  There are some people out there that can just put pen to paper and come up with beautiful and intricate designs worthy of production. Granted, most of these concepts or design studies will never see the light of production day, but they absolutely warrant some attention in the automotive industry.

When Thibault Devauze was just an intern at Land Rover, he was handed a big job of designing a crossover SUV to rival the likes of the X6 and the Bentley Continental GTC — an eclectic set of rivals, huh? The project had only a few real rules: make it luxurious, make it a coupe, price it above €100K, and give it the biggest, baddest engine that Land Rover had to offer.

With these guidelines and the base chassis of the Range Rover Sport Supercharged, Devauze came up with the LRGT Concept. After six weeks of designing and sketching, Devauze and two modelers came up with the first ever CAD images of his brainchild. Since then, he has used that model to come up with final results of the concept that, according to his claims, are still on the table at Land Rover.

This model is pegged to sit at the top of Land Rover’s Range Rover lineup. It boasts Lad-Rover’s famed front end with a slight twist, as it rakes rearward more than most current Land Rover SUVs, sans the Evoque . As you stretch over its shallow-raked, hood you come to a roofline that dives into the back end of the crossover. Around the back end you get a pair of circular taillights that cap off a sleek rump and pair of oblong tail pipes are integrated in with the rear bumper.

From the side profile, you find an awesome reverse-wedge design that just seems to fit perfectly with the sharp upper beltline and the massive pair of doors designed to replace the typical 4-door SUV setup.

The driving force under the hood of this massive 4,850 mm (190 –inch) long x 1,995 mm (78-inch) wide x 1,510 mm (59-inch) wide 2,095 kg (4,618-pound) crossover is Land Rover’s supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 engine that pumps out 540 PS (532 horsepower) and 725 Nm (534 pound-feet) of torque.

From the looks of it, this appears to be the big brother of the Evoque, but we’ll find out in the coming years if this is a production concept or just another one that will be filed away for future model design.

Bentley EXP 9 F

When Bentley revealed the oddly named EXP 9 F Concept SUV , some of us cheered out of delight, but many almost cringed at its gaudy appearance. To call a Bentley gaudy is like calling most pop singers “Divas;” it’s pretty much a given. But the EXP 9 F was a little over the top – to say the least.

In a recent interview, Bentley spokesperson, Martin Broomer, made reference to the possibility of the EXP 9 F undergoing a bit of a redesign before it is re-revealed around the end of 2012. Bentley made it clear that the EXP 9 F was a show car and not a “dressed-up preproduction car,” which means it will likely be scaled down a bit in production.

We’ll see exactly how far Bentley takes this revision to this controversial concept. We do know that Bentley won’t strip it of the typical over-the-top design of its vehicles, but it does need some mild adjustments.

For now, all we can do is sit and wait until Bentley feeds us a little information on what it has in store for its debut SUV. One thing is for sure, this tweaking is a solid indicator that this is a little more than just another concept; Bentley is serious about jumping into the ultra-premium SUV segment.

Generally, we don’t like to focus on design concepts, but this particular one caught our attention because it is simply amazing, and it gives us something Lamborghini -related to look at until the company unveils the Gallardo Nova at the 2012 Paris Auto Show.

This new concept is called the Lamborghini Perdigon and was designed by Ondrej Jirec, a final year Transport Design student at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. The concept car was named after a famous fighting bull to follow along with Lamborghini tradition and was designed to compete with models like the ever-sumptuous Bugatti Veyron .

Jirec styled his Perdigon Concept after the Lamborghini Reventon which took its design inspiration from stealth jets. He then took that inspiration a step further adding sharp angles and polygonal surfaces reminiscent of aircrafts like the F117 Nighthawk and the F22 Raptor. The vehicle also features a very unusually large air intake mounted just below the windscreen. The futuristic look of the exterior continues on the interior, where inspiration was taken from fighter jet canopies.

We can ogle this concept car all we want, but truth of the matter is it will never make it to production.

We still need to wait until 2013 to see the new generation Mercedes S-Class , but in order to keep the momentum going and the curiosity peaking, Mercedes has created this very cool sculpture that offers a quick peek at the luxury sedan’s design language. The new Aesthetics S sculpture will be on display at the 2012 Paris Motor Show from September 27th to October 14th.

The new "Aesthetics S" sculpture features a very cool artistic interpretation of the future luxury saloon. Mercedes announced that it highlights the artistic aspects of design, but will also offer a modern sense of status, sensual shapes, and stylish sportiness.

"The characteristic lines of the S-Class have always represented the expression of automotive culture, as we understand it. The new S-Class will continue this tradition and, with its striking lines, will put a face to our design philosophy over the coming years", explains Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Mercedes-Benz Cars.

Last month, US tuner Stillen launched a contest that let fans be in charge of designing a Scion FR-S coupe. The winner would have his design built by Stillen in addition to winning a two-night stay in Las Vegas for this year’s SEMA Show. His very own design would also be exhibited at the SEMA floor. So with a month to prepare and design their own versions of the FR-S, over 100 designers took up Stillen’s offer and put their designing hats to good use, all while using only a number of Stillen’s templates.

In the end, the US tuner picked five of its favorite designs, including two from Greg Thompson and one each from Paul Kim, Mohamad Irfendy, and Michael Caneda. From here, the power turns to the public where they get the chance to pick their favorite designs.

Voting is already underway so if you like one of these designs more than the others, let your clicks matter.

A huge part of being an automotive journalist is being able to speculate with a little accuracy. You take some facts, read between the lines, and piece together an educated guess. The folks at Trinity Animation, though they are not automotive journalists, have taken to some high-tech automotive speculation.

They have taken all of the leaked information on the C7 Corvette , which we expect to see sometime in 2013, and pieced together a pretty awesomely detailed animation of the new `Vette. The video shows a Corvette unlike any that we’ve ever seen before.

Typically, the `Vette takes more of the sports car route with its soft curves and sporty look. From this video, which is derived from various Corvette leaks , we see a more supercar-like Corvette, boasting hard-angles and a stunning fastback that screams “supercar.” The additional heat-extraction vents strewn around the `Vette’s body are a nice touch too. Oh, the Camaro -inspired taillights are also a nice touch.

The question on the tips of our tongues is, is this an accurate rendition of the 2014 Corvette? The answer to that question is most likely not, but we sure as hell hope so, because that car looks sexy!

Chevy has always been very careful when making changes to the Corvette. It took Chevy 42 years to finally axe the outdated pop-up headlights, so a significant change is really unlikely. We’ll likely see the longer fastback-style roof, but the Camaro-inspired taillights would kill the long-standing twin-circle Corvette taillight tradition. The harder body lines are long overdue, but Chevy will likely not go as extreme as most people are thinking, or hoping.

For now, we just have to wait and see what Chevy shows us as we proceed toward the 2014 model year. Until then, we’ll continue to keep an eye out for more Chevy leaks.


Every car nut has daydreamed about building a car. Hell, we do on a daily basis, and building one in real life would cost more money than we could ever imagine having in our checking accounts. Let’s suspend reality for a tick here and imagine that someone handed you a blank check and asked for you to build the ultimate supercar.

Well, we are going to go over all of the supercars and lay out what pieces from which cars would come together to create the ultimate supercar Frankenstein. Now, there are some rules here. We have to make sure things are feasible. Things like slapping a W-16 Veyron engine into a Lotus Elise will not work, therefore it flat out can’t be done.

We’ll review our favorites in each of the three major categories — body and chassis, engine, and transmission — and end it all up by giving you our estimated specifications for our new vehicle.

McLaren made their intentions on creating a small, stripped-out supercar clear when they announced a design contest asking students enrolled in the Royal College of Art’s vehicle design course to imagine a minimalist McLaren supercar. Now, the winner of that contest has been chosen and may just be a starting point to McLaren’s future model.

The McLaren JetSet designed by Marianna Merenmies uses an electric motor and uses extensive amounts of carbon fiber on the chassis, body, and wheels. The concept measures just 3.7 meters long and 1.03 meters high, and has a proposed drag coefficient of 0.20.

When asked about the future model, McLaren Design boss Frank Stephenson said: "It’s about making more of less. It’s our job to push automotive technology — to make the car safer, lighter, more powerful, more efficient, eco-friendly and more fun to drive."

Expect to see the new supercar launched in 2015 with an intended price of £50,000, or about $78,000 at the current exchange rates.

US tuner Stillen has come up with a new way to produce aftermarket programs; they want you to actually design the programs for them.

The idea isn’t entirely new because we’ve seen other tuners go down this road before, but Stillen is upping the ante by letting its readers design aerodynamic kits for the Scion FR-S . Design submissions will be accepted through August 14, 2012 and can be sent to frscontest@stillen.com. All you have to do is download Stillen’s templates, design the front lip, side skirts, and rear valance (no full bumpers allowed). The design material is limited to only urethane; no carbon fiber, folks. Likewise, submissions must either be hand-drawn or digital.

The tuning company will then select the top five designs and post them on their Facebook page where fans will get a chance to vote through a poll. The winning submission, which will be announced on August 20th, will have their design built by Stillen and will also receive a two-night stay in Las Vegas and be part of SEMA 2012 where their design will be revealed for the first time.

So if you’re a young and ambitious designer, here’s your chance to make a name for yourself in the industry.

In the early years of the automotive industry, the interior was simply somewhere to park your behind as you drove around. In the modern era, car interiors are becoming more like a second home, as they are now featuring climate control, TVs, huge sound systems, plush fabrics, and much more. Due to the constantly changing automotive world, automakers need to make sure that they are producing the best interiors possible, or risk losing sales to the competition.

Ford has taken this competition to a new level, as it is now using a robotic system to determine the quality of its cars’ interiors. This new robotic touch system is called Robotized Unit for Tactility and Haptics (RUTH). For those on the same vocabulary level as me and needing a more plain English description, this is a robot that uses sensors to determine the pain, pressure, or heat that a human’s skin would feel when touching something, which then turns that touch sensation into scalable data.

The above video shows Ford engineers describing RUTH as she touches and probes multiple points throughout the cabin of the all-new Ford Fusion . RUTH then uses data that Ford has collected from thousands of customers around the world and determines if the pieces it tests meet the collective wants of Ford buyers. From there, Ford engineers can adjust the texture, feel, softness, or even temperature of something in the cabin.

RUTH has been in commission in Ford North America since January 2012 and it looks like it is a complete success, at least according to the video. With advancements like this, it is easy to see why Ford was able to keep its head above water through the automotive recession.
