The Dodge Nitro is a compact SUV that started production back in 2006 as a 2007 model. The Nitro shares a platform with the second generation Jeep Liberty, but is lower, longer, and wider. The great thing about the Nitro is that it has a big cargo hold that is larger thanks to the squared off shape of the exterior of the vehicle.
The Nitro comes in two trim levels: the SE and SXT. These trims are offered with premium clothed trimmed seats or available leather trimmed seats in the SXT, six speakers, and standard front row active head restraints. Power comes from either a 3.7L V6 producing 210 HP and 235 lb-ft of torque or a 4.0L V6 delivering 260 HP and 265 lb-ft of torque.
The Caliber wasn’t the only model in Dodge’s lineup to receive a few changes. The Dodge Nitro will be entering the 2011MY with a new Heat 4.0 lifestyle package, adding to the Detonator, Shock, and Heat models that joined the family in 2010. The Heat 4.0 will bring with it a five-speed automatic transmission, standard Uconnect Phone, and an upgraded eight-speaker sound system. The 4.0 in the name comes from the 4.0-liter V-6 engine powering the system and delivering 260 HP and 265 lb.-ft. of torque.
Depending on the model, the Nitro will also get new cloth and leather with premium colored stitching, 20-in. aluminum wheels, Dodge Brand’s signature racing stripes, aluminum premium-painted wheels, heated leather seats, and a sunroof. Dodge also chose to add some new colors to the exterior, including Bright White Clear Coat, Blackberry Pearl Coat, Toxic Orange Pearl Coat, and Redline Two Coat Pearl.
Along with the 4.0L engine, customers will also be able to choose a 3.7-liter V-6 engine that delivers 210 HP and 235 lb.-ft of torque for their Dodge Nitro.
Looks like the Dodge Caliber and the Dodge Nitro failed to make a spark in the UK because the brand has decided to drop both models from their line-up across the Atlantic.
The cutting off of the Caliber and the Nitro leaves the Dodge Journey as the sole remaining model that’s being sold by Dodge in the UK. And if you so happen to look at Dodge’s UK website, you’ll notice that when you ’Select a vehicle’, you’re only given one choice in the Journey.
Kind of defeats the purpose of "choosing" a model, doesn’t it?
There’s no word on whether Dodge will be replacing the Caliber and the Nitro with other models from their fleet to sell in the UK, so as of now, British customers will pretty much have slim pickings when they’re looking for a Dodge to drive out on the highway.
Dodge line-up at the Detroit Auto Show will be all about special edition. One of them will be Nitro Detonator, a model priced at $25,995 (including $745 destination).
The new Dodge Detonator model features 20-inch Mopar polished/painted aluminum wheels, hood decal, eight speakers plus subwoofer, remote start, ParkSense® rear-park assist and color-keyed premium cloth interior that matches the exterior paint color.
Under the hood there is a 4.0-liter V-6 engine delivering a total of 260 hp and 265 lb.-ft. of torque with a five-speed automatic transmission.
Thanks to its highly distinctive design the Dodge Nitro has established a strong presence in the hard-fought SUV market. Cobra Technology & Lifestyle now offers high-quality German-made accessories for this model that meet the latest EU safety standards.
The Cobra Technology & Lifestyle engineers have developed a high-gloss stainless-steel tubular front guard for the American SUV that harmonizes visually with the chrome grille. The 60-millimeter guard is mounted elastically and absorbs energy in a crash.
The required crash test for homologation showed the innovative accessory to remain well below the limits set by the new EU guidelines for pedestrian protection. The accessory was awarded a general EG operating certificate, eliminating the need for individual technical inspections. For further optimized active safety the guard comes with mounts for auxiliary high-beam headlights.
The Nitro can be additionally or alternatively upgraded with the Cobra Technology & Lifestyle bumper grate made from high-gloss stainless steel. Cobra Technology & Lifestyle stainless-steel rocker panel guards are another good-looking and functional option. They protect the sides against accident damage and facilitate entering and exiting of the vehicle thanks to their integrated steps.
The Nitro is the newest star from the States. A rough character with ragged edges – perfect for putting on a show in town. For those seeking power to match its macho appearance, O.CT Tuning of Austria is pleased to offer a power upgrade for the SUV.
Via IPRO, O.CT Tuning reprograms the engine control module over the internet and connects to the OBD port. The entire process contains six steps and takes only 30 minutes. The Nitro’s output rises from 130 kW (177 hp) to 148 kW (202 hp). Maximum torque is increased as well, rising from 460 to 505 Nm providing massive thrust bewteen 1750 and 2500 rpm.
The results are impressive. The Nitro rockets to 100 km/h (62 miles per hour) in just 9,9 seconds versus 11,4 for the stock vehicle. The gap continues to grow up to 160 km/h (100 miles per hour), a speed the O.CT Nitro reaches in 26,5 seconds – a whopping nine seconds quicker than the standard Nitro 2.8 CRD. That translates into a 72 carlenghts lead in a head to head race.
The O.CT Nitro continues on to a top speed of 193 km/h (120 miles per hour), eclipsing the standard car by 11 km/h without sacrificing fragality in terms of fuel consumption, which remains comparable to the stock Nitro 2.8 CRD.
According to the Detroit Free Press newspaper, Chrysler has issued a recall for 80,000 Dodge Nitro and Jeep Wrangler vehicles. The vehicles’ engines can stall. According to the automaker, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received about 180 complaints about the problem. Apparently, the problem is due to an unexpected, though brief, of interruption of electrical power to the engine.

Oups! Tom LaSorda, Chrysler’s CEO got upset after Consumer Reports made their evaluation over the Sebring and the Dodge Nitro. As he says the company underestimated its competitors, set standards too low in some areas and was not where it needed to be in areas such as fuel economy, interior quality, and limiting noise and vibration.
As a result of this “embarrassing misses” extremely aggressive actions are to be taken. In an interview with Detroit News, Chrysler’s product (...) > Full story
The annual Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) trade show has witnessed the debut of a number of cutting-edge vehicles from Chrysler Group’s SkunkWerks team in the past few years. This year will be no different, as Mopar® and the SkunkWerks team will debut new custom vehicles at SEMA.
With hot rod flavor, this retro 2-door Dodge Nitro Panel Wagon also has modern flair. The Nitro Panel Wagon began as a statement about traditional hot rodding. It not only had to be a styling statement, it had to be functional, just as the speed shops did it the ‘50s and ‘60s. Modifying a standard Dodge Nitro by hand, the same way a custom car builder would. It’s Mopar-themed throughout – accessory, performance, and replacement parts
