  A concept car is a car prototype made to showcase a new vehicle's styling, technology, and overall design before production. They are often shown at motor shows to gauge customer reaction to new and radical designs which may or may not have a chance of being produced.


Cadillac made its presence felt at the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in a different fashion from the rest of its colleagues, and certainly different from their approach last year when they unveiled the Ciel Concept . Instead of dropping a world debut or even a US debut, the American automaker decided to show off their newest concept car...in a teaser.

Yep. Cadillac didn’t show a new concept and it certainly didn’t show a new production model. But they did draw up serious interest from a lot of people with what appears to be a new concept car that’s scheduled to make its debut at a future North American auto show in the coming year.

No details have been revealed, except for some comments made by Clay Dean, Cadillac’s director of advanced design, to Autoweek saying that the new concept will be the inspiration - or at least the peg - for the company’s new design language that touches on "American glamor meets American technology.”

If an award for vague teasers was given at Pebble Beach, Cadillac would’ve won it by a landslide. There’s not a lot to go by except for a multitude of speculatory guesses that touch on the long bonnet, wide wheel arches, and a unique tail lamp set-up.

British luxury car maker, Bentley , knows how to make waves in the auto industry. Three years ago at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance , they unveiled their new flagship sedan, the Mulsanne .

On the same event three years later, Bentley followed it up with the Mulsanne Vision Concept, a convertible version of the Mulsanne and the likely successor of the Azure as their top-dollar convertible model.

While the company didn’t release official photos of the Mulsanne Vision Concept, they did drop a number of sketch photos of the convertible concept, all while touting it as the potential future of the marque’s flagship family.

"The modern, luxurious, high-tech Mulsanne saloon provides a perfect foundation on which to create the world’s most elegant convertible," said Wolfgang Dürheimer, Bentley’s Chairman and Chief Executive. "The Convertible Concept will extend the appeal of the Mulsanne family, while enhancing the profile of the Bentley brand, particularly in new and emerging markets."

The Mulsanne Vision Concept exudes the elegant and graceful form of a coach-built marque car, complete with sculpted lines and muscular haunches that convey a sense of power and movement to the luxury car. The interior of the concept was also described as having a spacious yet intimate cabin design that’s inspired by luxurious, high-performance power boats.

Noted for its unrivaled combination of chic, contemporary design, and the painstaking attention to detail and luxury refinement that Bentley is known for, the Mulsanne Convertible Concept is yet another proof that when it comes to high-end luxury, only a few can lay claim to Bentley’s position as one of the best in the business.


In our weekly scrounge to try and dig up an interesting photo for you folks, we came across something rather interesting that we had forgotten all about. In 1995, GM decided it was time to overhaul the Cavalier and axe the Sunbird altogether. With the exit of the Sunbird came the introduction of the “sportier” Pontiac Sunfire – ah, GM’s creative naming department struck gold there. What we tend to forget is that the Sunfire project started in the early-1990s and was far different than the end result.

To think that the crappy Sunfire was actually a hot concept car with true sports car appearance and likely matching performance numbers seems preposterous, but it’s true. From this photo, you can see just what GM was working on and, on the outside, it was a stunner. Now, inside was a different story. You can see the huge, clunky 1990s GM buttons on the center of the steering wheel and a plethora of these eyesores on the center console too.

One of the advertising gimmicks on this flier, which was distributed at car shows, was the remote-control CD player. This was for those people that just did not have the energy to move their arm the foot or so, needed to touch the CD player’s buttons. What innovative thinkers GM was in the 1990s, right?

McLaren Special Operations (MSO) was introduced to the public last year, as the customization arm for the famed supercar builder. Think of it like Mercedes’ AMG without the performance parts. We haven’t heard too much from this arm in the last year, but that is because they have obviously been extremely busy.

“Busy doing what,” you may ask. Well, they were busy taking an MP4-12C and turning it into a one-off machine like no other to ever roam the streets. This new monster is the brain child of one lucky McLaren client and McLaren designer, Hong Yeo.

The client actually came to McLaren three years ago looking for a car that was more unique than the McLaren F1 and Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren that he had already owned. The X1, which MLaren has just unveiled at "The Quail: A Motorsport Gathering," is based on the MP4-12C and was imagined as a timeless car with inspiration from multiple items, including: 1961 Facel Vega , a 1953 Chrysler D’Elegance Ghia, a 1959 Buick Electra, a 1939 Mercedes-Benz 540K , a 1971 Citroën SM , the Guggenheim museums in New York and Bilbao, a Jaeger LeCoultre art deco clock, an Airstream trailer, a Thomas Mann Montblanc pen, a grand piano, and an eggplant

That’s a huge list of inspirations, but when you look at the X-1, you can actually visualize where each piece may have gained its inspiration. Well, except for whichever piece was inspired by the Jaeger LeCoultre art deco clock and the Thomas Mann Montblanc pen, as we have no clue which clock or pen inspired it.

It is not a new concept that Caterham remains one of the most popular boutique sports cars in all of Europe, despite the fact that it only builds about 500 models each year. It is also not a shocker to know that England’s former boutique powerhouse, Lotus , has taken a huge hit in recent years, but still has an international presence.

Caterham’s flagship car, the Seven , is built with extreme care to keep the power-to-wight ratio as high as possible. This has worked so far, but Caterham needs to expand into other places, like the U.S., which only sees about 50 Caterham Sevens per year. Caterham is careful, though, and that’s what has made it the success it is today, so expansion needs to be carefully plotted out.

One thing that could help Caterham expand is to join forces with a like-minded car company to produce high-quality, lightweight sports cars that the American market would enjoy. One possibility is Lotus, which is sinking fast, but already offers up its lightweight bodies and chassis to other companies, like Hennessey , to build into lightweight monsters, so why not Caterham?

Combining the two could result in sweet profits for both, as Lotus could provide its lightweight chassis technology and its recognized name, and Caterham could provide its high-revving performance engine technology. With the Lotus name and body, and Caterham technology heading to the U.S., Caterham gains a stronger foothold in the U.S. and Lotus gets a chance to regain its presence in the states, all while sharing the cost and profits.

What’s even more telling is the fact that both Caterham and Lotus have been linked to the Renault Alpine and they have teamed up in the past. So there is the possibility that there are already talks between the two companies. This could also spill over into the anticipated manufacture of the Nissan-built Infiniti Emerg-E .

For now, this is all just a bit of speculation, but the writing is on the wall and the benefits are certainly there for all parties.

Ever since Fiat brought back the 500 some years back, there seems to have been a renewed approach in bringing their iconic model to a new generation of consumers. In keeping with what’s become a trend in the industry these days - hey there, MINI! - Fiat has gone the route of introducing an extraordinary amount of different models under the 500 line.

The first one that was released was the 500L , a five-passenger model that expands the brand’s style and efficiency in the growing B-segment. From there, Fiat unveiled the 500X , a crossover that’s being touted as a direct rival to the MINI Countryman.

Not content with their expanded line-up, Fiat decided to take it to a whole new level with a minivan that’s being touted as the Fiat 500 XL. We’re tempted to assume that ’XL’ means "extra large," which wouldn’t be too far off considering that the ’L’ in 500L stands for "large."

Recent patent drawings compiled by Carscoop have provided us with the first look of what could very well be the seven-seater 500XL. In order to accommodate the third row of seats, the 500XL is rumored to measure a full six inches longer in the rear overhang than the 500L model, which already had a length of 13.6."

Fiat hasn’t made any formal announcements on the future of the 500XL, although a fair estimate points to the Paris Motor Show as the venue of the 500XL’s debut.

Get your seat belts ready and fasten up, McLaren fans!

The British automaker has released a one-off, race concept that will blow your socks off. The car is called the 12C Can-Am Edition and is based on the MP4-12C GT3 race car . The only difference is that the 12C Can-Am Edition is far and away more powerful than its GT3 cousin.

Set to debut at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance organized in California, the 12C Can-Am Edition is what happens when you have an automaker as devoted to the meticulous and obsessive pursuit of performance like McLaren put their thinking hats and build a car that’s just way too cool for words.

It’s been dressed in the company’s now iconic McLaren Orange paint scheme, further adding a touch of Woking to its overall appeal. Add that to a boat load of aerodynamic modifications combined with enhanced performance capabilities and it’s easy to surmise exactly why McLaren is taking pride in this one-off race concept.

When the Emerg-E popped onto the scene during the Geneva Auto Show, us automotive folk were amazed at the technology and potential behind this car. We were also amazed to see a rather familiar platform looking back at us, as the Emerg-E is built on the same platform as the Lotus Evora .

Lotus is no stranger to lending out its platforms and bodies for various performance applications (see: Hennessey Venom GT ), but it has never gotten into the actual building phase of these cars. Infiniti has yet to confirm that the Emerg-E for production, but its sister company, Renault, has already announced that the Alpine will go into production, in one form or another.

Since Renault has also made it clear that the Alpine will not be much like its concept and the Emerg-E is already based on a Lotus concept, why not save a little scratch and build both models on the same platform? There is really no reason not to and there is absolutely no way that Lotus would refuse this deal, as it sorely needs a little extra money these days.

Sure, the production level may be low and the income may be limited, but it would at least help put Lotus back into the sports car conversation. In addition to getting its foot back into the sports car door, with the Evora and Emerg-E being range-extended electric vehicles, this could carve Lotus a real nice and potentially profitable niche.

We’ll have to wait and see what comes of this, but the connection is already there, it just needs a little push in the right direction.

We pretty much just finished the Museum Secrets Part One video and Porsche has already graced us with part two of this awesome series. The Museum Secrets series is outlining the new storage facility for the Porsche Museum and also showing us a glimpse of some of the most awesome cars that pass through the museum.

Part One focused mainly on the storage facility and Porsche’s overall history, then showed us just one car, which was the first ever 911 Turbo. Part two, thankfully, focuses a lot more on the storage facilities contents – a ton of rare Porsches. The guys at Porsche outlined seven cars for us, some of which we never knew even existed.

BMW is buying itself a little more time to organize intel about the next generation BMW M3 sports sedan by presenting a concept version of the sports sedan at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show before unleashing the production model later in 2013 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Apparently, all of the intense testing the M3 has undergone is still not enough to satiate BMW’s need for releasing a model that will meet or exceed the expectations of the market. Either that, or BMW is just trying to build up an exceptional amount of momentum before letting us have it.

The concept version of the BMW M3 should still offer a close look at the future M3’s general appearance and mechanical package which has been in the speculation ring for months. The next M3 is said to feature the same design language as the larger M5, including a front bumper with large cooling ducts, a lightly altered kidney grille, wider front fenders with the signature air vents, a subtle trunk-lip spoiler, and a special M exhaust system.

The area in which the most rumors have circulated is the engine. Rumors have been going around stating that the next M3 will feature a turbocharged 3.3-liter V6 engine with an output of about 450 HP, making it more powerful and more fuel efficient than the current M3. Whether this is with the help of a bi-turbo or a tri-turbo is still unconfirmed.

The future BMW M3 will be offered exclusively as a sedan and will show up on US dealerships in the winter of 2014.
