When did curtain airbags appeard?

Curtain Airbags (that protect the head on side impact) appeared in its current form in 1998 on Toyota Progres. A year before BMW was introducing the predecessor of the curtain airbag: this had a cylindrical form and basically had the same function. But the curtain airbags offered better protection, so BMW had nothing else to do than adopting the new system.
