The record-shattering $27 million dollar auction price of the ultra-rare 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4*S NART Spider is making waves through the entire classic car scene.

Never before has such a late-model Ferrari earned such totals - which are typically the preserve of the 250 series from pre-1964.

What makes this gorgeous Ferrari so much more valuable than the thousands of other classic Ferrari’s seeking new homes? How did the price of this single model nearly double the $14 million dollar average price - excluding this giant total - when any of these 10 cherished models have changed hands in the past?

Part of what makes this NART Spider so valuable is the car’s unique blend of the gorgeous late-1950s Ferrari styling and advanced mechancials. The GTB/4S upgrades dramatically increased the performance and handling of this V-12 supercar. Almost the entire Maranello racing technology suite was applied to the NART Spider - allowing it to be a posh cruiser that was also capable of serious speed on a racetrack.

The V-12’s quad overhead camshafts were a first on a road car, while the rear-mounted transaxle, limited-slip diff and independent rear suspension were all huge advancements that were offered first in the NART Spider.

Ferrari never looked back from all the new technology introduced on the NART Spider. At the same time, the NART is especially sentimental because Ferrari would not make make such an emotionally-styled road car again for decades. The 365 GTB/4 Daytona was 1967’s new hot style and Ferrari followed the money trail by ending 275 production.

Little did they know, the layers of exclusivity and special editions that helped create this this NART Spider would make it the most valuable road car ever sold. Ever.

To go along with the 2013 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance were a few auctions that typically have 10 to 12 million-dollar cars on hand each and every year. This year was no exception, as RM Auction’s Monterey auction had a total of 15 million dollar hammer values, but that’s not the most imressive number of the weekend.

The most impressive of the million-dollar club this year was the price tag that the 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 *S N.A.R.T Spider. This 1-of-10 model went for an astounding $27.5 million once the hammer fell on it, making it the second-most valuable car ever sold at auction and the most valuable Ferrari ever sold at auction by a long shot.

Reports point toward the car heading to the waiting arms of Canadian fashion businessman Lawrence Stroll, but those reports are not confirmed. Either way, whoever landed this Ferrari certainly has one of the most rarest cars on the planet and a much lighter wallet. Plus he gets to tinker around in a classic supercar with an incredible-for-the-era 3,286 cc quad-overhead-cam V-12 powerplant that blasts out 300 horsepower.

Alongside this outrageous auction price, there was also a 1928 Mercedes-Benz 680S Torpedo Roadster that went for $8.25 million; a 1954 Ferrari 500 Mondial Spider Series I that went for $3.52 million; and a 1974 McLaren M16C Indianapolis that went for the same $3.52 million.

So, the brief but exciting 2013 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is in the books and we can officially announce the winner of its most coveted award: "Best of Show." This award is just what it sounds like; out of all of the possible classes in the entire Concours, this model was the most amazing of them all. Sure, winning any of the various class awards is great, but a "Best of Show" award is one that an owner can brag about for an entire lifetime.

This year’s winner is a 1934 Packard 1108 Twelve Dietrich Convertible Victoria, and we swear that it did not win on name length alone — though that may have been a part of the judging process... This monster of a drop top, which is better known as simply the Packard Twelve, comes courtesy of Joseph and Margie Cassini III from West Orange, New Jersey.

This classic Packard took home the prize, despite plenty of top-line competition from the other nominees, which included a 1932 Lincoln KB Murphy Roadster; a 1934 Hispano-Suiza J12 Vanvooren Coupé; and a 1914 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Van den Plas Belgium Torpedo

Mecum Auctions - Monterey 2013 Preview

An event like the Pebble Beach Concours in Monterey, California will always draw a crowd. But unlike most auto shows, the type of crowd that goes to these events are the ones that are ready to plop down the checkbook once they see something they want.

With multitude of auctions on tap, one in particular that’s worth mentioning is the Mecum Auctions. Scheduled to take place from August 15 to 17, beginning at 10 a.m. everyday, the Mecum Auctions will feature some of the finest classics you’ll ever get to see in one setting, a fitting tribute to the esteem of the auction as a can’t-miss event during the week-long festivities.

This year, the Mecum Auctions will have its share of classics with estimated auction prices in the millions for some, if not most, of the models.

That’s the prestige attached to the Mecum Auctions and one that’s rightfully earned.

RM Auctions - Monterey 2013 Preview

Auction season is now in full swing and if your bank accounts haven’t taken too much of a hit yet, you might need to brace yourselves for the financial beating you might take when RM Auctions holds its annual event at Monterey this weekend.

Scheduled to take place on Friday, August 16, and Saturday, August 17, RM Auctions will feature a whole lot of classics and exotics that will undoubtedly catch the attention of attending car collectors at the Pebble Beach Concours d’ Elegance in Pebble Beach, California.

That’s the allure of all the events that make up this week-long classic-car festival. No matter what kind of name it has, the third week of August has turned into a calendar fixture for auto enthusiasts of all generations.

RM Auctions will be there and you’ll get to see a what’s what list of classic vehicles, some even dating back to the early part of the previous century. So fill up those checkbooks, folks. There’s a good chance that you’re going to be writing a whole lot of checks this weekend if you fancy any of the classics that will be auctioned off by RM Auctions.

In the latest episode of his show, Jay Leno got the chance to review a 1964 Jaguar E-Type , not a stock one, but still a pretty enjoyable drive, at least according to Jay Leno. The model was brought back to life by Jason Len from XKs Unlimited, who wanted to bring the flavor of the track to this E-Type, while keeping it totally streetable.

This Jag was updated with a roomier interior, a new alloy hood, factory-built Le Mans racing lights, a custom front bumper to accommodate the racing lights, knock-off wheels, Le Mans winglets and a new exhaust system with side pipes. The model is powered by a 3.8-liter inline-six engine that delivers a total of 300 horsepower — a 70 horsepower increase over the stock E-Type.

Porsche continues to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the legendary 911 in some of the coolest ways imaginable.

It’s already checked the special-edition 911 Carrera off its list. Now, it’s taking a completely different approach by hosting a record-breaking parade of Porsche 911 sports cars at the Silverstone Grand Prix over the past weekend.

All in all, 1,208 classic and modern 911s attended the event, all squeezing into what eventually became a completely packed and cramped Silverstone race track. It’s hard enough to see hundreds of 911s in one location but to see well over 1,000 in one location was a completely surreal sight.

Porsche Club GB and Silverstone Classic took center stage in organizing the event and while it was initially pegged to attract hundreds of 911s to the event, not a lot of people expected to hit 1,000, let alone exactly 1,208 Porsche 911s that all trooped over to Silverstone to attend the record-breaking gathering.

If you’re a Porsche aficionado, this is like heaven on wheels. There are classic Carreras, 911 RSs, RSRs, 911 GTs, Speedsters, Targas, and 911 Turbos.

Needless to say, the expectations for the gathering were far exceeded, something Mark Porsche, the son of Porsche 911 designed founder Ferdinand Alexander ‘Butzi’ Porsche, said meant a lot to his family.

“Of course, the 911 means a great deal to me as it’s my father’s big design and it will always have a special place in my heart,” he said.

“It’s been a family member over all the generations of the 911 series and I’m very proud to be here today to represent the Porsche family at this great event. I think that to have these 1,200 cars on track is the attention that the 911 deserves for its 50th birthday. I can’t thank the Porsche Club GB enough for making this event possible.”

Chris Harris has long entertained us by reviewing some of the greatest cars out there, and the latest episode of Drive is no exception. This time around, Chris stepped outside of his comfort zone of modern-day sports cars and supercars to get behind the wheel of a classic Jaguar C-Type . To take him further out of his zone, Chris is driving the classic Jag in the famous Mille Miglia event, which forces him to drive slow and calculated speeds, as opposed to full-tilt, as he is used to.

The C-Type (with "C" coming from competition) was a racing sports car built by Jaguar and sold from 1951 to 1953. There were only 55 units built and all of them raced in competitions like the Le Mans 24 hours race, which it won twice. The C-Type was driven by legendary men like the Stirling Moss and Jack Fairman, Leslie Johnson and three-time Mille Miglia winner, Clemente Biondetti.

The C-Type is powered by a DOHC in-line six-cylinder engine with two SU carburetors. This powerplant delivered a total of 210 horsepower in its heyday.

At recent auctions, the model was auctioned for an amazing price of $3.7 million.

Classic Recreations developed a one-of-a-kind Shelby G.T.350CR that will be auctioned at Mecum Auctions on August 16, 2013. The new G.T.350CR will feature classic Shelby elements, such as functional brake scoops, riveted quarter window covers, side exhaust and iconic LeMans stripes.

The model is based on an original 1966 Mustang fastback combined with a complete ground-up rebuild. The base V-8 engine was replaced with a new 7.0-liter V-8 engine from Ford Racing that delivers a total of 545 horsepower. The engine mates to a Tremec five-speed manual transmission.

Along with the new engine, Classic Recreations also installed new Carroll Shelby signature rally series 1000 seats, climate control, a top-shelf sound system, a dual-tank nitrous injection system, bespoke forged three-piece HRE Performance wheels, Wilwood brakes and custom paint.

A coil-over suspension and power rack-and-pinion steering handle all the corners that this hopped-up pony car encounters. The GT350CR also includes a four-wheel disc brake system with 13-inch discs up front and 12-inch discs out back combined with four-piston calipers.

After the first prototype crosses the auction block, Classic Recreations will put the G.T.350CR into production. The custom builder will produce only 10 units per year and prices start at $119,000.

From one iconic car model to another, Mini took the rather unexpected but ultimately gracious step in wishing Porsche’s legendary 911 a happy 50th birthday.

Maybe it’s not that surprising, considering that it’s coming from Mini, a company that has made an art out of steering away from the skid. But Mini Mini isn’t just sending birthday wishes to Porsche. No, that would’ve been too easy and not up to the standards of the Mini Way.

What it did was take the time to participate in a dedicated photos shoot that brought together a classic Mini and a first-generation Porsche 911 Targa; two cars that not only defined their respective car markets, but also came to the photo shoot dressed in equal doses of lime yellow.

The move is admirable considering that both companies are owned by different German auto conglomerates (BMW for Mini and Volkswagen for Porsche). It’s also a shrewd move by the British brand that somehow always gets to promote itself when it’s not trying to.
