Earlier this month, Ferrari ->ke252 filled some patent drawings revealing a new model that many people believed was the new Ferrari California->ke3183. On the same day, Ferrari also filed a patent for the new "SP FFX" name and an accompanying logo. These two occurrences on the same day lead us to believe that those patent drawings were, in fact, of the SP FFX.

First things first; why is it unlikely that these drawings are of the new California? Mainly because the car showed in the images featured Ferrari FF door mirrors, headlights, taillights and general proportions. These make us believe that we were actually looking at a special FF->ke3753 Coupe.

The SP FFX name is a little unclear, but we do know that SP stands for Special Projects. As for the "FFX;" that part makes it pretty clear that a special edition FF is on its way.

Updated 04/28/2014: More images of the upcoming SP FXX surfaced online today, revealing just how cool Ferrari's latest special project will look. We also got a few new details on the engine. (Carscoops)

Exterior

Interestingly enough, the Ferrari SP FFX, which turned out to be a bespoke, coupe version of the FF, showed up just as rumors regarding a production FF Coupe started to emerge. Being a special model tailored by Ferrari's Special Projects division, it's unlikely for the FFX's body to be transferred on the FF Coupe as is, but it's an interesting shape to start with.

First of all, the design team ditched the hatch and the rear seats of the FF, as requested by the unnamed Japanese client that commissioned it, but the modifications don't stop here. The vehicle was also given a special paint job, with the Rosso Corsa body complemented by a black roof and several Pearl White components, such as the pillars, side sills, mirrors, rear spoiler, rims and the center piece of the rear diffuser.

Additionally, both the front and the rear fenders gained the trademark Ferrari->ke252 gills seen on most of the company's models since the 1962 GTO.

Drivetrain

No changes were operated under the vehicle's long hood, meaning the owner will get to enjoy the same 651 horsepower and 503 pound-feel of torque available in the Ferrari FF. The output comes from a 6.3-liter, V-12 engine and goes to the wheels via a seven-speed, dual-clutch F1 transmission.

Speaking of the wheels, the SP FFX also retains the FF's four-wheel drive system (4RM), which is lighter than a conventional unit and comes into force only when the car is driven in certain modes.

Ferrari FF

The Ferrari FF was unveiled at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show and it is by far the strangest model offered by Ferrari in the past few years. The FF features a shooting brake-like body style, with a front end clearly inspired by the 458 Italia and a large rear hatch. It is the only model offered by Ferrari that can accommodate four passengers and their luggage.

Under the hood, the FF gets a 6.3 liter, V-12 engine that delivers an impressive 660 horsepower at 8,000 rpm and a peak torque of 503 lbs-ft 6,000 rpm. With this impressive power, the FF can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and up to a top speed of 208 mph.
