Ferrari 612

The Ferrari 612 Scaglietti came about in 2004 ready to replace the smaller 456M. This 2+2 seater fastback coupe featured a 5.7L V12 engine that produced 532 HP and 434 lb-ft of torque. This engine was mated to a six-speed automated transmission.

The 612 Scaglietti’s life span was cut short in 2011 with the birth of its successor, the Ferrari FF.

Video: The Art of Building a Ferrari V12 Engine

The Ferrari 612 Scaglietti has already been written off production, marking the end of the line for a car that was the first V12 Ferrari to be built using an all-aluminum space frame and body-panel construction. Apparently, that sparked an idea within Ferrari to explain the meticulous detail the Italian automaker goes through in building these engines. We thought we could fathom just how detailed and painstakingly exhaustive these V12 engines were to build, but, well, we really had no clue until we saw this.

In this video, Ferrari describes the process of how this particular V12 engine for the 612 Scaglietti is built. From the sophisticated work of casting the main parts that will comprise the engine all the way up to the verification on the test bench and subsequent installation on the car, this video will show just how the recently-discontinued Ferrari 612 Scaglietti received all that power.

So the next time anyone happens to pop open the hood of any Ferrari model, they might want to take a second and look at that engine, and think of the back-breaking process it took to build it from the ground up. It’s a pretty impressive sight, to say the very least.

Ferrari will bring 612 Shooting Brake concept to Geneva Auto Show

For a few weeks now we’ve heard tons of rumors regarding Ferrari’s surprise model for the Geneva Motor Show, and we expect to hear a lot more until the officially unveiling. Today’s rumors suggest that the Italian brand will come to Geneva with a shooting brake concept based on the 612 Scaglietti, a preview version of their first ever estate model.

Although there is no name for this new model, Ferrari has announced that it has been created for two reasons: to see how far Ferrari can stretch its brand away from its traditional supercars, and to give the 612 Scaglietti a fitting send-off as the four-seat super coupé, launched in 2004, nears the end of its run. "We know there can never be a Ferrari SUV," one source insisted. "But we would like to find out what we can put the marque’s DNA into and still have it accepted as a Ferrari."

Something tells us that, when push comes to shove, Ferrari will find themselves in the SUV business just like Porsche did with their Cayenne model because, well, money talks. However, the focus for the time being will be this new shooting brake concept, which ties in just fine with the previous rumors of Ferrari bringing the successor for the 612 Scaglietti to Geneva.

We’ll see if this rumor holds water when the Geneva Show doors open on March 3rd.

Ferrari’s surprise in Geneva is the 612 Scaglietti successor

Before Christmas, Luca Cordero di Montezemolo announced that Ferrari would be headed to the 2011 Geneva Motor Show with something "different". Our early assumptions lead us to believe that he was talking about the next 612, but now we can confirm that this new model is in fact the successor for the current 612 Scaglietti. Bummer, we were kind of hoping to get a little something extra at Geneva.

Codenamed F151, the next 612 Scaglietti will combine front design elements from the 458 Italia with a rear end similar to the 599 Fiorano. The powertrain will be borrowed from the 599 HY-KERS that was revealed in Geneva this year. This hybrid system combines a V12 550 HP engine with an electric motor of 100 HP. This new system will help reduce fuel consumptions by 35% and will also help the new 612 Scaglietti to not exceed CO2 emissions of more than 280 grams of per kilometer.

Apparently, Ferrari took all of the reactions they received back in 2004 when they first unveiled the 612 and used them to make the decisions that would mold and shape the successor. The final product of these decisions will be waiting for all of us when the show doors open in March 2011.

Ferrari 612 GTO Concept by Sasha Selipanov

There are few car makers that evoke more emotion and passion than Ferrari. For decades their cars have captivated hearts and minds of young and old, male and female alike, and form the epitome of what driving at the very highest level is all about. Self proclaimed “Angry Car Designer” Sasha Selipanov has penned what has to be the most beautiful concept Ferrari of the last 30 odd years. No doubt the German designer has the Maranello design studios and the likes of Bertone and Pininfarina going green with envy. As Selipanov is not on the Ferrari pay roll, this isn’t an official concept and will likely never go any further towards production than it currently is – very very far away! As unfortunate as that may be, that doesn’t stop us from appreciating and ogling at the masterpiece he has created.

If you look closely, you will see design cues from cars in the current Ferrari model lineup, such as the headlights – which resemble those on the 458 Italia. There are obvious elements in the mix that take us down memory lane to the 60s Ferrari GTO models that are, to this day, utterly beautiful. The proportions bear resemblance to an Aston Martin and the overall shape seems to mimic an early Corvette with those trademark curvy hips and wide rear girth. The oh-so-sexy rear end has taillights that look a lot like those on the new Camaro and while we liken all of these elements to cars that exist, there is no detraction from its originality and how well the entire package comes together. It’s mean yet gorgeous at the same time, which begs the question; is true beauty in the eye of the beholder or the creator? Maranello, take note and bring us something like this. We dare you!

2011 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti

ferrari 612 scaglietti picture

The history of the 612 Scaglietti started in 2004 when Ferrari chose it as a successor for the smaller 456 M. It was designed as a 4 seater gran tourer with adequate space in the rear seats for adults. But, if we’re going to be honest, the 612 Scaglietti features the most out-dated design in all of the current Ferrari line-up.

Thankfully, Ferrari is coming to the rescue with a successor to the Scaglietti. This new model will be unveiled next March at the Geneva Motor Show with sales beginning in the summer of 2011. Prices are said to be in the 300,000 euro area.

Ferrari has already confirmed that the next 612 model will feature lots of modifications, including a gasoline-hybrid technology which is a system Ferrari developed from the KERS system it currently uses in Formula One race cars. This system was already previewed by the 599 GTB Fiorano HY-KERS concept unveiled earlier this year.

UPDATE 01/04/11: Now that we’ve gotten reports that the successor to the 612 Scaglietti was going to have a front end that resembles the 458 Italia, we dug up a spy video of a camouflaged Ferrari prototype doing some testing near Ferrari’s factory in Maranello a few months ago. Judging from what the overall shape of the car - it resembles that of the 612, doesn’t it? - and those 458-looking headlights, we’re curious if this could very well be the 612’s successor. The good thing is that we won’t have to wait long for our questions to be answered because the car is scheduled to have its world unveiling this March at the Geneva Motor Show.

Video: Ferrari 612 GTS Pavesi One-Off

As you know Ferrari is offering its clients a new program that would allow clients to create their own custom model right from the factory in Maranello. That if you have a lot of money! From the same program, here at TopSpeed we had the Ferrari P540 Superfast Aperta.

Today we will talk about the Ferrari 612 GTS Pavesi, another one-of Ferrari recently spotted at Ferrari’s factory in Maranello. For this version, the engine delivers an extra 20 HP and 12 NM of torque (it foes now to 550 HP and 600NM). Of course that for a lot of money (we do not know exactly how much). For the exterior the customer opted for a custom front bumper, a two tone silver/black paintjob, Tubi Style exhaust and a splitted carbon fiber removable roof. Great job!

Ferrari 458 Italia Spider and new 612 Scaglietti to be revealed in 2011

There’s a reason that Ferrari is a household name for any auto enthusiast, and the next couple of years will illustrate just what that reason is with new models just pouring out of the Italian sports car manufacturer.

The beginning of this liberation of models will be the successor for the current 612 Scaglietti. This successor will be unveiled in early 2011 at the Geneva Motor Show, with a Spider version for the Ferrari 458 Italia coming out later that year at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The long rumored successor for the Enzo supercar will arrive in early 2012, and the 599 GTB’s replacement, codenamed F152, will arrive in the second half of 2012.

The new 612 has been codenamed F151 and was already rumored to combine a V12 front engine that delivers a total of 550 HP with a 100-HP electric motor at the rear. The result will be a fuel consumption reduction of 35%. As for the 458 Italia Spider, it will feature the same folding hardtop as the California.

The one of a kind Ferrari 612 GTS

As the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti’s time in the sunshine comes to an end and while waiting for the new generation, Ferrari will be helping us pass the time with a few one-of-a-kind models. This Ferrari 612 GTS is one of them.

We only have a video of the car, but we presume it’s the result of Ferrari’s latest program that allows clients to create their own custom models straight from the factory in Maranello. It’s the same program that created the P540 Superfast Aperta in 2009.

A standard 612 Scaglietti is powered by a V12 engine producing 540 HP, but the GTS version has been packed with 550 HP and 600 NM of torque. There will only be one unit built in the world, which basically means someone with very deep pockets will be the one driving around town with this unique mechanical beauty.

Video: 2011 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti testing at Fiorano

A new Ferrari is prancing up the company’s Fiorano test circuit and, from the looks of this video, it just might be the new 2011 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti.

Nothing is imminent as far as when this car is going to be unveiled, but Ferrari has mentioned in the past that the new Scaglietti could find its way into dealerships sometime in the coming years, possibly even as early as 2012. We also know that the next generation 612 Scaglietti will come with a modified V12 engine with direct-injection, as well as a stripped down chassis that should make it lighter and give the new Scaglietti more speed than its predecessor.

There’s also word coming around that the new 612 could also use gasoline-hybrid technology, a system Ferrari developed from the KERS system it currently uses in Formula One race cars. With this technology, the new Scaglietti supercar would come with an electric motor, a dual-clutch 7-speed Formula One transmission, and a set of lithium-ion batteries that should provide fuel economy and reduce C02 emissions in the process, similar to the 599 GTB Fiorano HY-KERS concept the company unveiled earlier this year.

Next Ferrari 612 Scaglietti confirmed; it will go hybrid

Ferrari boss, Luca di Montezemolo, already informed us all of Ferrari’s intentions to go hybrid with the next Enzo, 599, and Scaglietti back in June during an interview with British magazine, Auto Express. And while, at the time, details were a little sketchy on what type of combination engine the Scaglietti would receive, things can be seen a lot clearer today.

The successor for the current 612 Scaglietti will be unveiled in March 2011 at the Geneva Motor Show and will come with a twelve-cylinder front engine that delivers a total of 550 HP with a 100-HP electric motor at the rear. The result will be a fuel consumption reduction of 35%.

On the exterior, the next 612 will be heavily inspired by the 458 Italia and the Vettura Laboratorio HY-KERS. The sports car will get a strong front, curved hood, and wider wheelbase. The Vettura Laboratorio concept combined a V12 engine with an 100 HP electric engine and a dual-clutch 7-speed F1 transmission.

Sales will begin in the summer of 2011, and prices are expected to be in the 300,000 euro area.
