Unlike the Ford Mustang->ke428, which has been produced continuously since its initial introduction in 1964, the Chevrolet Camaro->ke248 took a seven-year-long break from 2003 through 2009. It took GM->ke1024 a couple of years to realize the importance of a muscle car->ke507 in its lineup, but it finally launched the fifth-generation Camaro in 2010.

Underpinned by the Zeta platform developed by Holden->ke33, the new Camaro rolled out with a range of V-6 and V-8 engines, which was just enough to compete with its long-standing Detroit rivals -- the Ford Mustang and the Dodge Challenger->ke249.

Mildly updated with each model year, the fifth-gen Camaro received its highly anticipated facelift in 2014, gaining new fascias, redesigned headlamps and taillights, and enhanced interior features. Despite the refreshed body is only going into its second model year in 2015, the sixth-generation model will step in to take center stage in 2016.

Exterior

The Chevy Camaro received a number of changes for the 2014 model year, all contributing to its new, meaner appearance. Up front, the headlamps and the grille are significantly slimmer, with the hood leaning a bit more over the car's nose. Moving lower on the bumper, the intake is much larger, while the fog lamps have had their old, rounded surrounds replaced with rectangular pieces.

Around back, the new fascia includes a reshaped diffuser, new-style exhaust pipes and a redesigned decklid spoiler. The most important modification, however, lies in the LED taillights, which have become one-piece units. The new design is an attempt to establish a link between the current model and the 1960s Camaro, but the setup isn't very inspiring.

Moving on to more specific upgrades, the SS model gained a vent-style hood similar to that seen on the brawnier ZL1, while the RS package comes with a unique front grille, 20-inch, aluminum wheels and a body-colored antenna. Speaking of wheels, aluminum rollers are now standard across the entire lineup, meaning no more black steelies for the base model. The LT and the 1LS trims have 18-inch shoes, the 2LT comes with 19-inch rims, and the SS and anything above it are fitted with 20-inch wheel-well fillers.

Interior

The interior updates list for the 2014 model year is short, including new Recaro front bucket seats for the SS and ZL1 coupe models, a color heads-up display and a color driver information center. The latter two are standard on the 2LT, 2SS and ZL1 models, and are buyer options on the remaining trim levels. Lastly, a new, optional accent trim package will add a dash of blue to the cabin.

The other features are carried over from the 2013 model, which means customers get six-way adjustable seats with leather trimming included in the 2LT and 2SS bundles, a standard driver's foot rest, power windows and a three-spoke, leather wrapped steering wheel.

Complementing the updated MyLink infotainment system is a standard six-speaker sound system, but buyers can opt for a Boston Acoustic nine-speaker unit. The latter audio system is standard on the 2LT and 2SS trims.

As far as interior colors go, customers can dress the cabin in Black, Beige, Gray and Inferno Orange, or Blue, with most of them including contrast stitching on the steering wheel, center console and the seats. Additionally, the SS models receive "SS" embroidery on the Recaro seats' headrests.

Drivetrain

The base Camaro carries a 3.6-liter V-6 that generates 323 horsepower and returns 30 mpg on the highway. More ponies are available from the 6.2-liter, V-8 mill that comes in two flavors in the SS. The milder configuration delivers 400 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque, while the brawnier plant generates 426 horsepower and 420 pound-feet. The 400-horsepower unit mates to the automatic transmission, while the 426-pony V-8 combines only with the manual transmission.

All 2014 and 2015 Camaro models can be equipped with either a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed automatic transmission with TapShift. Manual choices include an Aisin AY6, which is standard on the base model, and a Tremec TR 6060 that comes with the SS.

Suspension and Brakes

Each Camaro is equipped with a fully independent front and rear suspension, with the latter featuring a unique, L-shaped upper control arm that attaches to the knuckle at one end and incorporates a ride bushing in the rear. Chevy offers four different suspension packages depending on trim level, with a performance setup available for the SS coupe and the 1LE bundle. Braking power comes from standard disc brakes at all corners, but only the SS models benefit from Brembo four-piston calipers.

Prices

The 2014 Chevy Camaro retails from $22,550, which includes a $2,000 cash back offer. The LT models are priced from $24,850, while the SS fetches at least $32,350. Pricing is expect to remain the same for the 2015 model year.

Competition

2015 Ford Mustang

In its last year on the market, the 2015 Chevrolet Camaro will have to face the brand-new Ford Mustang. Equipped with an independent rear suspension across the entire range for the first time, the sixth-generation pony will roll out with similar V-6 and V-8 engine options as the 2014 model, plus a 2.3-liter, four-pot EcoBoost in between. The V-6 will deliver a little more than 300 horsepower, the EcoBoost will have at least 305 ponies on tap, and the Coyote mill promises to generate at least 420 horses.

The updated interior comes with a more upscale finish, Ford's latest in terms of technology and a bit more room front and back. Pricing for the 2015 Mustang begins at $24,425 for V-6 and from $25,995 for the EcoBoost version. The range-topping GT will carry a sticker set at $32,925.

2015 Dodge Challenger

Chrysler's own pony also received an update for the 2015 model year, which means it will hit dealerships with a refreshed exterior, a revised interior and a brand-new, eight-speed automatic transmission. The vehicle's new styling draws inspiration from the 1971 Challenger and features a split front grille, separated taillights and a pronounced, power-bulge hood.

A new center console, a drive-focused instrument panel, and various aluminum inserts and leather-wrapped surfaces round up the interior changes. The updated 8.4-inch infotainment system is joined by a 7-inch TFT instrument cluster. Performance-wise, the V-6 delivers 305 horsepower, the 5.7-liter V-8 churns 375 horses, while the larger 6.4-liter V-8 cranks out 485 ponies. Pricing is not yet available, but we expect the 2015 Challenger to begin from around $26,000, making it more expensive than both its rivals.

Conclusion

Despite the lack of updates for the 2015 model year, the Chevy Camaro remains a strong contender in the muscle car market. While it will fall behind the brand-new Mustang, the GM pony will manage to maintain its position above the Challenger, even though the latter just got an array of updates inside and out. Can't wait until the next-gen Camaro rolls out? Then you might as well go for the current model, you're looking at a lot of muscle car for the buck.
