When the checkered flag finally fell at the 2014 Daytona 500 late Sunday night, it was over Dale Earnhardt Jr .’s Chevrolet SS -inspired Sprint Cup race car . Earnhardt’s win came after a long day of racing and waiting with several multi-car pile-ups and an excruciating six hour rain delay.

While Earnhardt’s Chevy SS took much of the spotlight, it wasn’t the only SS circling the steep banks at the Great American Race; not considering the other tube-frame SS-look-a-likes trailing behind Jr.’s number 88 car. Pacing the race was the real deal, a 2014 Chevrolet SS modified only with safety strobe lights and Daytona 500 decals.

The SS is powered by GM ’s 6.2-liter LS3 V-8 making 415 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of rear-wheel-spinning torque. A six-speed automatic with paddle shifters sends power to the rear differential sporting a 3.27:1 final drive ratio. Unfortunately, this four-door Camaro isn’t offered with a clutch pedal, but the automatic does allow for fairly quick shifts.

Inside the SS is a cabin showcasing GM’s new-found efforts in interior quality with materials and fit and finish on par with offerings from Cadillac and Buick . Heavily bolstered leather seats, a leather-covered steering wheel, and suede-like material give the car an upscale feel while buttons and controls have a weighted, rich feel to them.

For pacing duties, the SS is fitted with an aerodynamic light bar up top and strobes in the head and taillights. Daytona 500 decals and stripes are stuck to the SS’ Red Hot 2 paint color. Lower profile tires and optional chrome wheels further separate the car from regular production units.

Updated 07/18/2014: Chevrolet announced today that actor Chris Pratt will serve as pace car driver on July 27 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He will drive a 2014 red and silver Chevrolet SS pace car and apparently its a dream come true for him. Of course, the announcement comes with a new set of images of the SS Pace Car, so check them in the "Images" tab.

The Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is the fastest and most powerful production Camaro to ever roll out of a General Motors factory, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be improved. For the 2014 Camaro ZL1, Chevrolet has given the supercharged monster a visual overhaul, added some new equipment and changed what colors are available.

The result is a Camaro that looks better and performs better than ever before. With a Nurburgring lap time of 7:41, it also performs better than a massive collection of machines on the road today. From the aggressive body kit and the louvered hood, to the gargling and barking exhaust note, the latest ZL1 is ready to take care of business.

What hasn’t changed is the engine. The ZL1 is still powered by a supercharged V8 based on the incredible motor from the Corvette ZR1 . It is one of the most powerful production V-8s in the entire world, and it turns the Camaro into one of the fastest cars in the world.

Updated 05/23/2014: Chevrolet announced today details for the 2015 Camaro ZL1, with the only updates for the new year including the addition of a new Blue Velvet Metallic exterior paint. This is the final model year for the fifth-generation Camaro.

With over 800 horsepower under its hood (actually, it’s 836 ponies), this is the most powerful Chevrolet Corvette Stingray in the world — at least as of February 8th, 2014.

We doubt somebody has one-upped it in 11 days, so we’re more inclined to believe that Late Model Racecraft really has the most powerful ’Vette Stingray in its hands.

In this video, you not only get to see the Corvette exhibiting that throaty roar in full ear-splitting fashion, but you also get to have that treat of watching a beautiful brunette get to experience the unmitigated power of this heavily tuned sports car with a camera focused on her cute dimpled face.

Far be it for us to judge LMR’s taste in women — impeccable, if you wanted to know — the true highlight of this video is that heavily juiced American sports car that absolutely looks and sounds bonkers in a straight line.

The Chevy Sonic doesn’t get much pub on these pages, as it’s not necessarily a car that inspires you to hit the race track. Rather, it is a relatively timid hatchback /sedan that gets outstanding mpg and has a low MSRP. Well, today is an exception, as the Sonic RS has just been part of a rather entertaining world record.

Rob Dyrdek , just two years removed from completing a 360-degree kick-flip in a Sonic, decided he wanted to see how far he could jump the compact hatch. That in itself isn’t all that impressive, but the fact that he did this jump in reverse certainly piqued my interest a bit.

Dyrdek managed to clear a gap of 89 feet 3-1/4 inches in reverse, putting himself and the Sonic into the Guinness Book of World Records. Nice work, felas...

And to think, I know some people that can barely back out of a garage without nearly killing themselves, and this dudes jumping cars nearly 90 feet in reverse. Check out the above video to see the record-breaking run.

Chevy has graced visitors of the Chicago Auto Show with news about its new 2015 City Express van. While we traditionally have a good idea about what is going to be revealed a few days ahead of time, this came out of left field.

The Nissan NV200 -based van is little more than a Chevrolet rebadge, but it gives Chevrolet a tool to use against the Ford Transit at a minimal cost.

If you are looking for a smaller way to haul your kids, you are still going to need to look at the Mazda5, as City Express is purely a functional machine. It has two seats, and a load of cargo room; that is it.

Still, there is a lot to love about this little Chevy, so click on through to find out all the details from its drivetrain to its max cargo capacity.

It is with a heavy heart that I must inform you that there has been a tragic accident at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green Kentucky. A large sinkhole opened under the museum and a portion of the Skydome floor has collapsed, taking eight Corvettes with it.

Two of the cars were on-loan form General Motors , a 1993 ZR-1 Spyder and the 2009 ZR1 “Blue Devil” . The other six cars were all museum-owned - 1962 Black Corvette, 1984 PPG Pace Car, 1992 White 1 Millionth Corvette, 1993 Ruby Red 40th Anniversary Corvette, 2001 Mallett Hammer Z06 Corvette, 2009 White 1.5 Millionth Corvette.

Thankfully none of the cars damaged were on loan from individuals, and many of the museums most valuable pieces were not affected. As of yesterday at 17:12 hours, the NCM posted to their Facebook that all remaining vehicles in the Skydome had been removed to prevent further damage.

Among the cars spared from the destruction was the Museum’s irreplaceable 1983 Corvette, the only model ever produced for that year.

Chevrolet Cruze

It’s no secret that General Motors has been working on a update for the hot selling Chevrolet Cruze. We’ve seen spy shots of camo-covered Cruzes before, but none have been so revealing as these.

Looking past the digital zebra print, it’s apparent the 2015 makeover will be fairly extensive. The windshield is more steeply raked, while the rear roof section gets a more coupe-like fall towards the C-pillars. The front fascia is much lower and pointed than before with a more aggressive stance. The larger, reshaped grille starts a belt line that runs over the headlights, through the finders, and circles around to the rear taillights. The exterior door handles have been repositioned further up, integrating within the belt line.

Out back, reworked taillights look more detailed, while the third brake light is been moved to the trunk lid in the from of an LED light bar. The rear fascia is more detailed as well with a black, non-functional spoiler at its base.

The interior of the 2015 Cruze is said to be much more upmarket with a new, large touchscreen and revamped multifunction steering wheel. Stitching and chrome accents abound on the instrument panel and then carry throughout the cabin. Also visible is an “Eco Mode” button, a voice command button, and a lane-departure activation switch. Park assist looks to be among the switchgear as well.

Unfortunately for U.S. buyers, the Cruze will likely go on sale in other countries a few months before production ramps up within the two U.S. plants. General Motor rolled out the current Cruze in the same manner in order to deplete dealer inventory of older models the Cruze was replacing.

The launch of the revised 2014 Chevrolet Camaro also marked the return of the Z/28 nomenclature. The Z/28 name was initially used back in 1967 when a special Camaro was designed to compete in the Sports Car Club of America’s Trans-Am 2 class. Now, for the 2014 model year, the Z/28 nomenclature is applied to the most capable and fastest Camaro currently available on the market.

The new Camaro Z/28 was not built to compete in a specific race series, but it features track-focused capabilities. When compared to the ZL1, it is significantly lighter and, even though it is no more powerful, it is around three seconds faster around Chevy ’s testing track than the Camaro ZL1 . Also, as a tribute to the original Camaro Z/28, the new generation is only offered with a manual gearbox.

Updated 02/25/2014: Chevrolet unveiled a new video, explaining how the Performance Traction Management system helps the new Camaro Z/28 delivering faster laps on the race track.

You might be wondering why Chevrolet would be developing the next generation of its popular Spark so soon. After all, 2013 was the Spark’s first year in the U.S. While the likeable little subcompact was new to us last year, the overall design has been in production since 2009 and sold in countries around the world as the Chevrolet Beat.

The aging Beat (Spark) is due for a refresh and the General looks to be making a clean sweep.

Not much is know about the prototype seen here as it scurries about during cold-weather testing near the Arctic Circle. The redesign will likely be more evolutionary in nature, and will feature a heavily updated grille as evidenced by the thick camouflaging.

The Spark has sold well in the U.S. over its first year, selling 26,869 units — 35 percent beyond what Chevy had originally forecasted. Worldwide sales total 720,000 units since the model’s 2009 introduction.

An all-electricSpark EV came to market for 2014 and has sold over 400 examples in the EV’s limited markets of California and Oregon. The EV has a range of 82 miles on a single charge (7 more than the Nissan Leaf ), and is powered by an electric motor that produces 140 horsepower and an impressive 400 pound-feet of torque.

The standard gasoline model isn’t quite as powerful, as its 1.2-liter I-4 puts out a scant 84 horsepower and 83 pound-feet of torque. But at only 2,269 pounds, the Spark doesn’t need much more for its inner-city intended purpose. Both a manual and CVT are available in the gasoline-powered Spark.

Sports cars continue to infiltrate the silver screen in superhero movies, and now it is the Corvette Stingray ’s turn to have a taste of Hollywood fame. In the new "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" movie that is due out on April 4th, Black Widow — one of the many S.H.I.E.L.D. superheros — will drive an all-black 2014 Corvette Stingray .

There are no specifics on this deep, gloss-black `Vette, but it will be on display at the 2014 Chicago Auto Show . Unfortunately, the stunning and dangerous Black Widow herself will not be there. But, Chevy will be passing out a limited-edition Captain America comic book to commemorate the collaboration of Marvel and the Stingray.

On top of the gloss-black paint job, the initial images of the Black Widow Stingray show a set of black rims that help complete this the package. Stay tuned for more details on the 2014 Corvette Stingray Black Widow, but don’t look for a special edition model in dealers, as I’m pretty sure this car is for the movies only.
