Our motto at this website is ‘no boring cars’. Whether that’s sports cars, Italian exotics, or super luxurious sedans, we love them all. For this review though, we decided to change things up a bit. We wanted to find out what you can and can’t do in a truck during a week test and, living up to our motto, we went all out and got one of the biggest heavy duty trucks on the market, the 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 Heavy Duty Mega Cab.->ke220

The Ram 2500 might not be everyone’s choice for a daily driver and to be honest, it wasn’t ours either, but we put all that aside and used this four-door, four-wheel drive turbo diesel behemoth every day of the week, during which time we never came close to the truck’s full capabilities.

Although it couldn’t fit in our garage, or in a normal parking space, we did our best. Hit the jump to see how the week went and our new review style.

Exterior Thoughts

The most bind boggling area of the Ram 2500 is the sheer size of the thing. We won’t bore you with numbers and dimensions because those really don’t tell the whole story. What we will tell you is the fact that the truck will not fit in a parking space. You’ll need two, front to back spaces, but we recommend you take four because trying to turn this thing into one parking space is impossible.

We were never able to gaze upon the truck's roof unless we jumped up in the bed, although there wasn’t much to see, unlike the rest of the truck. The new 2010 Ram uses the same downsized semi truck look that was first invented back in 1994. Needless to say, it looks sensational on this massive machine.

To be bold, this is one of the best looking trucks on the market. It manages to be in your face, yet subtle. It’s not gaudy like the Ford Super Duty->ke1097, nor is it dull like the Chevrolet Silverado->ke1787 and GMC Sierra->ke241. Those silver features on the front of the truck aren’t actually chrome, but plastic. Normally that would be a knock on the Ram, but we would imagine owners of these gargantuan machines wouldn’t want their actual chrome grilles getting scratched up while they're doing work.

Remember how we said the exterior aspects of the truck weren’t in your face? While that might true for the overall design, the badges that are placed on the front fascia, fenders, and tailgate are just massive. Everybody you came across would know that you’re Dodge is a Heavy Duty Ram, powered by a Cummins diesel with enough torque to relocated that restaurant you love.

Making the chore of entering and exiting easier were two chrome steps on both sides of the vehicle and mirror-mounted lights for nighttime visibility. Still, you better be prepared for an adventure every time you climb up into the 2010 Ram.

Interior Thoughts

Once you’ve made yourself look like a fool getting in the Ram, you’ll be happy to know that the interior is impressive. In a truck that will be used to do work, it’s interesting to us that we have such luxurious amenities. Our test Ram came with leather, dual-mode climate control, adjustable pedals, navigation, Bluetooth, trailer brake controls, and heater seats. This is one of the most well appointed trucks on the market, as it’s covered in soft touch plastics of the up-most quality. The double stitching on the dash gives off a nice quality look as well.

As far as interior space goes, you would imagine that it would be like a limo considering the size of the vehicle. Well, you would be right. There is enough room in the front for the even the biggest person and in the back, the story remains the same. A while back, we tested out a Lexus LS460L with reclining back seats and we couldn’t help thinking that those would work well in the Ram.

Having all of this luxury available on a truck that is impossible to use on a daily basis and will likely spend its life as a work truck seems impractical, but after a week driving it, we were happy it was all there.

Driving Impressions

Powering this monster is a 350 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque 6.7-liter Cummins turbo diesel that is plenty powerful enough for any task assigned to it. According to Chrysler, the Ram HD can tow up to 17,000 pounds and it certainly feels like it, although we were never able to test it, as no company would let us haul their building away.

All those numbers might sound fantastic, but that’s not the whole story. We were never able to haul anything, but just looking at the height of the bed made us cringe. It would take a seriously massive ramp to load a bike or motorcycle and trying to haul mulch would take a human the height of Shaquille O’Neal just to get into the bed.

Even if you don’t want this truck for work purposes – which won’t be many of you – it’s not a bad thing to have around. The cabin was very comfortable and outstandingly quiet under most circumstances and only at the higher rpm would the diesel motor begin to make itself known.

The steering was well weighted, but had plenty of movement at the dead center. We know that this is a massive truck, but we would like it if the steering wheel felt connected to the wheels at times. Overall though, the steering was decent and the ride was on par with most heavy-duty trucks.

On the road you feel as if you are the king and that tiny Chevrolet Aveo->ke403 in front of you could be crushed under your massive tires. It’s a good feeling and, if you desired such a sensation, this Ram HD is the perfect choice. We, on the other hand, don’t suffer this desire to be king of the road, as we prefer handling and speed to girth and domination. As much as we loved the Ram, it wouldn’t be a must-buy in our books.

Conclusion

All that being said, it’s impossible not to love this thing. From the moment it first appeared we laughed at its sheer size, but grew to really appreciate its capabilities. We could never come close to testing the full potential of the 2010 Ram 2500 Laramie Mega Cab, but just the knowledge that you can tow whatever you want is satisfying. If you need a truck like this and have $55,780 to spend, the Dodge Ram is the best on the market.

Why we love it: Inside and out, the Ram is breath taking. The exterior looks sensational and the interior is as luxurious as a Lexus. The diesel motor has plenty of torque and the average person would never reach the truck's full capabilities. Not to mention it makes you feel like the king on any road.

Why we don’t like it: As a daily driver, the Ram HD is a chore. Parking it is impossible and filling it up is rather expensive. The $55,000 price tag is also pretty high for a work truck.

Overall Rank and Verdict – The 2010 Ram 2500 Mega Cab Laramie is, without a doubt, the best heavy-duty truck on the market.
