce

TopSpeed: Why has Rolls-Royce decided that now was the right time to jump into the world of virtual racing with Forza Motorsports?

James Warren: With Wraith we presented the most powerful, dynamic Rolls-Royce in history. This placed the marque into the consciousness of a new generation, one that is perhaps more digitally savvy than ever before. We therefore felt the time was right to see how Wraith’s peerless driving experience could be replicated in such an innovative and immersive format.

TopSpeed: Does the all-new Wraith represent a new more dynamic side of Rolls-Royce that the company wants to capitalize on with the video game market?

James Warren: Wraith is certainly the most dynamic car the marque has ever produced, this, twinned with its bold fastback styling and thoroughly contemporary air has raised enormous interest. We’re really excited to hear how customers and enthusiasts enjoy Wraith in a highly dynamic, simulated environment.

TopSpeed: How do you feel the influx Forza Motorsports players to the brand will impact the perception of Rolls-Royce in the market?

James Warren: On launch, Wraith broke new ground in presenting a Rolls-Royce with a thoroughly involving, dynamic driving experience that retains the peerless quality of ride and luxury our customers expect. The car’s inclusion in “Forza Motorsport 5” will open this unique (albeit simulated) experience to a wide audience. We feel that those playing the game will enjoy the same surprise and delight at the car’s dynamic capabilities as our customers have.

TopSpeed: Rolls-Royce has a deep history with speed, but there is very little true wheel-to-wheel racing heritage. With the new Wraith, is RR looking to perhaps change that?

James Warren: It’s a little known fact that at one point in history, the Rolls-Royce R Engine held world speed records on land, on sea and in the air. However, Rolls-Royce’s very special brand promise has never included crafting cars with sporting pretentions. Indeed, our customers always expect the finest quality of ride married to peerless luxury derived from the application of the finest materials by our master craftspeople. With Wraith this is no different. Our customers use the car to travel great distances at pace, very much in the tradition of the cross—continental tourers of the 1930s. This is why Wraith has been ascribed the title ‘the ultimate gentleman’s gran turismo’

TopSpeed: Is there a chance that the new Wraith Drophead will also be coming to Forza when it is released?

James Warren: We recently confirmed that a Drophead model is currently in development and is due to enter the market in 2016. Beyond that, it would be inappropriate for us to comment on speculation surrounding the name.

Turn 10 Studios

TopSpeed: How much does it mean to the team to be the first ever video game to feature a licensed Rolls-Royce product?

TopSpeed: We are honored to say the least! Bringing Rolls-Royce to “Forza” was something we’ve wanted to do for a long time. Our goal has always been to ignite car passion in people who love games as well as car lovers, so it's exciting for us to create experiences that gamers just can't get anywhere else.

Fans will be able to fully explore Wraith in “Forza Motorsport 5”; from stepping inside the car via Forzavista mode and discovering the car’s exquisite interior detail, to letting Wraith loose on some of the world’s greatest racing circuits and experiencing the car’s raw power. Through the use of our custom-built graphics and physics engines, we’ve brought Wraith to life in “Forza Motorsport 5” and I expect fans are going to love it.

TopSpeed: How long has this been in planning, and how much time went into recreating the new Wraith?

TopSpeed: Bringing a car to life in “Forza” is a time-consuming process – at a minimum, it takes more than six months from start to finish. The reason it takes so long is the extreme care we take in building all of the cars from the ground-up for Xbox One. We use technologies like image-based lighting and physically modeled materials, which ensure that every aspect of the car is represented in precise detail.

TopSpeed: Rolls-Royce has a legendary reputation for providing nearly limitless interior customization options. Was there any difficulty in deciding how to create the interior or choosing a color pallet?

TopSpeed: The interior for Wraith featured in “Forza Motorsport 5” was based on a Wraith model we shot earlier in the year during our sourcing trip. One feature we’re especially proud of is the signature Starlight Headliner. Those fiber optic bulbs woven into the roof liner create the illusion of starlight overhead and add that extra touch of opulence that Rolls-Royce fans expect.

TopSpeed: If Turn 10 could re-create any other car from the history of Rolls-Royce what would it be?

TopSpeed: With such a long and storied history, it would be a difficult choice. That said, if you’re talking about pure speed, I think “Thunderbolt”— a specially designed Land Speed Record car from the 1930s – would be an interesting choice. The car held speed records throughout the 1930s and, while its shape was purely aeronautical, it was powered by two Rolls-Royce V12 “R-type” engines. This car was regularly hitting speeds well over 330 mph, and that was nearly 80 years ago!

TopSpeed: If there is a cost, will it still be free for Season Pass holders?

TopSpeed: The Rolls-Royce Wraith will be available starting on Aug. 12 as part of our latest update for “Forza Motorsport 5.” Wraith is just one of the new cars we’re adding to the game; other cars include the new Formula E race car, the all-electric 2014 Renault Spark SRT_01E which is also making its debut here in “Forza Motorsport 5” ahead of the inaugural Formula E season. We’ve also got the new 2015 Ford Mustang GT, two Infiniti models (the 2014 Infiniti Q50S and the 2014 Infiniti Q50 Eau Rouge) and the 2013 Vauxhall Astra 1.6 Tech Line Top Gear Edition, also known as the latest “reasonably priced car” from Top Gear fame. All of these cars will be available at no extra charge for “Forza Motorsport 5” players.

TopSpeed: Are there any other R-R cars coming to FM5?

TopSpeed: One of the unique things about “Forza” is that we continue to deliver cars year-round. There are nearly always cars in some phase of our production. We have multiple teams around the world who are always tracking down new cars to add to our ever-expanding roster. While I can’t reveal our exact plans about what cars are coming in the future, I can say that we are always interested in bringing models into the game that represent the full spectrum of car culture in all its infinite variety.

Well now you know all the details, folks. Now turn on the Xbox One and getting Wraith racing already!
