Volkswagen Announces the First Worldwide Design Contest for Students

Of all the automakers in the world, only Toyota and probably General Motors can rival Volkswagen in terms of resources. And yet, for all of its resources, Volkswagen still wants to give young designers a chance to show off their talents courtesy of the first worldwide Volkswagen Design Contest.

The contest has been underway since May 5th, but there’s still plenty of time for young design talents to submit their best interpretation of a video game concept car for a video game. Sounds like it’s right up in the alley of the younger generation of designers all over the world. Interested contestants can submit their concepts no later than August 15, 2014, giving them a little over three months to come up with the best entry to the competition.

Once the deadline passes, the contest falls into the hands of a jury of experts, headlined by Klaus Bischoff, Head of Volkswagen Design. He and the management team of his design studio, will be tasked to name three winners with all three designers receiving six-month internships in the Volkswagen Design department in Wolfsburg.

The winners will be announced on September 30, 2014.

It’s a great opportunity for a lot of young designers to not only make names for themselves in the eyes of Volkswagen, but more importantly, to make a name for themselves in the entire industry.

Why It Matters

It’s an opportunity for students to be part of something that could define their future and that of Volkswagen. For these young upstarts, there’s no better avenue to showcase their talents to some of the best designers in the world. It doesn’t even cost anything to these students; all they need is a creative mind and a vivid imagination to create something that could get the attention of Volkswagen.

Volkswagen Announces the First Worldwide Design Contest for Students

Back in 2011, Volkswagen debuted its Design Contest with the same purpose as it does now: to find young designers that will become the future crop of the company’s design team. In its first incarnation, the Design Contest carried a theme "The first electrical Volkswagen for my country‚Ķ!" and was limited to students from China, Russia, and India.

Now, Volkswagen is taking its contest on a more global platform, giving other students from other countries a chance to join in on the fun, and hopefully, be invited to work as an intern in the real big leagues.

Press Release

The first worldwide Volkswagen Design Contest has been underway since 5 May. Young design talents are called on to submit concepts for an exciting car for a video game including video game scenario. Information on the contest can be found at www.volkswagen-design-contest.com. The closing date for entries is 15 August 2014. A jury of experts from Volkswagen Design will judge the contributions submitted. The three winners can look forward to a six-month internship in the Volkswagen Design department in Wolfsburg.

"Create a cool video game car for Volkswagen!" is the challenge for the first worldwide Volkswagen Design Contest. Students from the fields of interior and exterior design, interface design, graphic design and/or colour and trim design can submit concepts for a car that is perfect for a video game. The typical character of a Volkswagen should at least be somewhat recognisable. Students have almost four months to visualise and submit their ideas on three charts, either in individual work or as a team. The winners of the contest will be selected by Klaus Bischoff, Head of Volkswagen Design, and the management team of his design studio, and announced on 30 September 2014. Klaus Bischoff is looking forward to receiving lots of submissions: "We are always interested in the perspective and attitude of young designers to mobility topics and this is why we decided to take a new approach to finding fresh design talents with the Design Contest." The three winners will subsequently be invited to do an internship in the Volkswagen Design studio.

In 2011 Volkswagen successfully initiated the Volkswagen Design Contest with the theme "The first electrical Volkswagen for my country…!". This contest was aimed solely at students from Russia, India and China. As part of the international orientation of the company the contest is now open to students from around the world. The aim of Volkswagen in organising the Design Contest is to find talented students. At the same time the company is interested in establishing long-term cooperation with international universities and design academies.
