It certainly goes without saying that electric race cars still don't have the power of their standard engine counterparts, but that doesn't mean that we can't celebrate records of the electric car type when somebody sets one.

So with great pride, we'd like to congratulate Kevin Mitz and the Kleenspeed EV-X11 for setting a new electric car lap record at the Sonoma Raceway in Sonoma, California. The electric car, piloted by Mitz, secured a record-setting lap of 1:35.99 while hitting an average speed of about 93 miles per hour with a top speed of 130 miles per hour.

Despite the record-setting mark, there's still plenty of improvement left for the EV-X11 as far as its range is concerned. According to the car's founder, Timothy Collins, the EV-X11 can only run seven to eight laps on a single charge, or in the case of Sonoma, about 12 laps before it needs to re-charge.

Collins points out, though, that the continued evolution of battery technology offers plenty of room for improvement. “Every year the energy density of the lithium cells will be greater,” he told PC World.

While all that remains to be seen, it still doesn't take away from the achievement these guys accomplished last week. Breaking world records are hard to come by and when somebody sets one, it's something that's worth acknowledgment.
