  A concept car is a car prototype made to showcase a new vehicle's styling, technology, and overall design before production. They are often shown at motor shows to gauge customer reaction to new and radical designs which may or may not have a chance of being produced.

Katzkin - the global leader in vehicle interior transformation - will be celebrating its 30th anniversary by unveiling a series of 100 vehicles with updated interiors. One of them will be based on the 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo which will include both exterior and interior updates.

The new Veloster "KX 1 Concept" will feature two Katzkin leather front seats, and an updated dashboard and center console. The interior also looks highly modified with a very cool paint scheme that coincides with the grey exterior paint finish and orange racing stripes.

Katzkin will also be unveiling the company’s latest VIS 2.0 (Vehicle Interior Selector) configurator that allows customers to design the interior of their vehicles in whichever way they desire. This new program will allow customers to better select premium, custom, and limited edition interior designs. The VIS 2.0 system will be integrated into the dashboard for guests to experience the new and easier navigational “How to Buy” features.

After releasing a teaser image of a sports car concept that featured subtle hints of the 370Z and the GT-R , Nissan has finally announced the Extrem Concept at the Sao Paulo Motor Show in Brazil. Given the rapid development of the Brazilian economy and to underscore Nissan’s commitment to Brazil, the all-Brazilian Extrem Concept was seen fit to be unveiled there.

The Extrem Concept is roughly based on the Micra hatch and is designed to look like a cross between an SUV and a coupe, or in other words, a crossover. This particular segment has witnessed rapid growth with the likes of the Range Rover Evoque fueling that growth. Designed by Nissan’s design studio in San Diego, the inspiration for this design comes from Brazil itself where the designers spent most of their time designing and developing the clay models. The usual concept elements include the wraparound glass, floating roof rails, and detached C pillars that enhance the feeling of an open, airy cabin. It would be great if these elements made it to the production version too. Though the pictures suggest less cabin space for storage, Nissan claims that there is a dedicated luggage space in the rear. A clever two-tier system provides secure storage, where items can be hidden from prying eyes beneath an exposed and removable cargo bin which is accessed via the rear hatch. The bin is designed for day-to-day items and fits neatly underneath a structural cross brace that adds extra stiffness to the shell and accentuates the sporting nature of the car.

It sort of looks like a high riding 2+2 version of the GT-R, but don’t expect it to be powerful like the GT-R, though we have seen one example of that! Nissan could theoretically fit the 1.6-liter turbocharged direct-injection inline-four that also powers the unusual DeltaWing racecar , driving either the front wheels or all four through a Continuously Variable Transmission, a favorite addition of Nissan.

The production version of this concept will be sold only in the South American market. For now, people outside South America can only expect future crossover models to extract design cues from this concept.

Acura NSX Concept

We saw the Acura NSX Concept at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show and we were all pretty much amazed by it. Unfortunately, at that time, Honda had no concrete idea of when the NSX would see production, and left us hanging by telling us that it would be in showrooms within three years. Since then, we have speculated about just as far as we can.

Well, according to Auto Express, that speculation may be over sooner than we expected, as it is reporting that a Honda rep said that the production NSX would debut at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show. Oddly enough, this is the same exact show that the 2014 Corvette will debut at. Looks as if we are in for a new-sports-car showdown to launch 2013.

The exact details of the NSX are really unknown, but according to Auto Express’s report, the production NSX will be “identical” to the concept model we saw this past January. Additionally, the Acura NSX will wear a “Honda ” badge in the UK, as is standard for many UK-sold Acuras. In the U.S., however, we expect it to retain the Acura name.

We’ll keep an eye out for more information on the upcoming NSX and we’ll watch out for any confirmation from Honda regarding this rumored unveiling.

It’s only been a few days since rumors about a new Volkswagen baby-SUV began and now, at the 2012 São Paulo International Motor Show, the company has unveiled the new Taigun concept - a preview version of a new New Small Family by Volkswagen.

The Taigun is painted in a breezy "Seaside Blue" exterior paint finish and was designed using the latest Volkswagen design DNA. It measures 3,859 mm long, 1,728 mm wide, and 1,570 mm tall, but despite these compact dimensions, it still offers interior space for up to four passengers and a boot-space of 280 liters. This boot space can be increased to 987 liters when the rear bench seat is folded down. Its looks come from its bigger brother in the lineup - the Tiguan - and includes the same double-split front grill, sharp headlamps, and an overall look that is less rounded and more aggressive, much like the rest of the Volkswagen lineup. The look is perfected with a set of 17-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 205/50 R17 tires.

The Taigun is powered by a 1.0-liter TSI engine that delivers a total of 110 HP and 129 lb-ft of torque. With a total weight of 2171 lbs, the concept will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 9.2 seconds and up to a top speed of 115 mph, all while delivering a fuel economy of 52 mpg.

Audi has been developing the R8 E-tron in order to revolutionize the electric sports car market and now they are moving on the next phase of development by teaming up with Bosch and several institutes at the RWTH Aachen University. Together, they have developed a technology platform that is a major advance for electric mobility.

The first prototype developed on this platform is the F12 e performance - a car that looks exactly like an R8 on the outside, but is purely powered by electricity. The research car is powered by three electric motors that can be controlled separately: one located at the front axle for slow driving and two at the rear axle for higher speeds. The three electric motors develop a total of 204 HP and 405 lb-ft. of torque.

The electric motors take their power from a switchable high-voltage electrical system made from two batteries, one with 144 volts and the other with 216 volts. The voltage is provided by a DC/DC converter: 200 volts for part load and 440 volts for increased power demand.

The prototype offers four basic drive functions – Park, Reverse, Neutral and Drive - all of which can be controlled via a tablet computer that can be removed from the center console.

Audi is focused on revolutionizing the electric segment and we wouldn’t doubt if their hard work eventually pays off with a solid R8 featuring the best of electric mobility technology. As of right now, the F12 is just a research vehicle, but Audi’s electric future is a definite highlight in the industry.

Hyundai i30 (Elantra Touring)

Not only have Hyundai and Kia been busy making their lineups more complete, reliable, and desirable, but they have also been working on introducing higher-performance models, like the Genesis Coupe and Genesis R-Spec . One model that some of us have been wondering if Hyundai would ever give the high-performance treatment to is the Elantra GT , which is known as the i30 in other markets.

Well, the Elantra GT may not be getting the high-performance nod, but it looks as if it is in the cards for its i30 brother, as reports are emerging that Hyundai will release a high-performance i30 dubbed the RS i30 at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. We anticipate this new model to feature the same 200-horsepower, 1.6-liter engine found in the Veloster Turbo and compete with the likes of the Volkswagen GTI and Renault Megane RS .

From the reports, we expect to see a slightly lower body, more aggressive styling, sport seats with contrasting stitching, and sporty accents throughout the interior. We will also likely see improvements to the braking system, like larger diameter rotors, to help bring this more powerful 5-door hatch to a stop.

Given the slow-for-a-performance-hatchback 6.9-second sprint to 60 mph that the Veloster Turbo gives us, don’t expect the significantly heavier i30 to be anything more than a 7.3- to 7.5-second car to 60 mph. The only way the RS i30 will impress us is if Hyundai completely revises the 1.6-liter engine to pump out more ponies and dip its 0-to-60 number to under 7 seconds, but we don’t see that happening.

There is no information on whether the i30 will actually make it to production nor if its drivetrain will make it into the Elantra GT. We’ll keep an eye out for more leaks to come down the wire.

The Germans from Innovative Mobility Automobile GmbH have developed a new small electric vehicle in cooperation with five other partners.

The new vehicle was named the Colibri and features a plastic body built on a strong magnesium frame. The development of the new Colibri began from a research made on today’s mobility behavior. According to this research, the majority of people use individual means of transportation in their everyday lives and most of the time each vehicle is driven by only one person. Moreover, a person makes daily travels of less than 55 km (34 miles).

Starting from these facts, Innovative Mobility Auto developed an ultra efficient vehicle that offers a range of more than 100 km and is able to transport only one person. Under the plastic body, the Mobility Colibri is equipped with a 12 kW electric motor, powered by a lightweight pack of lithium iron phosphate batteries that weighs only 50 pounds. The vehicle is expected to be available on the market in 2014.

If the Z-Spec 2.5 Concept is a little too much, then you’ll be happy to know that Chevrolet has another Sonic -based concept prepared for the 2012 SEMA Auto Show: the Sonic Z-Spec 1 Concept. This latest concept combines the Z-Spec’s exterior look with a more capable driving experience.

The Z-Spec 1 Concept is painted in a custom Synergy Green color combined with an Ashen Grey Sonic RS rear spoiler and Z-Spec stripe, as well as logos and Piano Black mesh-style upper and lower grilles with Ashen Grey surrounds. The final piece of the exterior is a new set of 18" wheels in a split-spoke design with Synergy Green inserts.

To improve the driving experience, Chevrolet has lowered the ride height with a Chevrolet Performance concept suspension kit, including lowering sprints, performance dampers, and a new concept brake kit featuring four-piston front disc brake calipers with 16-inch rotors. A new Borla exhaust system enhances the sound of the engine.

For the interior, Chevrolet combined Jet Black and Titanium with Chevrolet Accessories stainless steel pedal covers and sill plates. The concept also received some cool technologies like a MyLink color touch screen and Sub and Amp Kit, with a KICKER 200-watt DSP amp and a 200-watt powered subwoofer.

Let’s be fair, when someone buys a Chevrolet Sonic , they do it because they want a small car for their family, not because they want to update its looks at some point with some crazy tuning packages. That being said, the Sonic will still be well-represented at the 2012 SEMA Auto Show, allowing Chevrolet to prove to all of us that even a small car like the Sonic has an infinite number of personalizing possibilities.

One of these possibilities is the Z-Spec 2.5 Concept, which displays a number of parts from Chevrolet Performance and GM Accessories. The concept is painted in a very cool Abalone White Tricoat exterior paint combined with Z-Spec graphics and a very cool set of 18" wheels in Galvano Silver with Signal Red edges. The same Galvano Silver paint was used for the grille surround, fog lamp bezels, and door trims. The exterior updates continue with a very cool aerodynamic package, lower fascia extensions, and a rear spoiler. The company’s attention to detail is prevalent in the tinted windows and fog lamps, which combined with the other exterior add-ons, make the little Sonic almost unrecognizable.

The concept’s interior combines a Jet Black leather trim with Orange Crust leather inserts and orange accent stitching. There is also a leather-wrapped steering wheel, stainless steel pedal covers, and a very cool MyLink color touch screen. Chevrolet also threw in a Sub and Amp Kit with a KICKER 200-watt DSP amp and a 200-watt powered subwoofer for good measure.

To make the Sonic look mean with its small stature, the company lowered its ride using aChevrolet Performance concept suspension kit with lowering sprints and performance dampers. We’re not sure if the concept is now more powerful than the standard model, but we do know it has also received a cold-air intake kit and a Borla exhaust system.

The second iteration of the Lexus LF-LC Concept , previously dubbed the LF-LC 2, has now been revealed. It’s called the LF-LC Blue Concept and if we weren’t trying to outsmart ourselves, we would’ve though it was dubbed as the Blue Concept because of something garish done to the car.

The truth is, it’s called the LF-LC Blue Concept because the car has been finished in an Opal Blue color, a color that Lexus describes as inspired by the "lustrous base color found in the naturally occurring semi-precious opal stone of outback Australia." Okay, so maybe there is something behind the color.

Nevertheless, the LF-LC Blue Concept comes dressed to the party looking a whole lot like the original LF-LC Concept we saw in early 2012 at the Detroit Auto Show. Make no mistake, though, the former has some new features that the original didn’t.
