A concept car is a car prototype made to showcase a new vehicle's styling, technology, and overall design before production. They are often shown at motor shows to gauge customer reaction to new and radical designs which may or may not have a chance of being produced.

Yesterday we announced the Mazda CX-5 Active Driver for the upcoming 2013 Tokyo Auto Salon. Today it’s time to announce another specially prepared CX-5 set to be unveiled in January 2013 in Japan. This time we are talking about the CX-5 Grand Touring — a concept featuring an aerodynamic body kit, a set of high-performance Brembo brakes and a set of 20-inch alloy wheels.

The concept combines a "Soul Red Premium Metallic" exterior paint with numerous piano-black elements, including the exterior mirrors, front and rear spoiler, side skirts, and doors handles. The same black and red combination has been used on the interior where black leather has been combined with red stitching.

No other details have been provided just yet, but we do know the model will feature Mazda’s "SKYACTIV-D" technology. Full details will be unveiled during the car’s official debut at the 2013 Tokyo Auto Salon.

Alongside the BRZ Premium Sport Package concept, Subaru will also unveil the Forester Sport Concept at the 2013 Tokyo Auto Salon. This vehicle has been specially designed for highway driving and city cruising, and has been customized as an "On-road super SUV".

The new Forester Sport Concept is powered by a Direct Injection Turbo (DIT) engine specially developed for tackling pavement. Along with the special engine, this concept comes with distinctive styling. Its aero package includes a specially designed front grille, a new STI front under spoiler, an STI sport muffler, a side under spoiler, an STI flexible tower bar and an STI rear under spoiler.

In order to improve the SUV’s handing capabilities, Subaru installed a new Bilstein suspension and a set of BBS-designed 20-inch aluminum wheels. A set of Brembo brakes and drilled rotors help drag this SUV to a stop. For the interior, the only updates announced for now include new front and rear red-colored leather seats.

Full details will be announced during the car’s official debut at the 2013 Tokyo Auto Salon.

While most of our attention is focused on the upcoming 2013 Detroit Auto Show, people in Japan are preparing themselves for the 2013 Tokyo Auto Salon — not as popular as Detroit, but still a pretty good chance to see some cool upgrade packages offered for current models.

Mazda , for example, announced an impressive lineup as six vehicles to be displayed in Tokyo, one of the most impressive one being the Atenza Racer (known as the Mazda6 in the U.S. market). According to the first details we have on this cool model, the new Atenza Racer has been designed as a "response to a request of the user who is running the circuit, and comfort."

The model features M’z CUSTOM (M’s custom) aero parts, Brembo brake calipers and engine upgrades. On the inside, Mazda installed sporty leather seats and a set of alloy pedals. No details on the final specifications have been provided just yet, but we expect to learn them pretty soon.

Subaru BRZ Concept STI

It looks like today has been a day for Tokyo Auto Salon previews. First Honda , then Mazda and now Subaru has offered us the first details on its models to be displayed in Tokyo, starting January 11, 2013. Subaru will come to the show with several new concepts, the coolest one being based on the new BRZ sports car.

The new BRZ Premium Sport Package concept will offer customers a pretty good idea of what the STI version will bring to the market, including an STI aero kit, a carbon fiber roof and a set of 19-inch BBS prototype alloy wheels. The interior has also been customized with leather seats and bright metallic trim.

We have no images of the concept just yet, but we do know it will be featuring lots of black exterior elements and special metallic colors of high brightness.

Full details on the Subaru BRZ Premium Sport Package concept will be unveiled during its official debut at the 2013 Tokyo Auto Salon.

One of the models to be displayed by Mazda at the upcoming 2013 Tokyo Auto Salon is based on the CX-5 SUV. This concept is called Active Driver and has been specially designed for those active families that need plenty of luggage space, but also the strong torque delivered by the CX-5’s "SKYACTIV-D" technology.

The new CX-5 Active Driver is painted in white with carbon fiber inserts on the hood and numerous gloss-black accents. The car is also offered with a set of unique alloy wheels. For the interior, Mazda has added new sports seats, a new steering wheel wrapped in Alcantara and alloy pedals to go along with color combo of black and red.

We cannot tell for sure what engine is under the hood, but we do know that it will feature SKYACTIV-D technology, like 14-to-1 compression, two-stage turbocharger and weight reduction. Will learn full details in January 2013 when the model makes its world debut.

Honda announced the first details on its display lineup for the upcoming 2013 Tokyo Auto Salon and it looks quite promising. The coolest model announced for Tokyo is the S2000 Modulo Climax — an S2000-based concept model that features cutting-edge aeroform design and a chic interior coordinated in black and burgundy.

No other details have been provided, but it looks like the concept’s outward appearance is quite similar to the production version S2000, sans some minor updates. The interior, on the other hand, looks fully updated, with lots of leather used on the seats, dashboard and steering wheel. For the interior, Honda opted for a black and burgundy red combination, matching the red used on the exterior.

We expect the S2000 Modulo Climax to be a hybrid vehicle, but we will have full details on it in January 2013 when the model will make its official debut in Tokyo.

After being teased for a couple of weeks, the new Toyota Corolla Furia Concept made its world debut at the Detroit Auto Show. As you probably have guessed from its name, the new Furia concept previews the design language set to be used in the next-generation Corolla .

The concept has been designed around a new "Iconic Dynamism" theme that combine pure and simple surface in an attempt to create a "confident, decisive and recognizable appearance appealing to more youthful consumers."

Up front Furia received a blacked-out grille and new sculpted front LED headlamps. The elegant lines continue with a sloped roofline and pronounced fender flares and rear composite LED taillight. Numerous carbon fiber accents have been used on the wheel wells, rocker panels, and rear valance. The concept sits on a new set of 19" alloy wheels.

Of course not all these elements will be featured in the next Corolla, but we expect to see at least the front grille, the headlamps and the taillamps.

Ford F-150

Now that Chevrolet has officially announced the 2014 Silverado , it is time for its biggest competitor - Ford F-150 to make the next move. New details suggest that Ford will in fact be offering a first concept version of the 2015 F-150 next month at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show.

The current generation F-150 is on sale ever since 2009 and received an updated version with new engines and a new look in 2011. However, do not expect the production version of the F-150 to arrive shortly after the concept - rumors suggest in fact that customers interested in the new generation pick-up will have to wait until late fall of 2014. That will offer the Ford model quite a disadvantage in front of its Silverado competitor set to go on sale in the second quarter of 2013.

The 2015 F-150 will be about 700 lbs lighter than the current generation and Ford has promised a fuel economy improved by 15 to 20%. The model will be offered with a new generation of V-6 engines, internally known as the "Nano" family, in the 2.7 to 2.9-liter displacement range.

Full details will be unveiled at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, stay tuned!

The concept measures 3.6 meters (141.7 inches) in length and 2.2 meters (86.6 inches) height and offers enough interior room for the driver, three passengers and a stroller or shopping cart. The concept is being equipped with a coffee maker, a refrigerator and unlimited connectivity that offers the passengers the best driving performances.

The concept is also being equipped with unique space-saving upright seats equipped with safety belts that offer the passenger the best safety. The concept has been designed as all-electric vehicle, but Rinspeed did not provide any details on the car’s powertrain.

More details will be offered during the car’s official debut at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. Stay tuned!

We already know that beginning with the next-generation 3-Series , the coupe and the convertible versions will no longer be offered as a 3-Series model. Instead, BMW will add a new model to its lineup known as the 4-Series .

We are all eagerly anticipating a production version of the 4-Series to show up soon, but BMW will start off with a little teasing, as it will first release a concept model. The 4-Series concept will make its world debut at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show and BMW has just released the first official details of the upcoming concept.

The new 4-Series will take its design inspiration from the 6-Series Coupe and it will offer "greater sportiness, greater exclusivity and even clearer differentiation" from the 3-Series. It will also be longer and feature a lowered roof line.

BMW offered no details on the engine lineup just yet, but the production version will be offered with the same engine lineup as the 3-Series sedan.

Update 12/7/2012: BMW has just launched a video outlining the all-new BMW 4-Series Concept with higher ups at Bimmer talking about the improvements of the new Coupe.

UPDATE 02/18/13: Leave it to BMW to leave us dumbfounded about a new promo video for the new BMW 4-Series Coupe. It’s in German, which we don’t really understand, but a quick browse through Google Translate seems to suggest that the promo video is saying the that the 4-Series Coupe is "the Ultimate Driving Machine". And who are we to disagree. Check out the video by clicking on the photo above.
