  A crossover SUV or XUV is an automobile with a sport utility vehicle appearance but is built upon a more economical and fuel-efficient car-based platform.

The Sportage has been a solid crossover offering in a highly competitive segment in recent years, and for 2014, Kia is giving it a slight makeover in hopes to keep it competitive. Although the Sportage has been around longer than Kia might care to remember (1993-2010), the CUV got a very nice, ground-up redo for 2011 after Hyundai /Kia hired Peter Schreyer from Audi to be their Chief Design Officer in 2006.

Once the Sportage went under the Schreyer knife, the CUV’s popularity skyrocketed with its much more handsome appearance and resemblance to its other Kia cousins. That third generation is still ongoing, though for 2014, the Korean automaker has reshaped its front end ever so slightly and added a few bells and whistles to keep buyers interested.

Sales for the Sportage spiked in 2011 when the third generation came to market, beating the previous year’s 23,873 sales figures by over double at 47,463. Since then, sales have steadily slumped to only 32,965 units sold for 2013. A slightly altered look, swanky new interior features, and a revised engine seem to be what Kia’s hopes for a brighter sales forecast are riding on. The question is, will those new additions be enough?

Starting with the exterior, Kia has given the Sportage a more three dimensional design that seems to convey a higher level of refinement to the CUV. Backing up that perceived refinement is an updated infotainment system that relies heavily on voice commands that help keep the driver’s eyes on the road and hands on the wheel. Lastly, a revised base engine adds power the Sportage by bringing direct injection to the table.

The Chicago Auto Show has officially arrived and Kia is getting things started off with a few milestone announcements; starting with the all-new 2015 Soul EV.

The Soul EV represents the first ever all-electric , zero-emissions vehicle from the Korean company on U.S. soil. On top of its electric propulsion system, the Kia EV was recognized by the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) for integrating more than 20 bio-friendly materials in the construction.

Kia is promising up to 100 miles of “real world” range out of its lithium battery and says that interior space is barely impacted by the addition of the addition of the electron storage.

Kia hopes to have the new Soul EV in dealerships by this fall with California, Oregon, New York, New Jersey and Maryland as the first markets. These regions were chosen for their relatively large EV infrastructures.

Updated 09/11/2014: Kia revealed prices for the new Soul EV which is now available at dealers nationwide. The model will be offered in two trims: Base and Plus, with prices starting from $33,700 - not including federal tax rebate of $7,500.

So, what happens when a Kia Soul and a Chevy HHR decide to have little babies? Well, you get this really, really weird concept that showed its awkward self at the Delhi Auto Expo . We’re not saying that the Adra Concept is ugly or anything... well, okay, maybe we are, but it at least falls under the 4 meter (157-inch) length required for a tax break in India, right? No sir, it does not. The Adra is actually 4.2 meters (165 inches), so you can nix that thought.

Honestly though, from the front end, the Adra Concept actually looks fairly decent, though that high roof is not my cup of tea. Its front fascia is pretty stylish and modern, the apron is sporty, and its sweptback headlights are really sharp. Around back, however, things quickly head south, as it is way too bland and that short rear overhang combined with the high roofline just looks strange.

What the Adra offers is a high seating position, so drivers get a good view of the road, more ground clearance and a pretty roomy cabin for its relatively petite footprint.

There’s no mention of what’s going on under the hood, but we wouldn’t be shocked to see it come with the same 1.0-liter, three-cylinder engine found in the Chevy Beat — called the Spark in the U.S. — with about 60 horsepower.

We’re willing to bet (read: hope) that this model stays right at home in India, if it ever reaches production.

The venerable Highlander has been a strong seller for Toyota since its debut back in 2001, when it helped usher in the era of uni-body crossovers. Back then, the Highlander represented a solid alternative to the mundane four-door sedan with its higher ground clearance, upright view of the road and tidy dimensions. Five passengers and a decent amount of cargo could trudge though snow or down wooded paths with more confidence than in a Camry , thanks to the available all-wheel drive. The little CUV That Could embodied the premise of the whole crossover craze; combining the on-road manners of a car with SUV -like capabilities in a smart package.

The Highlander moved into its second generation in 2008, and received a mid-life refresh in 2010. Those changes helped it stay competitive, but the time has come for the next generation. Enter: the all-new 2014 Highlander.

Everything inside and out has a new look. Sharper, crisper lines make the CUV more manly and rugged, while its overall look still labels it as civilized. It rides on the same wheelbase but has grown some three inches, giving more rear passenger legroom.

An eight-passenger configuration is available on mid-level trims, and a powerful 3.5-liter V-6 can send power to all four wheels when the right option boxes are checked. Both the four-cylinder and hybrid models return for 2014, but with improved fuel economy.

I had the chance to drive the Highlander through the “snowpocalypse of 2014” along the icy streets of Charleston, South Carolina, as the town suffered its first snowfall in years.

Dodge will expand its Journey lineup with the addition of a new Crossroad version that it will unveil at the 2014 Chicago Auto Show . It comes just a few weeks after Dodge announced that 2013 model year was the Journey’s best sales year ever, and Dodge hopes that this new version of the model will enjoy the same success as the rest of the Journey lineup.

The new Journey Crossroad will be distinguished by a specially designed front and rear fascia, platinum chrome and black elements, plus a series of updates for the interior. The only problem is that the model comes with pretty much no upgrades under the hood, so the customers will have to choose between the usual four-cylinder and V-6 engines.

The new Dodge Journey Crossroad will be placed between the current SXT and Limited models in the Journey lineup and will be priced from $24,995. Sales will begin later this spring.

Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class

Given the expansion of models Mercedes-Benz is going through these days, the company just might run out of letters to name its models.

According to Auto Express, the German automaker is reportedly working on a baby crossover , which it will slot just below the recently-revealed GLA-Class . The name of the model is the X-Class, and judging by its nomenclature, we won’t be surprised if Mercedes targets the young market for this baby crossover.

Besides, the CLA-Class needs a running mate, right? And what better model to do that than this reported X-Class.

On a more serious note, we don’t mind having a new Merc to choose from. Not that we can afford each and every one of ’em, but in a market where its competitors are doing their own expansions, Mercedes would be a fool to think that it can sit on its laurels and let its existing line do the fighting for them.

If the BMWs and Audis of the world are busy lining up new models for its customers, there’s no reason why Mercedes should’t do the same. There’s also some whispers that the X-Class isn’t going to be just one model, but an entire range of entry-level models that will give birth to other variants in the future. Maybe an XLA, or an X AMG?

It’s too early to say at this point, but if its the route Mercedes is choosing, we’re not going to stand up against it.

Suzuki unveiled the IV-4 — a concept car that previews a new crossover that will replace the Grand Vitara — at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. And now our spy photographers caught a prototype of the production version is out testing.

As you can see, the prototype is heavily camouflaged, so it’s pretty difficult to know what is hiding beneath. Still, considering an SX4 was testing next to it, and that it was wearing the typical Suzuki camo, it pretty evident that this is s Suzuki crossover of some sort, likely the next-gen Grand Vitara.

This new Grand Vitara will use Suzuki’s latest ALLGRIP four-wheel-drive system, but it will also come in your basic front-wheel-drive setup.

Suzuki promised that this new crossover will lightest model in its class, with lowest fuel consumption and the lowest CO2 emissions.

Though we are not 100-percent certain that this new crossover will carry the Grand Vitara name, we are pretty sure that we’ll see it in 2015. Sorry U.S. buyers, Suzuki does not plan to sell it, or any other model, in the U.S. any time soon...

When Nissan unveiled the Murano CrossCabriolet at the 2010 Los Angeles Show, it entered a zone of the market that had never really been explored before, as it was the world’s first all-wheel-drive crossover convertible. Since then, the Murano CrossCabriolet continued nearly no updates to speak of, and much of the same carries into 2014.

So, how did the Murano become a convertible crossover? With a lot of work, of course, and a tiny bit of insanity on from Nissan’s R&D department. In order to obtain this crazy transformation, the front doors were stretched by 7.9 inches, and the B-Pillars and rear doors were eliminated. Nissan’s mad scientists then hacked off the roof and replaced it with a cloth convertible top with a rear skylight.

For the 2014 model year, Murano Crosscabriolet will be offered in one fully equipped model with prices starting at $41,995.

With the next auto show scheduled to take place after the calendar turns to 2014, a number of automakers are already gearing up for it before the holiday break arrives.

One of these companies is Audi and to no one’s surprise, the German company has gotten the ball rolling with a preview of a crossover concept that it plans to unveil at the Detroit Auto Show in January.

Billed as the "new Audi show car," the yet-to-be-named crossover coupe concept is being touted as a preview of what we can expect from Audi moving forward, specifically as it pertains to certain visual elements in the concept that will be translated to its future lineup of sports cars .

That’s a lot take in, especially considering the "coupe -like nature" of this particular concept, particularly the certain designs that are undeniably sporty in nature. There’s a tornado line on the sides that emphasize a distinctively aggressive character. There are short overhangs and a low roof, thicker-than-usual C-pillars, aluminum underbody guards, and of course, a new set of 19-inch alloy wheels that mesh well with the somewhat-staunch and muscular look of this concept.

The interior, it appears, has a 2+2 seating configuration, although what appears to be lack of backrests on the front seats leaves us a little confused as to what Audi’s going for with this. There’s a flat-bottom steering wheel, which is a nice touch, and the full-length center console definitely adds personality to the concept.

We expect to hear more about this new crossover coupe concept when the Detroit Auto Show comes around. Until then, these teaser photos will give you a clear indication of what to expect before the concept makes its world debut.

Updated 01/10/2014: With just a few days before its official debut at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show, the first images of Audi’s new compact crossover leaked onto the internet. Earlier this year, Volvo unveiled the Concept Coupe — the first of three concepts — based on the company’s new Scalable Product Architecture. The coupe was a design study commissioned to give us a glimpse of the future Volvo design direction.

Now under the watchful eye of Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President of Design, the Swedish car maker has unveiled the second concept dubbed the Concept XC Coupe.

Per Volvo’s naming convention, ’XC’ is the prefix used for all things SUV . So, the Concept XC is nothing but a showcase future Volvo SUV designs, and it will show its face at the upcoming 2014 Detroit Motor show . This being a concept, Volvo has not revealed any technical details as of yet.

Like all manufacturers, Volvo too is switching to modular construction in order to keep a tab on development costs. The company’s Scalable Product Architecture will underpin all future Volvo cars, including crossovers , full-size SUVs and sedans .

Update 1/8/2014: With only a few days before it does its full undressing in Detroit, the Volvo Concept XC Coupe has dropped cover and revealed a few details about itself. You can see more after the jump.
