A crossover SUV or XUV is an automobile with a sport utility vehicle appearance but is built upon a more economical and fuel-efficient car-based platform.

Lexus again stretches the design envelope with its latest and second version of the LF-NX crossover , the LF-NX Turbo concept. Based on the hybrid version that debuted at the Frankfort Motor Show , Lexus’ new Luxury Utility Vehicle breaks ground for Lexus in the turbo world and continues the company’s development into some very futuristic-looking user interfaces.

The turbo is mounted to a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder that “paves the way for the introduction of turbocharged powerplants in future Lexus models.” The engine features Lexus’ advanced high tumble port, fan spray fuel injection, D-4S and VVT-iw combustion technologies; along with a cylinder head-integrated exhaust manifold. The twin-scroll turbocharger features an active wastegate valve for better computer controllability.

Outside, this Lexus looks sharp – literally. If Sweeney Todd used an electric razor to decapitate his victims, it would look like the LF-NX front grille. The angular lines and deep crevasses lend an intimidating look, while the tall stance gives it a purely aggressive attitude. Perhaps the only thing not aggressive about the LF-NX Turbo is the segment name Lexus tagged it with: Luxury Utility Vehicle, or LUV for short. Images of the small Chevrolet pickup from the 1970s are conjured up – something Lexus probably doesn’t want associated with its new luxury crossover.

While the exterior looks like an instrument of malicious intent, the interior looks like the bridge of the Starship Enterprise in the last two J.J. Abrams movies. The inputs and controls are branded the “Human Machine Interface” and feature the latest iteration of Lexus’ upper display zone and lover operation zone dashboard design. The operation-portion of the dash houses what Lexus calls “a new generation of touch-sensitive, electrostatic switches” and new Remote Touch Interface, or RTI. The RTI is a touch tracer display with an updated design over Lexus’ current touch pad and is designed for easier use.

Overall the Lexus LF-NX Turbo is a compelling design with an incredible amount of innovative features. And since Lexus is spending money on a two LF-NX concept vehicles, we’d be surprised if they didn’t make production.

Toyota seems to be on course to give us a different take on its new vehicles, or at least those that we’re accustomed to seeing from the Japanese automaker. Instead of the usual list of models, Toyota is using the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show to present a handful of concept models that fall under the Aqua name.

After introducing the Air Roadster Concept , Toyota is following that up with the Aqua C Crossover Concept — a compact hybrid vehicle that the company is presenting as a potential future crossover. Maybe there’s a future for this crossover, possibly even in Japan, or maybe there isn’t, but the vehicle, like the other two it rolls with, looks pretty bubbly and could be a nice for the younger markets.

As far as the concept itself goes, Toyota gave it a nice design touch, complete with an identifiable front grille, skid plates, aggressive wheel arches, and roof rails. Who knew; this concept has a lot of functionality to it, too.

Toyota has made no announcement on what lies ahead for the Aqua C Crossover Concept, but the good news is that we should find out soon enough when the Tokyo Motor Show opens its doors in a few days.

To commemorate the annual Vans Warped Tour, Kia and Popular Mechanics are tapping into their youthful and fun spirits to present a Kia Soul that defies explanation at the 2013 SEMA Auto Show.

The specially created crossover was designed and developed with the idea of taking to the road to enjoy the famous touring music and extreme sports festival. If there ever was a car that captures the idea and essence of the Vans Warped Tour, it’s this one.

Not only does the Soul carry a custom, albeit bombastic, paint finish that was inspired by the colors of the tour itself, Popular Mechanics and Kia decided to give it an eye-catching airbrush artwork detail, complete with references to the blending in of the music and action sports worlds. The windows of the Soul are all gone, and in their place are custom-built fiberglass body panels, each housing a pair of Infinity eight-inch speakers. Wonder how you can appreciate the outside world when you’re inside this vehicle?

But thoughtful musings like those are far from the objective of this Soul, as this specially-produced crossover has one objective in mind: to bring the spirit of the Vans Warped Tour to life inside a rolling set of wheels. A 50-inch flat-panel monitor has also been mounted atop the car with running footage from the tour itself so you never miss out on the experience of the festival.

Finally, a slide-out rear barbeque was also fitted into the this Soul, giving you the full music-inspired tailgating experience so you can enjoy the tour like nobody’s business.

Museums are often times housed inside massive buildings; a lot of us know that.

Apparently, Kia is looking to reinvent the way museums are developed and with the help of RIDES Magazine, the Korean automaker has turned one of its Soul crossovers into an actual museum. Really, there are plenty of signature items inside this Soul that’ll make you consider foregoing that trip to Cleveland.

It’s a veritable music museum on wheels, filled with memorabilia from a variety of industry icons. There’s a guitar signed by Slash, a G-Unit sneaker signed by 50 Cent, a Jimi Hendrix gold album, and a signed John Legend microphone. All these items are displayed in Plexiglass enclosures — hand-built, by the way — in the Soul’s trunk, rear windows, and rear hatch insert.

If that’s not enough to truly identify this Soul as a true one-of-a-kind, the collaborators used gold and platinum records as the overarching influence of the crossover, highlighted by a PPG waterborne platinum silver paint, gold exhaust tips and a set of 20-inch anodized gold HRE 935 wheels.

Even the interior wasn’t spared from getting its own detailing. A custom black suede and leather interior are the highlighted and complemented nicely by gold diamond stitching and painted trims.

So you have a Kia Soul that’s been turned into a museum; a Soul that has a DJ mixer on its roof; and a Soul that pays homage to The Voice. Wonder what else the company can think of, right?

Well, this collaboration between Kia and Popular Mechanics has the answer. Like its name suggests, the Amped Soul is all about bringing even more boom to the small crossover, specifically those ear-gasmic JBL speakers that somehow are strong enough to allow the actual Soul to sit on top of them.

We don’t know how the crossover is going to move with those speakers underneath it, but hey, those 22-inch Forgiato custom three-piece wheels are a sight in their own. Add that to the custom Pearl White paint finish and the blacked-out windows, and you have a Soul that would actually look like a decent option when you’re in the market for one.

Unfortunately, the Amped Soul is just a show car, albeit one that can make your ears bleed faster than the time it takes for you to throw on ear protection. A full-on JBL Pro Live surround equipment has been integrated into the rear-hinged doors, while LED ambient lighting on the interior and four 12-inch Infinity1 power subwoofers are responsible for only drawing a right mood to the cabin, but also putting on a speaker show on four wheels the likes of which you probably will never see again.

After unveiling the concept version at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show, Lincoln unveiled today the first official details on the 2015 MKC , which is set to roll into showrooms in the summer of 2014.

As you can see, the production model retains nearly all of the design elements from the concept version, except for the conventional door handles, the less aggressive exhaust system and some changes on the taillight graphics. Overall, however, the production model remains pretty true to the concept the preceded it.

As the concept revealed, the 2015 MKC will adopt a new design language inspired by the 2013 MKZ , like the signature split-wing grille and the wraparound liftgate. What’s really cool about the new MKC is that it is the first premium crossover to offer a 2.3-liter, EcoBoost four-cylinder engine, alongside the base 2.0-liter EcoBoost.

Updated 05/15/2015: Lincoln unveiled a very cool commercial for the 2015 MKC featuring Samuel Page. Called "Dream Ride", the new commercial presents an immersive and interactive journey with the new Lincoln MKC. Enjoy!

The lineup of Kia Souls that rolled into the 2013 SEMA Auto Show are all musically inclined, including the DJ Booth Soul, which was transformed into what Kia describes as the "ultimate DJ booth on wheels"

With all five Soul models offering something totally unique, the DJ Booth Soul is the only that doesn’t have a roof. In place of the actual roof, Kia and RIDES magazine decided that it would be a good idea to install a pro-grade Pioneer CDJs and mixer. Don’t worry about trying to get comfortable in the back seat, because the rear seats were also taken out in favor of putting an actual custom diamond-plated stage.

Before we get too drawn into all the DJ paraphernalia added to this Soul , we should give due props to the purple and turquoise accents of the crossover, a two-color combination that was used to pay homage to its EDM and hip-hop influences. LED lighting, front and rear strobes, and speaker enclosures built into the lower grille are also part of the overall package, while 19-inch Rotiform BRU wheels wrapped in Continental tires round out the exterior upgrades.

In addition to the aforementioned stage inside the cabin of the Soul, the interior was also given a three-prong design touch that includes black leather, graphite suede and turquoise stitching, giving it a lounge-like feel that plays well into the whole motif of the program. A Maschine Mikro production studio was molded into the passenger-side dash, while Kia also added a Pioneer audio system that includes five amplifiers, three component speakers, two 10-inch and two 12-inch Champion Series subwoofers, and a sound bar housing four coaxial speakers, putting a resounding stamp on the DJ theme of this extraordinary Soul.

The Fiat 500L is probably not the first - or tenth - vehicle you’d associate with accompanying you on your off-road travails.

But that’s the beauty of a show like SEMA ; you see cars turned into something you wouldn’t have accepted and they’re all the better for it!

That’s the case with this Mopar-tuned Fiat 500L, called the Adventurer.

One look at its name and you immediately recognize that this 500L wasn’t built to be a city-dweller, like the standard model is supposed to be. Yet you see that the crossover is pretty versatile in it of itself because the 500L Adventurer looks one heck of a rugged hell raiser.

The 500L Adventurer also has a performance upgrade, thanks to a new Mopar cold-air intake and cat-back exhaust. No word yet on how much of an output increase it’ll have, but we’re preparing ourselves for a significant increase in performance.
