  A concept car is a car prototype made to showcase a new vehicle's styling, technology, and overall design before production. They are often shown at motor shows to gauge customer reaction to new and radical designs which may or may not have a chance of being produced.

Acura unveiled the 2013 ILX at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show and now, for the 2012 SEMA Show, they have come up with the very cool "Street Build" project car developed in cooperation with Evasive Motorsports. The new ILX Street Project represents Acura’s return to the SEMA Show after a six-year hiatus.

The Acura ILX "Street Build" Concept is based on the 2013 ILX 6-Speed Manual equipped with the vehicle’s Premium Package. It adds a supercharger kit from CT Engineering and an ECU tune that increases the 2.4-liter inline-4’s output up to an impressive 250 HP (up from the standard 201 HP). This special project also received a SP Elite exhaust from Greddy for a throatier engine sound.

The package continues with the Acura Genuine Accessories aero kit that adds a new front spoiler, new side skirts, a rear spoiler and deck lid spoiler, and body side molding. The car sits on a new set of 19" Volk G25 wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero tires.

SUVs aren’t exactly the kind of cars that attract attention from tuners, but Mazda has shown up to the 2012 SEMA Show with a number of upgrade packages based on the CX-5 , just to highlight the amazing customization possibilities for this model. One of these packages is called the CX-5 Urban - a concept car inspired by styles found in fashion and architecture.

The Mazda CX-5 Urban features two shades of Black Mica exterior paint, with the darker shade showing off multi-dimensional shadows in a triangular-like design shape. The dark night appearance of the CX-5 Urban is highlighted by Ore thin pinstripes on the matte black wheels, in the headlamps, and in the five-point front grille. The SUV sits on a new set of 22" Ace Alloy Scorpio matte black wheels wrapped in sticky Nitto Tire NT420s 295/30R20 all-season tires. The last piece of the package is a new Racing Beat dual exhaust.

It looks like the new generation Toyota Avalon is enjoying plenty of attention from tuning firms at the 2012 SEMA Show. Next to the Avalon TRD Concept , the guys over at DUB Magazine have developed a pretty impressive package for the sedan that transforms it into the perfect urban ride.

The package starts off with a custom mesh grille and a well-integrated custom lower body kit and continues with a new set of 22" wheels with a matte black finish wrapped in ultra-low-profile Pirelli tires. It has been painted in a Brilliant Black finish with the mysterious look accentuated by tinted windows and taillights.

For the interior, the tuner applied suede accents on the console, door panels, and headliner. The seats combine black leather with plush diamond-pattern suede inserts and feature DUB logos on the seatbacks.

Since this is a DUB project, a new JBL sound system was to be expected to see and houses three massive subwoofers and an impressive array of amplifiers.

The original Mustang Cobra Jet was unveiled back in 1968 when it was powered by a 7.0-liter V8 engine with massive four-barrel carburetors and an output of 335 HP. Since then, things have evolved immensely, leaving the 2013 Cobra Jet with a 5.4 liter DOHC supercharged engine that delivers an impressive 430 HP, but that can still be much improved by today’s standards. Enter Ford Racing.

Ford Racing has prepared something amazing for the 2012 SEMA Auto Show: a Cobra Jet Twin-Turbo Concept that features a pair of twin turbochargers attached to the 5.0-liter V8 engine, eliminating the supercharger which provides instant on-demand power, but loses it at high boost levels. This turbocharger system uses the same technology as Ford’s EcoBoost engines and, according to Ford Racing, has the benefit of providing much less power loss. The lag experienced by turbochargers is minimized with the use of smaller turbochargers that are just as effective, but allow for the airflow necessary to power the muscle car. The turbochargers feature turbine wheels that are made from titanium aluminide which reduces the rotational inertia by 50 percent. Along with a shaft riding on low-friction ball bearings, the compressors can spin up to 150,000 rpm almost instantly. This system also provides better responsiveness, very low inertia, and very low internal friction.

The Ford Mustang Cobra Jet Twin-Turbo Concept was prepared solely to highlight Ford’s advances in turbocharging technology, but the exterior also plays a part by showing off the new global Ford Racing livery. The exterior is painted in a crisp white finish and combined with asymmetric black and blue stripes running over the top of the car from bumper to bumper. The side of the car shows these stripes as they sweep upward before ending with the traditional striking cobra head in black with blue accents.

"Despite its smaller displacement, the improved breathing of the 5.0-liter with its twin independent variable camshaft timing and Boss 302 cylinder heads provided comparable performance while showcasing the high technology available in street Mustangs today," said Rob Deneweth, Cobra Jet Powertrain Development Engineer.

“Ford has embraced turbocharging technology and a lot of our production engineers are working with the technology on a daily basis, so we have a lot of knowledge,” added Deneweth. “So we decided to apply that knowledge to the Mustang Cobra Jet to showcase what our engineers and suppliers know how to do.”

GM and Hot Wheels go together a little bit like succotash and steak, so it is no surprise to see them joining up in several ways as we enter into SEMA. First, we caught a glimpse of the beautiful package the two put together that you can actually buy, the 2013 Camaro Hot Wheels Edition , and now we get to see a one-off collaboration between the two.

Back when Hot Wheels first came out, one of its first cars was a 1967 “Custom Camaro ” and that actually remains one of the most sought after Hot Wheels models to date. In fact, this 1:64 scale model of the Camaro goes for as much as $1,250 in its white enamel paint job. Now Chevy is prepared to pay tribute to the die-cast model by releasing a full-size variant.

GM, of course, could not make the life-sized model look identical to the die-cast Hot Wheels car, as the proportions were not accurate and the overall styling would be really silly. So we’ll chock this up as a close rendition that pays tribute to the legendary kid’s toy.

We admit to not being all that intrigued by the Fiat Bravo . Sure, it’s an affordable hatchback that looks pretty decent and has the corresponding performance qualifications to make it a nice, everyday ride, but for all the positive vibes of the Bravo, there’s very little about it that really jumps off the page. Well, except if Fiat decides to green light a production version of the just-introduced Bravo Xtreme Concept.

Looking the part of a Ford Focus ST conqueror, the Bravo Xtreme Concept is what we believe the Bravo should’ve looked like a long time ago. The aggressive body kit adds a level of attitude to the vehicle, particularly with the use of a new front bumper with its own large grille, as well as a pair of side vents, each with its own built-in LED. Over at the back, the Bravo Xtreme Concept also received some upgrades, particularly the use of a new bumper, its own LED taillights, the presence of two exhaust pipes, a pair of roof spoilers and diffuser, and a new set of two-tone alloy wheels.

Sound impressive, but the Bravo Xtreme Concept also has its fair share of interior digs, including a four individual seats, an updated dashboard, a new center console with screens integrated into the front seats’ headrests, and a new audio system from ASK.

Under its hood, the Bravo Xtreme Concept also received a rather interesting - and more powerful - engine: a 1.4-liter 16V T-Jet engine that produces an impressive 253 horsepower at 6,600 rpm and 245 lb/ft of torque at 5,000 rpm.

It’s not just not shabby in our books, it’s pretty downright impressive if you ask us.

Toyota ’s newest Avalon is an impressive vehicle, but it can get even more impressive when introduced to the fine folks at the Toyota Racing Devel Devel opment (TRD). TRD is showcasing their take on the Avalon with a concept car appearing at the 2012 SEMA Auto Show. Their Avalon Concept not only highlights the design features of the exterior, but also adds a supercharger system to bump the V6 engine’s power. To what level it is boosted to is unknown at this point, but surely it will be revealed once the car is unveiled in Las Vegas.

The new Avalon TRD features a two-tone custom paint finish, a color-keyed grille, and tinted taillights, as well as a new set of custom 19" wheels. There is also a TRD Big Brake kit and a new spring/shock package that lowers the car about one inch.

For the interior, TRD added graduated perforated leather with red piping and stitching, plus a JBL GreenEdgeTM surround sound system with 15 speakers.

Katzkin - the global leader in vehicle interior transformation - will be celebrating its 30th anniversary by unveiling a series of 100 vehicles with updated interiors. One of them will be based on the 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo which will include both exterior and interior updates.

The new Veloster "KX 1 Concept" will feature two Katzkin leather front seats, and an updated dashboard and center console. The interior also looks highly modified with a very cool paint scheme that coincides with the grey exterior paint finish and orange racing stripes.

Katzkin will also be unveiling the company’s latest VIS 2.0 (Vehicle Interior Selector) configurator that allows customers to design the interior of their vehicles in whichever way they desire. This new program will allow customers to better select premium, custom, and limited edition interior designs. The VIS 2.0 system will be integrated into the dashboard for guests to experience the new and easier navigational “How to Buy” features.

After releasing a teaser image of a sports car concept that featured subtle hints of the 370Z and the GT-R , Nissan has finally announced the Extrem Concept at the Sao Paulo Motor Show in Brazil. Given the rapid development of the Brazilian economy and to underscore Nissan’s commitment to Brazil, the all-Brazilian Extrem Concept was seen fit to be unveiled there.

The Extrem Concept is roughly based on the Micra hatch and is designed to look like a cross between an SUV and a coupe, or in other words, a crossover. This particular segment has witnessed rapid growth with the likes of the Range Rover Evoque fueling that growth. Designed by Nissan’s design studio in San Diego, the inspiration for this design comes from Brazil itself where the designers spent most of their time designing and developing the clay models. The usual concept elements include the wraparound glass, floating roof rails, and detached C pillars that enhance the feeling of an open, airy cabin. It would be great if these elements made it to the production version too. Though the pictures suggest less cabin space for storage, Nissan claims that there is a dedicated luggage space in the rear. A clever two-tier system provides secure storage, where items can be hidden from prying eyes beneath an exposed and removable cargo bin which is accessed via the rear hatch. The bin is designed for day-to-day items and fits neatly underneath a structural cross brace that adds extra stiffness to the shell and accentuates the sporting nature of the car.

It sort of looks like a high riding 2+2 version of the GT-R, but don’t expect it to be powerful like the GT-R, though we have seen one example of that! Nissan could theoretically fit the 1.6-liter turbocharged direct-injection inline-four that also powers the unusual DeltaWing racecar , driving either the front wheels or all four through a Continuously Variable Transmission, a favorite addition of Nissan.

The production version of this concept will be sold only in the South American market. For now, people outside South America can only expect future crossover models to extract design cues from this concept.

Acura NSX Concept

We saw the Acura NSX Concept at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show and we were all pretty much amazed by it. Unfortunately, at that time, Honda had no concrete idea of when the NSX would see production, and left us hanging by telling us that it would be in showrooms within three years. Since then, we have speculated about just as far as we can.

Well, according to Auto Express, that speculation may be over sooner than we expected, as it is reporting that a Honda rep said that the production NSX would debut at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show. Oddly enough, this is the same exact show that the 2014 Corvette will debut at. Looks as if we are in for a new-sports-car showdown to launch 2013.

The exact details of the NSX are really unknown, but according to Auto Express’s report, the production NSX will be “identical” to the concept model we saw this past January. Additionally, the Acura NSX will wear a “Honda ” badge in the UK, as is standard for many UK-sold Acuras. In the U.S., however, we expect it to retain the Acura name.

We’ll keep an eye out for more information on the upcoming NSX and we’ll watch out for any confirmation from Honda regarding this rumored unveiling.
