The Ford Puma was a very successful European model built between 1997 and 2001. It was a front engine, front wheel drive, 3-door coupe that delivered between 90 and 153 HP depending on the trim level. Inspired by the huge success of the Fiesta, Ford decided that small cars are once again desirable and will bring the Puma name back into their lineup. It’s true that by the time the new Puma hits the market sometime in 2011, the compact car will face strong competition from small vehicles that are already on the market like the: Honda CR-X, Hyundai Veloster, Volkswagen Polo Coupe and many more.

The Puma’s design will be inspired by the new Fiesta, featuring a large trapezoidal grille and raked back headlamps at the front and sporty driving lights and a lower front bumper splitter. Under the hood Ford will use the same engine that is found in the Fiesta, a 95 HP 1.4 Liter gasoline unit for the base model along with a 118 HP 1.6 Liter power plant. Future Pumas will also be diesel equipped, thanks to the 1.4 Liter and 1.6 Liter TDCi alternatively fueled power plants. Ford’s new line of four cylinder EcoBoost direct injection turbocharged engines will also be available in the compact vehicle. The Puma will sprint from 0 to 60 MPH in about 6 seconds and reach a top speed of around 140 MPH.

The Ford Puma is not the prettiest coupé you can buy, nor the most powerful. And the fact that it sits on Fiesta underpinnings does not sound glamorous. But get behind the wheel, find a twisty road, and few cars give you as much fun for your money, thanks to an agile chassis, precise steering and sharp suspension.
