Car Racing in any way shape or form: F1, WRC, Nascar, NHRA, drag racing, monster trucks and more

The inaugural FIA World Rallycross Championship is set to open its season this weekend at Montalegre, Portugal, and just ahead of the start of this new series, one team has already dropped teasers on the car it plans to use for the year. EKS is competing in the World RX Championship and its got a driver in Mattias who has won just about everything he’s competed in. More importantly, Ekström and EKS are preparing a hellacious race car in the name of the EKS Audi S1 Supercar.

The car itself is based on the Audi S1, except that this one has been modified and customized for the sole purpose of turning it into a powerful race car. Preparations to turn the EKS S1 Supercar into a full-fledged racer are already underway, and the early returns are nothing short of incredible. One of the details that has been divulged about the S1 is its powertrain, which comes in the form of a 2.0-liter turbo four with 600 horsepower, all-wheel drive and a 0-to-60-mph time of 1.9 seconds.

Ekström will be debuting the S1 Supercar in time for the World RX stage of Great Britain, the second race of the World RX season. The Swedish driver is going to compete against an impressive lineup of drivers that include Tanner Foust, Ken Block, and Jacques Villeneuve. But with a car like the EKS S1 Supercar at his disposal, we’re confident that Ekström and EKS will field a competitive team in the first season of the World RX Championship.

Honda is bringing some awesome hardware to run up the mountain in this year’s Pike’s Peak International Hill Climb . Honda has a storied history on the mountain including records for EV racers in ’94 and ’99 and last year Honda set the record for fielding the most O.E.M-sponsored vehicles in the most classes. They ran 11 cars in 10 separate classes.

This year Honda is returning to Pike’s Peak and it is bringing one of my favorite sports cars of all time, the first-gen Acura NSX . As one of the few Japanese supercars , it already deserves praise, but when you consider Honda used F1 racing legend Ayrton Senna to help design and sort the chassis, you have a true driver’s car for the ages.

It would have been amazing to see Honda field a new NSX prototype, but with the constant back and forth regarding that vehicles production, I doubt Honda even has enough parts together to create racing mule if they wanted to.

Apart from the NSX, Honda has planes to run a Fit EV, a B-Spec class Fit racer, a CBR600RR motorcycle and a TRX450 ATV in the event. Honda is also quick to point out that much of their ATV equipment is also being used by race officials to travel around the mountain.

While I am most interested in the NSX, Honda is also helping to power a Norma M20FC entrant in the Unlimited class. It looks like Honda is going all-in on Pike’s Peak, and that makes us super happy.

After setting a new Nurburgring lap record last year, the 2015 Nissan GT-R Nismo is set to make a return to the iconic German track in racing guise for the 24 Hours endurance event scheduled later this summer.

Dubbed GT-R Nismo GT3, the racing version of the ultra-fast supercar that lapped the "Green Hell" in 7:08.679 will sport an array of aerodynamic upgrades, including a wide-body kit with revised fenders and side sills, a race-spec rear diffuser and a large wing mounted atop its trunk.

Although the automaker declined to reveal any details in regards to the vehicle’s powertrain and chassis upgrades, the GT3 is obviously fitted with a stiffer suspension and benefits from several engine and transmission tweaks of the usual Nismo recipe.

Three Nissan GT-R GT3 vehicles will be entered in this year’s 24 Hours of Nurburgring - two will be raced by Nissan GT Academy Team RJN in cooperation with Nismo engineers brought straight from Japan, while the other one will compete under the Schulze Motorsport banner.

The factory teams will get four drivers each. The No.80 car will be manhandled by former Formula One racer Nick Heidfeld, who will be joined by GT Academy graduates Florian Strauss, Lucas Ordonez and Alex Buncombe. The No.30 car, on the other hand, will be driven by Nissan Super GT pilots Michael Krumm and Kazuki Hoshino, joined by Katsumasa Chiyo and Tetsuya Tanaka.

Lastly, the Nissan GT-R ran by Schulze Motorsport will benefit from the skills of Gran Turismo creator Kazanori Yamauchi and 2009 GT Academy winner Jordan Tresson.

While Peugeot is showcasing the "crude steel" Exalt concept car at the Beijing Auto Show , its motorsport division is releasing the details on the 2008 DKR, the company’s first vehicle to take on the grueling Dakar Rally in 25 years.

The French manufacturer retired from the said rally in 1990, after winning it four times in a row with desert-prepped versions of the 205 supermini and 405 sedan . Now, nearly a year after Sebastien Loeb crushed the Pikes Peak record in an all-carbon version of the 208 , Peugeot is announcing its return to Dakar with a vehicle based on the 2008 crossover .

Actually, we need to rephrase that to "loosely based on" the road-going vehicle, as the 2008 DKR has very little in common with the said crossover, save for the numeric name and a few design cues.

To be fielded under the colors of Team Peugeot Total in the 2015 Dakar, which is scheduled to begin next January, the 2008 DKR buggy will be driven by Carlos Sainz and Cyril Despres. Both have already won the rally, but while Sainz did it while driving a Volkswagen Touareg -based racer, Despres won the even riding KTM motorcycles.

Remember that odd Subaru teaser image that we showed you just before the 2014 New York Auto Show? Well, as predicted, this teaser was of the RedBull Global Rallycross car that is set to run in the 2014 season. Too bad though, we were really hoping for a special-edition 2015 Subaru WRX STI , but this is still pretty darn cool.

This rally machine is a unique-looking car that comes with all the bells and whistles of a tried-and-true dirt and gravel tosser. From the custom wide-body to the carbon-fiber, modified STI spoiler to the rally-car-standard roof scoop, Subaru Rally Team USA and Vermont SportsCar spared no expense to make the car as competition-ready as possible.

The interior of the WRX STI has been reconfigured for exclusive rallying purposes, so whatever luxury amenities the car had when it first came to life have been taken out and replaced with a host of racing equipment. So don’t go looking around for an audio system, navigation or a soft-touch dash; this thing is all racer.

Rounding out the rally makeover of the WRX STI is a new set of Method Race Wheels that have been wrapped in the series’ official Yokohama race-spec tires.

The 2014 RedBull Global Rally Championships holds its season-opening race on May 18th. Subaru Rally Team USA is expected to field a strong team with drivers Bucky Lasek and Sverre Isachsen, as well as Travis Pastrana and David Haggins, behind the wheel of the WRX STI GRC this fall.

Although many Aston Martin enthusiasts would rather have a DB9 or a Vanquish in their garage, sports car racing aficionados are more likely to go for the Vantage GT4.

Built to FIA GT regulations, which makes it eligible for the GTS class of the Pirelli World Challenge, the Vantage GT4 just got a racing series of its own in North America.

Open to just about anyone who can afford to purchase the sports car and pay the entry fees, the Aston Martin GT4 Challenge of North America will run its inaugural season over seven weekends. The gentleman racers will get a chance to prove their driving skills on famous U.S. track such as Watkins Glen, Laguna Seca , Road America and Sebring, but will also travel to Canada to hoon the GT4 on Circuit Mont-Tremblant.

2014 entrants will include IndyCar and prototype sports car driver Eliseo Salazar, who had driven for TRG-Aston Martin Racing in the past, as well as drivers that have less or no racing experience at all, such as Montreal Aston Martin dealer Joel Segal.

The inaugural Aston Martin GT Challenge of North America will commence on May 16th through 18th at Watkins Glen and will end on November 21st through 23rd at Sebring International Raceway.

For all of the cute little descriptions attributed to the Ford Fiesta, it’s important to remember that the hatchback has a racing soul hiding underneath its compact appearance. It’s not an accident that guys like Ken Block use the Fiesta for their racing exploits, and now, ahead of the Global Rallycross season, the Fiesta is once again taking center stage as the car-of-choice of Barracuda Racing.

Barracuda Networks, Inc, a leading provider of cloud-connected security and storage solutions, will be making its maiden foray into the world of rallying and it couldn’t have picked a worthier car to compete with than the Fiesta. If anything, it should serve veteran Bryan Herta and rookie driver Austin Dyne as they compete under the Barracuda Racing banner.

In order to compete in Global Rallycross, the team reconfigured the Fiesta to be an all-out powerhouse, tweaking the car’s engine to produce a staggering 600 horsepower, enough to hit 60 mph in just 1.8 seconds. In addition, Barracuda Racing also gave the Fiesta an impressive new livery that features a predominantly black finish with blue and orange trims spread throughout the race car . A huge rear wing spoiler and what looks like a roof exhaust have also been installed, largely attributed to improve the Fiesta’s performance and handling.

The competitiveness of the Audi R8 LMS ultra in GT world championships lends itself to the widely known belief that the car is as good a racer you can get. That competitiveness is expected to continue in the 2014 season, specifically at the Nurburgring 24 Hours where as many as eight R8 LMS ultra cars are tipped to compete.

Ahead of the actual 24-hour race this coming June, the R8 LMS ultra was put through the paces over the weekend in qualification for the endurance race. While it failed to upend the BMW Z4’s dominance, don’t expect for one second that the R8 LMS ultra won’t be a contender when the real race at the "Green Hell" commences this coming June.

All in all, five teams will be fielding the R8 LMS ultra at the 24 Hours of Nurburgring, with some notable drivers in the mix, including Le Mans winners Frank Biela, Marcel Fässler, Stéphane Ortelli, and Marco Werner. These four drivers have accounted for 11 wins at the ’Ring, and will be complemented by former GT1 World Champions Marc Basseng and Markus Winkelhock, defending FIA GT Champion Laurens Vanthoo, and three-time Porsche Supercup Champion René Rast.

That’s as good a lineup to drive the R8 LMS ultra at the 24 Hours of Nurburgring. It’s going to face some stiff challenges, especially with the BMW Z4 and the defending-champion Mercedes SLS AMG GT3 in the fold. But don’t expect the R8 LMS ultra to just sit idle and let the rest get the spoils. The racer is tipped and ready to make some waves when the endurance race kicks off this coming June.

Formula DRIFT Long Beach bydriftstream

The tires are just getting warmed up on the Streets of Long Beach at Round One of the 2014 Formula DRIFT taking place today and tomorrow (April 4-5) in sunny southern California. Marking the start to the 11th season for one of America’s fastest growing motor sport, Formula D can be viewed LIVE right here on TopSpeed via DailyMotion.

As the season progresses through the summer, the championships will be hosted all over the country before the final round is concluded October 11th in Irwindale, California at the unofficial “House of Drift” and birthplace of American drifting motorsports, the Irwindale Speedway.

Formula DRIFT seasons consists of two-day meets or “Rounds” where drivers compete against a set of criteria before a panel of judges who look for the best used techniques, skills, and control. Three major areas of each driver’s run are scored: line, angle, and style — with each worth a certain number of points as follows.

Line judge can award up to 25 points + 10 points for Style
Angle judge can award up to 25 points + 10 points for Style
Style judge can award up to 30 points
Total maximum points is 100

For more information on Formula DRIFT, check out their website here. But be sure to give the live stream a watch. It’s an unbelievably exciting motorsport with tons of tire smoke, revving engines, and sideways shenanigans.

As spring kicks in each year, Jeep and Mopar are gearing up for the annual Easter Jeep Safari in Moab, Utah, by creating some of the greatest off-roaders which, unfortunately, we can’t buy.

Last year, for instance, the Chrysler -owned brands have come up with the extreme Wrangler Sand Trooper II perched on 40-inch bead-lock wheels, the lightweight Wrangler Stitch , and the production-friendly Grand Cherokee Trailhawk II Concept .

For 2014, Jeep and Mopar are storming Utah highly-anticipated event with another half-dozen of unique climbing-capable machines. Among them, visitors will be able to get up close and personal with a more extreme take on the redesigned 2014 Jeep Cherokee.

Dubbed Cherokee Dakar, the crossover concept pays tribute to the grueling African (err, South American) safari rally with its off-road-spec suspension, massive sand-digging tires and flared wheel arches. From the teaser, it appears that the dark-grey body is complemented by a red window trim, while the two-tone rims benefit from the same contrasting hues. Additionally, the concept will get to keep the Cherokee’s standard red tow hooks.

There are no clues as to what might be hiding under the hood, but we’re not hoping for more than a 3.2-liter Pentastar V-6. Not that we wouldn’t love to see a Hemi V-8 in there, but the Cherokee’s bay is not roomy enough for a 6.4-liter mill

Updated 04/10/2014: Jeep unveiled the official details on the new Cherokee Dakar concept set to be unveiled on April 12 at the Jeep Easter Safari.
