Carroll Shelby: The Life of a Legend

The name Carroll Shelby may not be quite as familiar to new automotive enthusiasts as it is for older generations, but his creations are no stranger to anyone that follows and loves performance automobiles. Mr. Shelby was not only a genius when it came to building high-performance American muscle, but he was also an accomplished racecar driver.

Carroll managed to parlay his racing roots into a partnership with Ford that spanned over 50 years. However, that partnership almost never happened, as his first choice in partners was Chevrolet. Imagine that, a “Shelby Camaro” or “Shelby Corvette,” it just doesn’t quite sound as good as "Shelby Mustang,” does it?

Carroll Shelby lived a full life, as he graced this world with 89 years of his presence and nearly 60 of those years he was providing us gearheads with examples of his automotive skill, be it winning races or designing hot rods. Carroll Shelby will be missed dearly by everyone in the automotive world, but we are not here to mourn the passing of this legend. Nope, we feel that the right way to send off this legend is by celebrating his long and legendary life.

Video: Man tries to lap Laguna Seca Raceway on two wheels

If we were writing about a motorcycle, then this story would not be as incredible as the one we are about to tell you, but James "Ski" Smith attempted to do something a little more extraordinary then hopping on a motorcycle for a fast lap. Smith flipped his Fox bodied Mustang up onto a 2 wheeled SKI and tried to complete a lap around the famous Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey California.

The first thing we have to mention is that no one should try this at home, or their local streets. It takes a tremendous amount of skill to drive a car on two wheels for that length of time and, to make his attempt even more difficult, James Smith had never actually been around the race course before this stunt. Imagine how difficult it was to go on a maiden lap on two wheels!

Check out the video to see what it’s like lapping Laguna Seca on two wheels with the use of the onboard camera and the view from the car alongside it! Enjoy!

New Shelby Supercharger kit adds 300 HP to your 2007-2012 GT500

The 2007 Shelby GT500 came out with a whopping total of 500 HP, before the power output jumped up to 540 HP in the 2010 model year. Both sets of numbers are rather significant, but with the 2013 Shelby GT500 pushing 650 HP upon its arrival, customers who own a 2007-2012 GT500 may feel as though they are at a disadvantage. Well, worry no more.

Shelby Performance Parts has announced a new supercharger kit for the 5.4-liter V8 engine that can add an impressive 300 HP to the GT500. This means, the total output can be increased to an amazing 840 HP!

The new kit will replace the stock roots-type supercharger and will add a new Competition Heat Exchanger and Shelby GT500 Competition Intercooler Tank to improve cooling performance. The new Competition Heat Exchanger will keep the intake charge cool, while the Competition Intercooler Tank can be filled with ice or dry ice to further reduce intake temperatures.

The bad part to all of this is that there are no pricing details associated with the package as of yet. We’re thinking an upgrade package of this caliber will run customers somewhere in the $5-6K area.

2013 Ford Mustang RTR by Vaughn Gittin Jr.

Back in 2009, racer and drifter extraordinaire Vaughn Gittin Jr. unveiled the Mustang RTR-C, a custom Mustang that came with a carbon fiber body and 550 horsepower hiding under its hood.

And now that the 2013 Ford Mustang has been unveiled, Gittin Jr. is back with the second-generation Mustang RTR. Details behind the project are still being kept tightly under wraps, but we do expect the muscle car to carry a similar design theme to the original carbon fiber-clad model.

What’s new for the 2013 Mustang RTR is that it will be made available on the Mustang V6 with an option to put a supercharger system to drive up the car’s performance credentials a few levels past the standard model. The only thing that was released were a couple of rendered photos of the 2013 Mustang RTR, which, judging by its look, is a barnburner of a project.

The RTR program is expected to be available as a turnkey tuning package, although we certainly hope that it’s going to be far less than the $135,000 price tag of its predecessor.

We’ll have more info on Vaughn Gittin’s 2013 Ford Mustang RTR project as soon as details become available.

2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

Chevrolet’s release of the all new Camaro ZL1 at the 2011 Chicago Auto Show allowed them to reignite the muscle car wars that have been burning up the automotive websites for a good and long time. But before Chevrolet can shout out "Checkmate," Ford has answered the ZL1 with an update car of their own: the 2013 Shelby GT500. Recent spy shots have revealed that the company is already testing the 2013MY GT500 and it will be more powerful than ever.

The Camaro ZL1’s LSA 6.2L supercharged V-8 engine producing an estimated 550 HP and 550 lb.-ft. of torque is nothing to shake a stick at, but Ford has one-upped them once again. The Eaton M112 supercharger that is being housed in the current GT500’s V8 engine will be replaced with the more-efficient and quieter TVS unit. The V8 engine found in the 2013 model will also get modified and bumped up to 5.8L, all while producing up to 650HP and making it the most powerful, factory made Mustang ever! The game continues...Your move Chevrolet.

UPDATE 03/16/2012: Ford has announced prices for the new 2013 Shelby GT500. The base price is $54,200, but if you want to add the SVT Performance Package, it jumps up by another $3,495. This package includes: Torsen limited-slip differential, 19" forged-aluminum front wheels or 20" forged-aluminum rear wheels, Bilstein adjustable dampers, unique rear springs, a unique instrument cluster, and an SVT gear shift knob. A glass roof will add yet another $1,995, while an electronic package adds another $2,340.

UPDATE 05/08/2012: Ford has unveiled a pretty cool commercial for the Shelby GT500. The idea behind the commercial is pretty simple: Everyone has an Inner Mustang. Unleash yours! Of course, you’ll have to wait until Summer 2012 when the Mustang goes on sale!

More details on the 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 after the jump.

2011 Ford Mustang 3.7L V6 Procharger by CFM Performance

The Ford Mustang 3.7 V6 doesn’t get as much love as its 5.0-liter counterpart, and for the most part, the less attention is warranted. But every so often, a V6 Mustang comes out of the woodwork and makes a name for itself.

One tuner that has found a soft spot for the V6 Mustang is ProCharger, which built a supercharger kit for the lesser ’Stang. The supercharger kit gave the Mustang a dramatic increase in output from the standard 305 horsepower and 280 lb/ft of torque all the way up to 475 horsepower from the muscle car’s 3.6-liter V6 engine.

Taking that one step further is Central Florida Motorsports, which fitted ProCharger’s supercharger kit on the Mustang and proceeded to smash the existing quarter-mile record - one that it already owned - for a 2011+ Mustang V6, covering the distance in just 11.20 seconds at 119 mph.

Check out the video posted by Central Florida Motorsports of their Mustang V6 and watch how it annihilates the quarter-mile strip.

2012 Ford Mustang Brenspeed 650R Roush Supercharger Package

Back in 2010, Roush unveiled a pretty impressive upgrade package for the 2011 Mustang GT 5.0 that increased the total output from the standard 412 HP to a monstrous 550 HP with more than 470 lb.-ft. of torque. It was a pretty amazing update, but the Indiana-based Brenspeed tuner decided it could get even better. The best part is that this update can also be applied to the 2013 Mustang models.

Roush’s new performance package based on the Roush TVS supercharger system develops a total output of an even more impressive 650 HP and 585 lb-f torque. In order to obtain this increase, the Brenspeed package includes a high-flow fuel rail with 47-lb fuel injectors, a twin 60mm throttle body, an air-to-water intercooler system, a low restriction air induction system, fuel system upgrade, colder spark plugs, and more.

Hit the jump for a full list of updates offered in the Ford Mustang Brenspeed 650R Roush Supercharger.

2013 Ford Shelby GT500 officially rated at 662 HP

When Ford unveiled the 2013 GT500 at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show, they announced that the car’s new 5.8-liter supercharged V8 engine would deliver about 650 HP, an impressive increase over the previous 550 HP. Well, hold on to your coffee, folks, because the news just got even better. Ford has confirmed that the GT500 has been officially SAE-certified as the most powerful series production V8 in the world with peak output of 662 HP and 631 lb-ft of torque. Take that, Chevrolet and your baby 550 HP ZL1!

This new V8 engine is backed by a chassis that has also been tuned to absorb the road imperfections that can cause instability at high speeds. These changes assist the GT500 in achieving speeds of 200 mph and beyond. The 2013 GT500 also offers an improved fuel consumption with an EPA-estimated 15 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 18 mpg combined with no gas guzzler tax.

As an extra bonus, we have a series of "spy shots" for you showing the car in action at the Nurburgring. Enjoy!
