Auction houses like Barrett Jackson are the perfect places to find special edition vehicles. All you need is steely determination, glass full of patience, and pockets full of cash - in some cases, more than that.
Recently, a special edition Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 was auctioned off at Barrett Jackson in Las Vegas, raking in an estimated $250,000 from some deep-pocketed bidder who you might have heard of: NASCAR Sprint Cup team owner Rick Hendricks.
This particular Camaro->ke248 is noted for being the first production Camaro ZL1 to find an owner - good job, Mr. Hendricks! - and while it's being touted as such, it's actually the 69th ZL to be produced by General Motors.
So why is it a special edition?
For one, it's being advertised as an anniversary model of the 1969 Camaro ZL1, hence the 69th model designation. It's also the only Camaro ZL1 to be dressed in a Carbon Flash Metallic exterior paint finish, making it a true one-of-a-kind. The only downside is that General Motors decided against tweaking the muscle car's outstanding 6.2-liter V8 engine producing 580 horsepower and over 550 lb/ft of torque. But even without the engine upgrade, the ZL1's numbers are still mighty, mighty impressive.
Hendricks shelling out around a quarter-of-a-million might be a little too steep given the circumstances, but the NASCAR team owner and car dealership mogul should be comforted in knowing that proceeds from the sale of the ZL1 '69 Carbon Flash' will go directly to the YMCA of Southern Nevada.
