Citroen 2 CV

Citroen 2 CV

The Citroen 2CV is a classic French automobile, just this past September at the Frankfurt Motor Show we saw the Citroen Revolte concept, a design that would preview the rebirth of the legendary Citroen. It would appear that the concept stuck because the French automaker has announced plans to introduce a compact hatchback called DS2 for 2012 with the same spirit of the original 2CV.

As opposed to the concept, the road going DS2 will feature a more conventional double-chevron Citroen grill as well as larger headlights and a bit narrower track. Although the future car’s bonnet creases, arching roofline and flat back end remain reminiscent of the classic 2CV. The DS2 will be built on the current Citroen C3 platform and will make use of the same engines, the range will include a few fuel efficient three cylinder petrol motors as well as a 70 HP 1.4 Liter HDi diesel version.

2009 is the 60th anniversary of the Citroen 2CV (deux chevaux): the quirky little car that got France on wheels and is as iconic to Citroen as the original Beetle is to Volkswagen Volkswagen . To commemorate this anniversary, Citroen decided to give the little budget-minded car an upgrade. The company chosen by Citroen to design this edition was Hermes, the well-known French designer whose last automotive project was the slightly more upscale Bugatti Veyron FBG by Hermes .

1989 Citroen 2CV 6 Special by Hermes

The 1989 Citroen 2CV 6 Special chosen for the project was one of the latest produced models (production was finally stopped in 1990.) This includes a new repainted body in brown. Inside there is a natural leather trim on the door panels, interior rearview mirror, new gear knob, steering wheel and seats.

This 2CV better be something good to look at. The 29 hp on tap from the 602cc two cylinder engine means it isn’t going anywhere fast.

If the Italians can reach into their past for inspiration (Fiat 500 and the 2010 Topolino) why can’t the French? Citroen may bring a design proposition of a new CV this autumn at the Paris Motor Show, just in time to celebrate the company’s 60th anniversary.

Citroen 2CV to make a come back at the Paris Auto Show?

This design was created by French designer David Portela, which gave a few ideas to Citroen about resurrecting the little car back in 2005. So, we’ll just have to wait for the Paris Auto Show to see if Citroen wants to visit its past.
