Can you feel it? The nerdiness is growing stronger. Every passing day brings us a little closer to the release of ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi,’ and soon, we’ll all have a juicy heap of fresh pew-pew to indulge in. But before the official release on December 15th, we’re whetting out appetites with the first trailer, which arrives chock-full of laser-filled awesomeness designed to up your midi-chlorian count to remarkable new levels. We’ve examined the two-minute teaser in-depth and picked out all the cool vehicles contained within, because like you, we’re suckers for sci-fi engineering.

In total, we saw seven types of ships and vehicles worth talking about, including old favorites, and a few previously unseen machines we can’t wait to learn more about. Like any good trailer, ‘The Last Jedi’ left us with more questions than answers, but that’s half the fun right?

The speculation is strong with this one, so read on.

The Classics

Before we get into the new stuff, here’s a quick refresher on some of the ships and vehicles brought over from previous films. These should all be familiar to you, but the trailer still raises a few questions…

Millennium Falcon

Ah yes, the “fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy.” When it comes to iconic spaceships, it’s hard to beat the Millennium Falcon. Originally a Corellian YT-1300f light freighter, the Falcon has undergone extensive modifications to its weapons systems, defense systems, and of course, its hyperdrive, and although the ship is practically ancient in the timeline of ‘The Last Jedi,’ rest assured she’s still got a few tricks up her sleeves.

At the very least, the Falcon still seems to have a knack for turning enemy fighters into slag. But here’s the question – who’s flying it? The go-to answer has be Rey, given she’s flown it before and has the technical expertise required to keep it straight. But if she’s busy hanging out with Luke and training to be a Jedi, then it’s likely someone else at the helm, right?

Perhaps it’s Finn, fully recovered after his encounter with Kylo Ren at the end of ‘The Force Awakens.’ Or maybe its hotshot pilot Poe Dameron who gets the honor after his X-Wing, Black One, is blown up in the trailer. Or maybe Lando Calrissian comes back to help out in the war effort (although it should be said Billy Dee Williams denies his character appears in the new film).

All are definite possibilities, but at this point, we think there can be only one pilot worthy of taking Han’s empty seat – Chewbacca.

X-Wing

The X-Wing was an old standby for the Rebel Alliance, and it continues its mission with the Resistance against the First Order in the new movies. Armed with quad laser cannons and dual proton torpedo tubes, the X-Wing is highly versatile, capable of filling a wide range of combat roles, from escort duty to assault. In ‘The Last Jedi,’ the old-generation T-65 is replaced by the updated T-70, although the easily recognizable S-foil configuration is carried over.

TIE Fighter

Produced in huge quantities and in a variety of different configurations during the Rebellion against the Empire, the TIE Fighter is still the strike ship of choice for the First Order in ‘The Last Jedi.’ While it carries a lighter armament and fewer defenses than the X-Wing, the TIE Fighter is more maneuverable and cheaper to manufacture, giving the First Order the edge when it comes to numbers.

Interestingly, the trailer shows the latest TIE Fighters with an eerie red glow around the cockpit, perhaps signifying some kind of new pilot enhancement or targeting system.

Either way, it still looks like a giant bull’s-eye to me.

A-Wing

Seen only briefly during the trailer, the A-Wing will most definitely make an appearance in ‘The Last Jedi.’ Check out the tail and nose sections at the side of the screen in this shot with Poe’s exploding X-Wing:

Designed as an interceptor, the A-Wing is one of the fastest fighters in the Resistance fleet, and should do well in dealing with all those pesky TIE Fighters.

Assault Walkers

First seen in Episode V during the Battle of Hoth, the Empire was rather fond of employing a wide variety of armored walkers in its ground assaults, including the All Terrain Armored Transport (AT-AT) and All Terrain Scout Transport (AT-ST). The First Order has its own flavor of walkers, which can be seen in the distance in the brief shot above. Word has it they’re classified as AT-4X assault transports, so we’ll have to wait and see what new threat they might present – perhaps a defense against the ‘ole tow cable around the legs gag?

The New Stuff

Ready to draw some wild conclusions from very little evidence? Here we go!

Sand Miner

The first new ship we see is this hovering sand skiff, shown speeding towards an oncoming line of assault walkers just a few feet off the ground. The skiffs appear to be a bit rickety, with one of them bouncing off the landscape on the approach.

Rumor has it this scene takes place near an old Rebel base on the planet Crait, which is known for its highly valuable natural resources, leading us to believe that trail of red dust isn’t from the ships, but is in fact some kind of mineral-rich layer hiding underneath a chalky white top layer.

So what are these ships, then? It’s hard to say, but at first glance, they don’t appear to have the traditional beefiness of combat vehicles. Rather, they look more like mining craft that were hastily repurposed to thwart an unexpected threat.

Nebulon Corvette

Towards the end of the trailer, we get an eyeful of a large space battle filled with fighters embroiled in a massive dogfight. Playing support are these larger, rudder-shaped craft, which appear to be some derivative of the Nebulon B frigates used prominently in Episode V and VI.

One hypothesis is that these are essentially Corvette-class cruisers similar to the Corellian CR90 “blockade runner,” otherwise known as the very first ship you see in Episode IV. While smaller than the Nebulon B frigates, these pocket warships should still offer some serious punch for their size.
