The long rumored rear wheel driveToyota/Subaru sports coupe will finally make an appearance at the Tokyo Motor Show this October. Each of the Japanese automakers will offer their own version of the affordable driving machine, that will be very similar in appearance, except for a few exterior details.

With the new Toyobaru, Kiichiro Toyoda’s car company is hoping to resurrect the fun to drive AE86 of the 1980s. The Toyota Corolla from two decades ago combined a lightweight chassis with a reliable four cylinder engine sending power directly to the rear wheels. Under the hood of the future hachi-roku will be one of Subaru’s flat four power plants that will use an all new direct-injection system that boosts output and increses efficiency. The 2.0 Liter boxer engine is tuned to produce an impressive 200 HP and 145 lb-ft of torque sending the car to 60 MPH from a standstill in about 6 seconds. Weighing in at around 2,700 pounds the 2012 Toyobaru should be just as sun to fling around as the legendary Sprinter Trueno.
