Chevrolet->ke199 expanded its Sonic->ke3744 lineup with the addition of two new sedan models: the Sonic RS and Sonic Dusk. Both will go on sale in spring 2014 and will be manufactured at Orion Assembly in Michigan. The first of them, Sonic RS, will be priced at $20,530 including $825 destination.

The new Sonic RS sedan is offered with the same Ecotec 1.4 liter turbo engine found in the Sonic RS hatchback, which delivers a total of 138 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. The engine is mated to a standard six-speed manual or an optional six-speed automatic.

There will also be a sport-tuned suspension and lowered ride height for better handling and a sportier look. Fuel economy will also be identical to the hatchback at 27 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway on manual transmission-equipped models.

Pros
Cons

Exterior

Front Detail

When compared to the rest of the lineup, the RS version features a more dramatic fascia, with a deep air-dam design and vertical intakes on the edges of the fascia.

Rear Detail

There is a telling "RS" logo on the rear, plus a choice of three colors: Black Granite Metallic, Silver Ice Metallic or Summit White.

Interior

The interior will also be differentiated by a Jet Black trim combined with aluminum sport pedals, and a three-spoke, leather-wrapped steering wheel with contrasting stitching and a racing-inspired, flat-bottom design. The front bucket seats are also wrapped in leather and feature a cool red RS logo.

Drivetrain

Chevrolet dropped its 1.4-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine in this new Sonic RS, netting the model 138 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission drives the front wheels as standard, but an auto transmission with a 3.53-to-1 final drive ratio is available.

Pricing

There are no details on pricing just yet, but we expect it to be the most expensive sedan variant, easily cresting the LTZ's $19k mark.

Competition

2014 Ford Fiesta Sedan

The Fiesta is the Sonic's arch nemesis, especially with its all-new 1.0-liter, three-cylinder EcoBoost engine that puts down a mean-for-its-size 123 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. This boosted engine should be enough to get the sedan to 60 mph in about 9 seconds.

The Fiesta SE with the 1.0-liter engine bases at $17,240.

Conclusion

Sure, this isn't anything mind blowing from Chevy, but it does eliminate the "why is there no RS sedan" question. Nice gap filling going on at GM this year.
