Dodge Avenger

The Dodge Avenger is a front wheel drive, mid-size sedan first introduced to the market as a two door coupe. It was re-introduced to the market in 2008 as a four door sports sedan. It is only available in two trim levels: SXT and the R/T.

The Avenger is powered by a choice of two different engines. The first is a 2.4L I4 mated to a 4-speed automatic. This engine option provides 173HP and 166 lb-ft of torque. The second option is a 3.5L V6 mated to a 6-speed automatic which gives the driver 235HP and 232 lb-ft of torque. This isn’t your Hemi-powered Charger, but it will do for those not ready for that kind of power.

2009 Dodge Avenger SXT

The Dodge Avenger is certainly a vehicle that makes you reevaluate the entry level car market. Starting out at $21,500 the four door mini Charger may seem like a good deal, however after checking enough option boxes to make it a V6 powered Official Passenger Car of NASCAR complete with navigation and a set of stylish 18 inch wheels just like our fully loaded 2009 Avenger SXT, the price creeps up pretty close to the $30,000 mark. The Dodge Avenger is the smallest sedan in the Chrysler lineup and because of that it carries a few styling cues from its larger four door brother, the bold faced Charger, with touches like a squared off front end and bulging fender flares and a solid looking rear end.

Covered in a beautiful coat of Deep Water Blue Pearl paint our Avenger SXT came equipped with stain resistant cloth seats and a 2.7 Liter six cylinder engine mated to a four speed automatic transmission that made 187 HP while returning an estimated 19 MPG around town and as much as 27 MPG on the highway. Heavily optioned with features like a power everything including a sunroof, Chrysler’s Uconnect GPS with Sirius satellite radio, remote start and a cup holder that can either cool or warm its contents depending on what you wish, not to mention the $740 destination charge; a well equipped Avenger like this one will set you back a total of $27,955. Quite a bit more then you would expect to pay for Dodge’s smallest offering.

Initial thoughts: 2009 Dodge Avenger SXT

We recently received a Deep Water Blue Pearl 2009 Dodge Avenger SXT in our Top Speed test fleet. The Avenger is the smallest sedan in the Chrysler lineup and because of that it carries a few styling cues from its larger brother, the Charger. Aside from the captivating pearlescent paint our Avenger’s most attractive feature are the blistered fender flares that house 18 inch thick five spoke rims and the bold hump in the rear quarter panel that gives this little front wheel drive four door the stance of a bona fide muscle car along with the sharp front lip and rear wing.

The Avenger’s seats are wrapped in stain resistant black cloth while almost every other surface is made out of some kind of plastic, but the Dodge design team did manage to dress it up with some shiny trim in a few key places, like on the door speaker, handle and lock. Our Avenger SXT also comes with a few nice interior appointments like Chrysler’s uconnect multimedia GPS system that incorporates the radio, hard disk navigation unit and Sirius real time traffic information into a well laid out touch screen display right in front of the driver. Just below that piece of user friendly technology is one of the coolest cup holders in any vehicle, because it will either heat or chill your beverage depending on what you want it to do.

Chrysler prepares to replace Sebring and Avenger

After Fiat has bought Chrysler, the first decision is to replace the models that are considered as being unsuccessful in Chrysler line-up: Sebring and Avenger. Both models will be replaced by a model based on the Chrysler 200C EV.

Production version could be based on either the LX platform that was used for the concept and that can be built in both rear-wheel and all-wheel drive configurations. The second choice is Fiat’s D-Evo platform used for the 2011 replacement for the Alfa Romeo 159.

Sources say Chrysler is interested in the shortened LX platform and would not necessarily build the concept as shown. Also, the D-Evo suspension would likely be used on the LX platform. But if the concept was rear-drive, the production version could be a FWD model, because a RWD model is not good for the fuel economy.

Sebring replacement will be built on shared platform?

The Chrysler Sebring and the Dodge Avenger have long been a disappointment to Chrysler. As it comes time to change them, Chrysler is looking to replace the mid-sizers with a quality product in the least expensive way possible. There are three ways to go with the future cars, but all will likely ditch the Mitsubishi platform the twins are based on now. First option is for Chrysler to develop its own new platform. The second idea is to use either Fiat’s premium platform, or Nissan’s midsize (Altima), with distinct sheetmetal. The third option is using more than just the platform, and include the Fiat or Nissan firewall, A-pillar and windshield, kind of like Volkswagen’s new Routan minivan, based on the Chrysler minivans. In the end it’s likely that there will be less products to choose from as Chrysler well drop the four-door Sebring from the line up.

What do you think? What is the best move for Chrysler to make the Sebring more successful?

What’s In Store For Chrysler’s Sebring and Avenger?

The current generation Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Avenger have met with mixed reviews at best. Back in October rumors began to swirl that Chrysler was focusing in on some troublesome models including the Sebring and Avenger. To date Chrysler has publicly announced its intention to kill the Dodge Magnum, Chrysler Pacifica, PT Cruiser Convertible and the Chrysler Crossfire. What fate awaits the Sebring and Ave
