Believe it or not, heavy-duty trucks play in a highly competitive segment with businesses and tradesmen looking to buy the best truck with the highest towing and hauling capacities while still being coddled in a comfortable and stylish cabin full of useful technology.

Though it’s highly competitive, there are only three true players: the Chevrolet 3500 , the Ford F-450/F-550 and the Ram 4500/5500. Each truck has its strong suits and all do a darn good job of moving heavy stuff around, but the current standout in the segment is indubitably the Ram. Offering more options and ways to customize its trucks, the Ram caters more to those looking to build the exact truck to fit a specialized need.

Power comes from two iconic names in the industry, HEMI and Cummins. HEMI might be more associated with the high-horsepower performance crowd, but Chrysler ’s 6.4-liter HEMI as recently made its appearance in the heavy-duty truck segment. It’s high torque output combined with its variable valve timing and cylinder deactivation make it a great alternative to the more expensive diesel. However, when the loads are heavy, the Cummins is the engine to have. Generating an enormous 750 pound-feet of torque, the Ram 5500 can pull a massive 29,600-pound trailer with ease.

Moving heavy stuff around is important, but getting people to and from the job site is equally so. The Ram Chassis Cab’s interior is a basic carbon copy of the near-luxurious cabin of the Ram 1500 Ram 1500 , 2500, and 3500 trucks. Uconnect, a 7-inch TFT display, and navigation are just a few amenities the Ram boasts – and they can be had inside a truck that’s fitted with a dump bed.

BMW 4 Series Coupe

Every year, hundreds of motoring journalists from all over the world descend upon New York City for the New York International Auto Show . Among the new car reveals, fancy parties and exciting concepts, the New York Auto Show also plays host to the World Car of the Year Awards.

This prestigious award is handed out by a collection of experienced automotive journalists from around the world. Some of this year’s jurors include writers from countries like Japan, Russia, South Africa, China, Australia and more. Overall there are nearly 70 jurors in total.

Some of the previous year’s winners include the Mk VII Volkswagen Golf and the Nissan Leaf .

Of all the cars that were eligible for this year’s award, twelve have been selected as finalists. We have brought together all twelve of the final candidates for you here, and we also included a little bit information about each one.

Ford has pulled the covers off its newest, full-size, and only body-on-frame SUV today, the 2015 Ford Expedition. Still in its third generation, the Expedition gets a much-needed makeover that includes many of the designs and features its cousin, the Lincoln Navigator received just months prior.

Much has changed to better the Expedition and help with fuel economy and drivability, but much remains the same or carryover from the previous year. The biggest news under its resculpted hood is the addition of Ford’s bread-n-butter 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6. Gone is the old 5.4-liter Triton V-8, leaving the EcoBoost as the Expedition’s only powerplant. Both the standard and EL, or extended length versions return with seating for five and eight passengers in high-riding comfort.

Speaking of comfort, Ford is bringing its popular, top-of-the-line Platinum series to the Expedition. The trim level ranks above the western-style King Ranch that previously held the top spot. Like the F-150s, the Platinum series will focus more on modern luxury with a clean, non-themed design aimed at more the ‘city folk’ type. MyFord Touch, SYNC, push-button start, blind sport warning, and even the F-150’s “Truck Apps” will be available.

Also new is Ford’s first-ever attempt at a continuously controlled damping suspension system. It features three driver-selectable drive modes that tailor the ride style to changing conditions. It’s designed to manage body motion, steering feedback, and unevenness in the road. Helping the system out is Ford’s new electric power-assisted steering. That system is said to improve maneuverability at low speeds and provide more feel at higher speeds. It will ever automatically compensate for heavy cross winds and road crowns.

Land Rover Range Rover Sport

In 2013, Land Rover introduced a totally new generation of its flagship Range Rover and Range Rover Sport SUVs. The brand is known to produce some of the finest premium off-road luxury vehicles in the world and it did not come as a surprise to us when the world bestowed it with praise, as has been the case with Land Rovers historically.

Yes, the Range Rover has grown into a mature off-road vehicle and is in league of its own, when it comes to luxury motoring. While, the Range Rover sits at the top of the food chain, its smaller sibling, the Range Rover Sport , has had its fair share of successes. MotorTrend magazine honored the RR Sport with the coveted ’SUV of the Year’ and now Four Wheeler Magazine has awarded the Range Rover Sport with "Four Wheeler of the Year" for 2013.

This is the third time a Land Rover SUV has won this award after intense and grueling testing both on tarmac and on rugged terrain designed to test the off-road capabilities of the vehicle.

"It is a great achievement for the very luxurious and performance oriented Range Rover Sport to be named ’Four Wheeler of the Year,’ by the country’s oldest four-wheel drive enthusiast publication," said Kim McCullough, Brand Vice President, Land Rover North America.

How often do you get to experience a super fast luxury station wagon doing insane speeds on test bowl or even a twisty, complicated and undulating test track? Audi UK recently ran a campaign where guests were invited to experience Audi’s ’S’ and ’RS’ range of premium sports cars .

Millbrook proving grounds is a purpose-built test facility in Bedfordshire, England. It includes a high-speed bowl where the cars can be maxed, plus a twisty Alpine test course with elevation changes and tight bends. The Alpine course was designed to mimic actual mountain roads where the car’s high speed handling and stability are pushed to the limit.

Guests got a chance to ride alongside a seasoned driver and experience the limits of the cars. The new Audi RS6 Avant was the star of the show, much to the surprise of just about no one. Despite its immense size and weight, the RS6 was pretty quick around the Alpine track, and on the high-speed bowl, the RS6 hit speeds in excess of 170 mph.

It is a well-known fact that cars like the BMW M3 and the larger M5 are so perfect that they are nearly impossible to make any better. That’s about as perfect a sports sedan can be. You could toss in a custom cat-back exhaust, new mufflers and larger wheels and that is about it. Going any further with engine mods will ruin the fun of owning a BMW M-series.

You can, however, add on an aftermarket body kit, if you like, and give the M5 a little extra style.

Vorsteiner, a California-based tuner, has an upgrade kit that can help make your M5 stand out. The company has just released aero mods for the 2014 BMW M5 . The kit includes a front carbon-fiber spoiler and a rear diffuser both of which are cured in an Autoclave for increased strength and durability. The carbon-fiber composites are treated with a four-stage, UV-inhibiting clear lacquer coating.

Vorsteiner also offers unique 19-, 20-, 21- or 22-inch wheels with widths ranging from 8.5 to 13 inches, and a cat-back exhaust for the F10 BMW M5. You also get a couple of Vorsteiner badges and other minor exterior modifications.

Aside from the cat-back exhaust, there are no other engine mods to speak of on this Vorsteiner-modified M5.

How often do you think, the 2014 Chevrolet SS does not produce enough power? Apparently, it is a performance sedan with over 400 horsepower crammed into its engine bay and still, it isn’t enough for many motorheads. More is always better and in the case of the Chevrolet SS and its V-8 powerplant, there’s even more to be had than just 415 horsepower.

Callaway was first to come forward to inject some pop into the 6.2-liter, V-8 engine with a nice tuning package. With it, the Chevrolet SS pumped out 570 horsepower and 535 pound-feet of torque. Now, that’s what you call a performance sedan. At least, Callaway seems satisfied with the output.

Our friends from Texas aren’t far behind either. Hennessey Performance has put up a teaser video of what we could expect form the world-famous tuning house. The video shows a base-line dyno run of the 2014 Chevrolet SS sedan. On the dyno, the SS clocks 359 horsepower at the wheel and 367 pound-feet in factory-spec, which seems about right.

Although, information about the Hennessey-tuned Chevrolet SS is scarce, we believe Hennessey could be aiming for an output figure of around 600 horsepower. This may be slightly more than the Callaway SS, giving Hennessey a slight lead in tuning the next great Chevrolet sedan .

Phew, let’s take a short break from all of the SEMA craziness to focus on another important auto show: the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show.

This is where Acura will debut a Sport Hybrid version of the 2014 RLX sedan . The new RLX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD will hit showrooms in 2014, and Acura will release prices soon.

The model will boast Acura’s Hybrid SH-AWD powertrain that helps the flagship pound out V-8 performance and deliver the fuel economy of a four-pot. This SH-AWD system combines a 3.5-liter, i-VTEC V-6 engine with three electric motors and a seven-cog, dual-clutch auto transmission to deliver an outstanding 377 horsepower. Thanks to its amazing output and all-wheel-drive system, this new model promises to deliver "outstanding handling and all-weather performance capabilities."

On top of the nearly 400 ponies, this RLX Sport Hybrid delivers a combined fuel economy of 30 mpg.

No other details were offered on this RLX SH, but the first image reveals that it will look nearly identical to the standard version. We’re sure there will be a few differences that Acura will reveal at a later date, but we only have one image to go off of for now.

The Buick LaCrosse is fresh for 2014 with a variety of improvements in almost every area, but with pricing that holds the base line at $34,000.

The outside is sharper than before with LED and bi-xenon lighting up front, while new LED styles for the brake lights come in out back.

Inside, everything takes a step toward classier finishes and surfaces, while tech integration for the touchscreen infotainment and active safety is now one of the best from any luxury brand.

Larger wheels all around are a LaCrosse feature for 2014 as well, but the most notable improvements to this smooth full-size sedan really come from its manners on the road.

A far stiffer chassis than ever before is married to the traditional Buick attributes of smooth, quiet and safe cruising. The increased rigidity for the platform brings only benefits, including a ride that is just as cozy as before in standard settings, but with a firmer ride selectable electronically, as well, for windy mountain roads.

During its stay here at the TopSpeed Garage, the LaCrosse’s benefits were clear from the moment we sat in its huge leather chairs.

Our tester was the 304-horsepower, V-6 model, but almost all of the new tech and other updates also apply across the new-for-2014 eAssist hybrid model at the base side of the price range.

For this much roominess and comfort, the only other contenders in the Buick ’s $35,000 to $45,000 segment are the revised Lincoln MKZ or the smaller Audi A6 .

Compressed Natural Gas has never gained traction in retail-aimed vehicles, but for large fleet companies and government municipalities, CNG makes a lot of sense.

It is cheaper, easier to transport, and far cleaner than any gasoline and even EV cars that fill their batteries with coal-fired electricity.

Amid a flurry of other green and eco messages touting GM’s improving eco-friendly manufacturing, General Motors CEO Dan Akerson also announced on Wednesday that Chevrolet will be offering the all-new Impala sedan with CNG capabilities.

General Motors is expecting slow initial sales of around 750 to 1,000 units during the first year, but expects the marketplace to become more open to CNG-powered vehicles as time goes by.

There is no word yet on pricing, but other CNG vehicles see an additional $7,500 to $9,500 in costs over its gasoline-powered counterpart.

The move to offer a fleet-targeted CNG Impala an interesting one as GM has tirelessly worked to reposition the more upscale 2014 Impala far away from the mass-production, cash-only/rental-car feel the previous generation of Impalas suffered from. However, the new Impala does offer fleet customers more room and refinement than other vehicles in that market segment.
