As time grows short before the Geneva Auto Show->ke228, automakers keep announcing their plans for showcased vehicles. In this case, Volvo has only issued a press release about the third and final member of a trio of concept vehicles->ke169 commissioned by Thomas Ingenlath, Volvo’s Senior Vice President of Design. Included in the trio are the Concept Coupe that bowed at the Frankfort Auto Show->ke235 and the Concept XC Coupe which won hearts at Detroit->ke222.
The new concept vehicle is still surrounded in secrecy, as the Swedish automaker hasn’t released a single picture of it. We’re left only to guess at what the class the vehicle will fall into and what it might look like. The only real detail that Volvo revealed is that this new concept will feature the Drive-E Powertrain.
The two concepts already in the public eye share many similarities – even riding of a modified version of the same platform architecture. It is probably safe to assume the third concept coming to the Geneva Show will sport many of the same cues and features.
Looking at the Concept Coupe and the Concept XC Coupe, its clear the two share the same design ethos. Futuristic lighting elements adornments, the same concave grille design, and many of the same interior features are common between the two. The XC Coupe concept is one of three design studies commissioned by Thomas Ingenlath, Volvo’s Senior Vice President of Design. It’s highly probable, this and the other two concepts will dictate the company’s future design direction.
The crossover is based on the company’s new Scalable Product Architecture. The platform makes use of new high-strength metals and design techniques that allow Volvo to reduce the size and weigh of a vehicle while increasing the level of safety that the company has come to be known for.
The XC Coupe features some innovative storage ideas in its cargo area and an interesting new method of routing the seatbelt straps. Exterior design cues that are likely to be seen in future products include the T-shaped daytime running lights up front and taillights that visually widen the crossover by following the outside wheel arches as they lights continue up towards the roof.
