2012 Ford Mustang GT 5.0

  Review

Until now, we have only had details on the 2012 Mustang Boss 302 and the 2012 Mustang Shelby GT500. We think it’s high time we find out what the 2012 model year will bring for the Mustang GT 5.0.

A leaked ordering guide suggests that the 2012 GT 5.0 will carry over mostly unchanged, with just a few tricks made in order to keep the car fresh. The list of new options include a new exterior color Lava Red Metallic that replaces the current Sterling Gray Metallic. The list of new options include selectable effort electric power assist steering (EPAS), sun visors with a multi purpose storage system, and illuminated vanity mirrors.

Everything under the hood remains unchanged. Customers will get the same 302 cubic inch 32 valve V8 that puts out 412 HP and 390 lb-ft of torque while returning a very economical 25 MPG on the highway.

Hit the jump to read more about the 2012 Ford Mustang GT 5.0.

Exterior and Interior

The 2012 Mustang GT 5.0 will look unchanged for 2012. It will be distinguished by the other Mustangs in the line-up by a dark chrome pony in the grille, dual bright rolled exhaust tips, LED sequential tail lamps a rear spoiler, and 18 x8" Wide Spoke Painted Aluminum Wheels. The interior gets bucket sport seats and different chrome accents.

The Mustang GT 5.0 will also get a new exterior color (Lava Red Metallic) that replaces the current Sterling Gray Metallic. The list of new options include selectable effort electric power assist steering (EPAS), sun visors with a multi purpose storage system, and illuminated vanity mirrors.

The Engine

Under the hood there will be the same 302 cubic inch 32 valve V8 that makes 412 HP and 390 lb-ft of torque while returning a very economical 25 MPG on the highway. The engine is mated to a standard 6-speed manual, but also a 6-speed automatic is offered as an option.

The Competition

The most obvious competitor for the Mustang GT 5.0 is the Chevrolet Camaro SS. Like the GT 5.0, the Camaro SS is powered by a powerful 6.2L V-8 engine with an output of 422 HP. With 10 extra horsepower, the Camaro seems have a slight advantage over the Mustang, but with the right driver, that won’t amount to much. Plus the Mustang GT 5.0 handles better, looks better, and has better quality material. Oh, and we can’t forget about the fact that it is also cheaper.

When Can I Buy One?

Expect the 2012 Mustang GT 5.0 to make debut in early 2011 with sales to begin shortly after. Pricing for the car will come with a $500 discount from the previous year’s model. This year, the 2012 model will come with a $29,995 price tag, falling under the $30,000 mark. Unfortunately, the Premium GT model will see a price increase of $200 from the previous year, which isn’t all that high, while the Premium GT Convertible will also carry a $700 increase from last year’s model.

well i gotta say ford has done a great job on this one,its not underpowered like the previous ones were,it is fun to drive, gets 29.4 miles to gallon on freeway with cruise set at 70mph suppose a little more would be possible at 60mph ,i have had mine for a month now and it has added the fun back into driving for me,its very quick, very fast and fun,now let me say to all you green [does that mean with envy]gas savers on here it is not a guzzler as a matter of fact it only gets 1.7 miles to the gallon less than my kia soul and better than my toyota truck, drive one and it will change your mind and add the fun of driving back into your lives.jplp

The Mustang is actually doing pretty well when it comes to sales, looking back the current body style debuted in 2005, Ford sold nearly 170,000 of them that year, in 2006 Ford sold nearly 180,000. The Camaro for all it’s "success" will require nearly 6 years at it’s current rate to sell as many units as Ford sold in it’s first 2 years. The fact is there are a lot more used Mustangs out there for people to buy. If you actually included the total # of Mustangs sold new and used, the Mustang is outselling the Camaro 4:1.

getting bored with the look of Mustang! I could definitely point out the bad things about the Mustang but I will not waste my time to do so. It’s much better if Ford killed this model and come up with a new one!

Finally the 5.0 is back. It only took what 20 years or so?Ford has really improved the mechanical of the Mustang. It has to, its sales are really suffering in comparison to the Camaro which has been a hit. I don’t think Ford completely understands the equation here though.

As far as the Mustang being horribly impractical as a everyday driver I have lived with a 99 Mustang GT for the past 11 years and it is a great everyday Practically every other car I get in and drive leaves me wishing I was back in my Stang. The refined newer models are on par with luxury cars of only a few years ago as far as ride and noise go.

It’s not there for bling, this is not a street legal car. If you want the road legal version of it look up Boss 302, not 302S.

Tight turns at the speeds these cars enter them at will send the cars practically airborne without proper equipment including that large spoiler.

It should be noted that the lap time comparison allegedly took place between a Mustang wearing R-compound rubber and an M3 on street tires.

Ford’s performance claims for the 2012 Boss 302 include cornering capability in excess of 1.0 g, shorter stopping distances than provided by the GT—even with its available brake upgrade—and a 155-mph top speed.

Yes, and you can clearly understand I meant the bottom lining of them without knowing the actual term. When the V6 mustang looks much more aggressive and sporty than the GT, something’s wrong.
