  Future cars in the making. Should they be an innocent drawing, a fine computer rendering or real driving concept, they always preview the cars of the future in some aspects.

This partnership between Azfal Kahn and Ant Anstead just might be on to something. The collaboration between these two industry savants has paved the way for the creation of two new models, one of which is the Ant-Kahn Flying Huntsman. Unlike the Evanta Barchetta , the Flying Huntsman is based on an actual vehicle that Kahn Design knows a great deal about: the Land Rover Defender . But this isn’t just a simple tuning project for the Defender. The Flying Huntsman is being prepared as a completely new model that will have a more aesthetically pleasing identity than the utilitarian looks of the Defender.

The Flying Huntsman will carry a "long-nose" front section, which essentially means that it’s going to be a little longer than the standard Defender, thanks to the extra 400 mm (15.7 inches) of bodywork attached into the nose. That makes the Flying Huntsman look more sophisticated and dare I say, more aesthetically balanced than anything we’ve seen from the Defender.

Under its hood, the Flying Huntsman is powered by a GM -sourced, 6.2-liter, V-8, LS3 engine that produces 550 horsepower — far and away more powerful than anything a standard Defender was capable of.

The Ant-Kahn Flying Huntsman is still in its development stages so there should be more details about this vehicle once the first prototype is completed. The early information, though, has been pretty impressive.

Audi has been working on a facelift for the A1 for almost a year now, and it appears the revised hatchback is almost ready to make its public debut. Our spy photographers caught the supermini on the move somewhere in Southern Europe, where the Germans are testing the final tweaks operated on the vehicle’s drivetrain and chassis.

Although the A1 is still hidden under swirly camouflage, most of its visual updates are obvious and it seems we’re looking at the milder version of the hotter S1 . Our paparazzi weren’t able to take a peek inside, but don’t expect to see major improvements in that department save for some additional trim options and maybe a slightly revised center console.

Same goes for the engine lineup, which will mostly remain unchanged, with only minor improvements as far as power, fuel efficiency, and CO2 emissions go. Expect it to arrive with the same 1.2-liter TFSI, 1.4-liter TFSI, and 2.0-liter TDI in showrooms, although the range-topping version might carry a turbo 1.8-liter with 192 horsepower under its hood. We will find out more about that when the 2014 Paris Motor Show kicks off in October.

The Tesla Model X is reportedly about to enter production in late 2014. Finally, right? It’s been a long time coming for the company’s second large-scale production vehicle. The lengthy delays the Model X has suffered from has made us even more interested to see what the production version is going to look like. But Tesla is now accepting reservations for the Model X and has said that deliveries are expected to begin in the fall of next year. Do a little calculating and it does look like those initial reports of production beginning early next year are all true.

This is huge news, especially for those clamoring for Tesla to finally build the Model X after years of testing and development. We’re a part of that group, too, and like everybody else, we’re very interested to see whether the production Model X will mirror the concept, or go in a more conservative direction.

Get out your salt shakers friends, we have a big bowl of rumor soup that needs some seasoning. Autocar is reporting that Porsche is readying a mid-engined coupe, codenamed 988, with a flat-eight engine as a direct competitor to the Ferrari 458 and Lamborghini Huracan . Autocar is claiming that with the power output of the current flat-six reaching its theoretical maximum, Porsche needs to look to more cylinders to keep pushing performance. With Porsche already using eight cylinders to power its new range topping 918, there is some credence to this claim.

The move makes a certain level of sense. With the 918 being a limited production model that is more a science experiment than a viable long-term model, Porsche will be looking to fill the gap with something that is cheaper to produce. This new model is expected to birth an entirely new era at Porsche with an all-new platform and a new engine architecture that will expand to every mid- and rear-engine car the company makes.

If the claims about this new super Porsche hold true, the world of sports cars is about to get a lot better.

The Porsche Boxster was introduced in 1996 as an entry-level, mid-engined sports car . It was Porsche’s first road-going roadster since the 550 Spyder, which was discontinued in 1956, and it didn’t receive an S version until 2000. Although it was received with mild criticism and seen as a departure from Porsche tradition, the Boxster quickly grew on enthusiasts to become the company’s biggest volume seller until the Cayenne SUV was launched in 2003. Initially motivated by a 2.5-liter, flat-six engine, the Boxster started receiving larger, 2.7-liter and 3.2-liter units later in its life. By 2005, a second-generation model had already been introduced and powerplants were upgraded to 2.9-liter and 3.4 liter flat-six mills. The third-gen Boxster (981) arrived for the 2013 model year with extensive visual updates, uprated engines and a brand-new GTS version scheduled for 2015. As we move into the 2016 model year, the Germans are rolling out a mid-cycle refresh for the Boxster, one that follows into the footsteps of the 911 and possibly welcomes an all-new engine to the lineup.

Confirmed since April 2013, and spotted testing in Germany and Sweden several times since then, the upcoming Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake has hit the Nurburgring track. Still wearing a camouflaged rear end, the shooting brake was caught while being pushed to the limit on the iconic German track. Mercedes engineers are looking to wrap things up before the assembly line fires up, and, as things stand, the sexy compact is quite the nimble machine.

Derived from the CLA — the most aerodynamic vehicle in its class — the CLA Shooting Brake not only inherits the sedan ’s sleek appearance and low drag coefficient, but it looks like it’s getting all the driving dynamics that come with the Mercedes-Benz badge. It’s fast, cuts corners like a sports car and remains planted at high speeds. Granted, this is what customers expect to receive when buying an aerodynamic shooting brake, and the Germans are making sure no one will be disappointed.

The Alfa Romeo 4C has just barely become available to buy here in the States, but the masterminds in Italy are already working on the next big thing. According to Car and Driver that next big thing is squeezing even more power from the car’s 1.8-liter engine. In a conversation with Fiat ’s R&D chief Harald Wester, he told C&D that “We are only at 136 horsepower per liter, so there is space.” But don’t look for a manual transmission any time in the future.

With the car ’s carbon-fiber tub, Wester doesn’t worry about chassis stiffness, saying the most needed change to handle the increased power would be larger brakes.

While the potential for more power is exciting, Wester did bring some bad news as well; there will basically never be a manual transmission. This is due to the unique design of the car’s carbon-fiber monocoque construction. Wester said, “It messes up the entire architecture, and it would ruin the monocoque.”

Ouch.

Regardless, I have yet to hear anything but raving about the 4C’s performance, and giving just a little extra boost in the horsepower department should make for an even more entertaining ride.

The relaunch of Maybach apparently isn’t going to be limited to just super-luxury sedans. From the looks of it, Mercedes is planning to set Maybach up as a luxury division similar to how AMG has evolved into the company’s performance division. So prepare yourselves for a more versatile Maybach offering that will even expand into SUVs like the GL-Class.

The news comes by way of Motoring, which reported that Mercedes is already tinkering the idea of using Maybach differently when compared to its previous incarnation. So instead of models being badged as an independent Maybach brand, we could see something akin to Mercedes models being treated to uber-luxurious specifications.

Motoring is reporting that the GL-Class will be the first of Mercedes’ existing models to be given the Maybach treatment. The move is seen by some as the company’s response to the increasing number of luxury SUVs that are either in development or are in discussions to be developed soon.

You hear that Bentley , and Rolls-Royce ? That’s Mercedes putting you on notice.

Is it possible that the Hyundai Veloster ’s run ends after only three years of production? Hyundai has made no indication on an answer to that question, but according to GoAuto, there has been a lot of internal debate on whether the Veloster lives to fight another generation or concludes a short-lived run after the facelifted model arrives in 2015 or 2016.

It’s a surprising development for a car whose sales numbers haven’t exactly caught fire. But the Veloster has developed a unique following among fans of the sports hatch , many of whom have come to love the vehicle and treated it as an outlier model of a company known for its high-volume models.

A Hyundai executive told GoAuto that no decision has been made as of yet and there are still enough influential voices on both sides to warrant more time to debate the Veloster’s fate.

For now, a facelifted model is in the pipeline with Hyundai planning to adapt its current design language on the sports hatchback . If sales pick up on this model, then that could help Hyundai keep the Veloster around. But the fact that discussions are taking place on the sports hatch’s fate is a little disconcerting, especially for those like us who have grown quite fondly of Hyundai’s little pocket rocket.

British automaker MG is planning to release a successor to the TF two-seat sports car. It won’t happen right away, possibly not even until the end of the decade, but company execs have already discussed the possibility of its return.

Auto Express is reporting that MG executives have not made any concrete plans on the TF’s successor, but did say that steps will be taken as soon as the company successfully transitions under its new owners, China’s SAIC.

Fans of the TF will be happy about this development. We haven’t seen the TF since MG ended production of the sports roadster in 2011. If the estimated timeline is accurate, 2018 or 2019 are likely the safest bets that we see the TF’s successor make its arrival.

That’s admittedly a long way from now, which is a little disappointing. For now, the company is focused on building a pair of new vehicle architectures that will be used on other models, including a CS Concept -based SUV and an MG5 that the company plans to put against the Ford Focus . At least one of those models is slated for a 2015 release.

There’s clearly a lot of moving pieces going on within MG these days. Being under SAIC ownership has helped in that regard, allowing the British automaker to begin its return to relevancy.

This talked-about two-seater sports car may still be years away from being launched. But the mere mention of serious discussions taking place has us hopeful of an automotive future that has MG in it.
