The holy grail of speed has always been the production car speed record. Car companies shoot for this record - if they can - in hopes that they can put their names in the history books. Some of them have succeeded and some have failed, but either way, these machines are fantastic.

Most of the cars on the list are very expensive and only built in limited numbers. You would be hard pressed to find any one of the top ten machines on normal streets. Hell, you would be hard pressed to find these cars on local tracks.

In order to get on the list, the car must be street legal, so no Formula One cars or land speed machines. The laws for getting on the list are also very tough, as there are no set rules. Nonetheless, the current fastest production car hit a speed of 267 miles per hour. Can you guess which car that was?

Hit the jump to find out.

10) Ferrari Enzo - 217 MPH

At one time this was the ultimate Ferrari->ke389. It is powered by a V12 workhorse with 660 horsepower. There are only 399 of these cars in the world. This was the fastest Ferrari to lap the test track, but the 599 GTO has since beat that time. This Ferrari typically trades above $1,000,000 at auction, making it just as expensive as the Bugatti Veyron.

9) Jaguar XJ220 - 217 MPH

The XJ200 held the record for the highest top speed of a production car at 217 mph until the arrival of the McLaren F1. The XJ220 shares a name with the normal XJ, but the two aren't related. Under the hood was a 3.5 L V6 with twin Garrett T3 turbochargers, generating 542 bhp. BBC Formula One commentator Martin Brundle drove the car to 217 miles per hour.

8) Ascari A10 - 220 MPH

Although it was designed for racing, the A10->ke1257 is intended to be a usable car on the road as well. It's an English built car with a modified 5.0-liter BMW V8 engine producing 625 horsepower. Only 50 A10s will be built, making this just as rare as anything else on this list.

7) Gumpert Apollo - 220 MPH

The car that held the top spot on the Top Gear->ke1860 test track can hit a speed of 220 MPH. The Apollo->ke1056 is produced by a German automaker in Altenburg, whom most people have never heard of. For those of you who like choice, there are three engine types available with the race version rated at 789 horsepower. The production of the Apollo started in October 2005.

6) McLaren F1 - 240 MPH

On March 31, 1998, the F1->ke1159 set the record for the fastest production car in the world at 240 mph. Despite only being fourth on the list, the car is still the fastest naturally aspirated car in the world. The car has a 6.1-liter V12 with 627 horsepower. In order to drive the car, the driver must sit in the middle, sort of like a Formula One car.

5) Saleen S7 Twin-Turbo - 248 MPH

This super Saleen is a very rare machine. Hey, look at that; we made a rhyme. The original S7 was rare, but this version won't be seen by many people. The motor is a V8 packing 750 horsepower. This twin-turbocharged monster went on sale for $585,296 in 2005.

4) Koenigsegg CCR - 245 MPH

Sweden making a high-performance car? That's like Lexus making a car that can compete with the BMW M3. Oh wait, they did that, didn't they. The CCR can hit a top speed of 245 miles per hour and it will hit 60 mph in just 3.2 seconds. The motor is a 4.7-liter V8 with four valves per cylinder, double overhead camshafts, and carbon fiber cam covers. The CCR->ke1119 didn't hold the record for very long, as the prototype Veyron took the title in 2005.

3) Bugatti Veyron - 253 MPH

The original Bugatti was once laughed at by the automotive press as a car that could never be built. In a classic foot in mouth moment, the Germans delivered the Veyron->ke1112 with a top speed of 253 miles per hour from an 8.0-liter W16 motor. What made this speed even more impressive was the Veyron's level of luxury and engineering genius. Sadly, it has become a bit of a fashion statement as of late with limited run specialty versions.

2) SSC Ultimate Aero TT - 256 MPH

The Ultimate Aero TT is a supercar built by Shelby in America. SSC tested the top speed capability of the Ultimate Aero TT on March 22, 2007. The car hit a recorded top speed of 256 miles per hour, beating the record held by the standard Bugatti Veyron. Under the hood is a 6.35-liter V8 motor.

1) Bugatti Veyron Super Sports - 267 MPH

As if the Veyron->ke1112 wasn't fast enough, the new Super Sports model is just insane. Under the hood is a motor capable of 1,100+ horsepower and speeds of 267 miles per hour. In order to get that kind of speed out of the car, Bugatti had to make the normal Veyron far more aerodynamic. On top of the speed record, the car was also the fastest around the Top Gear test track.

There you have it, the top ten fastest production cars on the road. Most people have never heard of a few of these models, such as the Ascari and the Gumpert, but people who know cars know these models. It's hard to imagine cars getting faster than the Veyron Super Sports, but we're sure it's only a matter of time before they do. The key has never been speed, most supercars can hit very high speeds. The trick is to make a car that can withstand the forces that accompany those speeds. Only time will tell.
