An exciting M Performance Edition of the new BMW X4 is headed our way for the 2016 model year. Likely to be named the X4 M40i, and expected to offer an increase of at least 60 horsepower, courtesy of an official, M-branded S55 engine, along with suspension, brake, and styling tweaks, the M Performance upgrade will elevate an already sporty driving experience to an even higher level.

The M Performance package is already a smashing hit with the new 2 Series, and if the exciting ,new M235i — acclaimed by many to be the best-driving BMW in a decade — is any indication of just how fun to drive these tweaked models are, expect nothing less from the M Performance upgrade slated for the 2016 BMW X4.

The new BMW X4 is basically a trendy, four-door-coupe version of the hot-selling X3 crossover. Touted as a "Sports Activity Coupe," this design somewhat limits headroom and overall interior space, but the flip-side of this compromise is a much sleeker design.

Good looks and additional street presence are justifiable price premiums, and BMW wants $6,000 more than the base price of an X3 for the sharper-looking design. Based on the X6’s success, which is a similar coupe-like approach based on the X5 , we see no reason why fanatics won’t be lining up to purchase X4s in droves.

Now that the third-generation Audi TT — due 2016 in the United States — has been unveiled, the Germans are busy working on more powerful iterations of the small coupe. The TTS, which shares a 310-pony, 2.0-liter turbo with the Audi S3 , is already underway with Nurburgring testing having commenced in May 2014. Now, Audi is upping the ante with the range-topping TT-RS model, which showed up on the "Green Hell" wearing a TTS disguise.

How can we tell this is a TT-RS mule and not the TTS we saw earlier in 2014? Well, that’s quite simple. The main clue is that the coupe’s exhaust note indicates the presence of a 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine under the hood. The super-powerful five-pot is reserved for vehicles such as the TT-RS and the RS3 , while the Audi TTS, whose body was bolted onto the mule’s chassis, is motivated by a turbocharged, 2.0-liter four-banger.

Yes, the next-generation TT-RS gets to keep its five-cylinder engine, but not without the mandatory upgrades that come with each new iteration. Expect output to increase to around 375 horsepower, 20 ponies more than the previous model, and 0-to-60 mph times to drop to four seconds, if not 3.9. Routing the power to all four wheels will be the same seven-speed, twin-clutch transmission. We figure fuel consumption will remain unchanged due to updated internals and a slightly lighter vehicle. The previous TT-RS returned 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway, so expect to get the same deal.

Drivetrain aside, the TT-RS is also in for a redesigned body and interior, in line with the new-generation TT. The high-performance coupe will be unveiled by the of 2015 and go on sale for the 2016 model year. In the meantime, hit play to watch the TT-RS lap the Nurburgring track for the first time.

Honda introduced the CR-V in 1995. The crossover was based on the Honda Civic and came with front-wheel or all-wheel drive. Built until 2001, the first-gen CR-V came to the United States in 1997 and had a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine rated at 126 horsepower. A 1999 facelift saw power increase to 147 ponies, as Honda responded to criticism that the crossover was underpowered. The second-gen model arrived in 2001 with extensive visual and technology upgrades. Three new engines were introduced, including a 2.4-liter inline-four. The CR-V was redesigned yet again for the 2007 model year, when production of the crossover began at the company’s new East Liberty, Ohio plant. The fourth-gen CR-V debuted at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show and went on sale for 2012. In 2014, the vehicle is powered by a 2.4-liter, four-banger producing 185 horsepower and 163 pound-feet of torque. As we move into 2015, the current CR-V is getting ready to receive a facelift, which will arrive in dealerships for the 2016 model year.

Revised front and rear fascia, an updated interior and an enhanced engine are the main feats surrounding this mid-cycle upgrade.

Mitsubishi introduced the Outlander in 2001 as a midsize crossover based on the ASX concept. Initially known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek on the Japanese market, the first-gen Outlander was powered by a range of 2.0-liter and 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engines mated to four- and five-speed manual and automatic transmissions. The vehicle was launched in the United States in 2003 as a replacement for the Montero Sport. The second-gen Outlander arrived in 2005. The redesigned shell came with new engines, new gearboxes and new safety features. For the first time, the crossover gained a 3.0-liter V-6 and a six-speed, twin-clutch transmission. A 2009 facelift added the Lancer’s front end to the Outlander. The second-gen model was replaced altogether for the 2013 model year, when major visual and drivetrain updates were operated. More importantly, the Outlander became available as a plug-in hybrid under the P-HEV moniker. As we move into the 2015 model year, Mitsubishi is readying the first mid-cycle refresh for its successful crossover.

The facelift comes as a last hurrah for the third-generation Outlander, which is scheduled to be replaced by a brand-new vehicle in 2017. To keep it fresh in a segment attended by many manufacturers, the Japanese automaker is refining the vehicle’s exterior looks, while upgrading the interior and the powertrains.

The current BMW 6 Series is a hot commodity. With three different models — the two-door coupe, GranCoupe with four doors, and convertible version — BMW offers plenty of choices for consumers looking to drop some considerable change for this sporty, luxurious car. Engine offerings start with a 3.0-liter, 315-horsepower, twin-scroll turbocharged inline-six, dubbed the 640i. Next up is the 650i, with a 4.4-liter V-8, also featuring a twin-scroll turbo design, which is good for 445 horsepower. The mighty M6 Convertible comes with a more powerful version of the 650i’s V-8, producing an almost-crazy 560 horsepower. Performance is blistering, regardless of engine choice, and typical BMW luxury and top-notch fit and finish adorn the interior.

While the current 6 Series Convertible is certainly fresh, this isn’t stopping BMW from updating the lineup for the 2016 model year, and our spy photographers caught this facelifted model out testing.

Ferrari is constantly on the forefront of automotive technology and setting the bar for the rest of the car world. For instance, with the Ferrari FF , the Italian automaker wanted a four-wheel-drive system but conventional systems weren’t good enough so its engineers completely reinvented the wheel and came up with their own. Was it necessary? No, probably not, but stagnation is self-abdication. At least that’s what Ferrari would say. Well Ferrari has done it again, at least it’s trying to. To Ferrari, a conventional electric power steering system just isn’t good enough. Even though any enthusiast lucky enough to drive a 458 Speciale would tell you that the steering is nothing short of perfect, Ferrari isn’t satisfied. Ferrari says that due to slack in the steering box and universal joints creating a slight delay between the driver’s input and what the wheels actually do, the wizards in Maranello are developing a software system that compensates for this and creates a more direct and accurate response. It, supposedly, can also compensate for the front suspension geometry differences, from left to right, which can create a miniscule difference in steering response respectively.

Now this is all well and good, but if Ferrari really wanted precise, accurate steering, why not just go back to hydraulic? Aren’t old school Ferraris, Porsches and BMWs world famous for their telepathic steering feel and response? I know, electric power steering is more efficient and with strict fuel-economy regulations, it makes more sense. But, what about no power steering at all? Ferrari’s baby brother, Alfa Romeo , doesn’t use power steering in its new 4C, and people love it.

Thankfully, Ferrari says that this new software tweak is simple and cheap, and the driver will never notice it working, they will only feel great steering. I understand Ferrari’s need to push the envelope but I feel this is just too much. Added software manipulation cannot be good for the already fading steering feel in sports cars nowadays.

BMW is only two short years away from celebrating its 100th year in business, and speculation around how the German automaker will celebrate is starting to grow. One heavily speculated party place is within the BMW i division. A conversation between BMW’s senior spokesman Kai Lichte and Motoring.com.au shed just a little more light on the upcoming situation. Plans for a more powerful version of the i8, the i9 , are rumored to already be in the works. Also on the table is the i5 , an all-new i vehicle loosely described as a stretched i3. Lichte’s answer to Motoring’s query is somewhat vague. “in two years’ time, maybe we will have some surprises for our anniversary,” he says. “There are a lot of discussions and a lot of ideas for this special occasion.”

Since the i9 is based on the current i8 , it’s likely it will see production first. The i9 will basically swap out the i8’s inline three-cylinder for a more potent 3.0-liter, turbocharged, inline six-cylinder, elevating it to near-supercar levels of performance. It would also serve as a modern-day interpretation of the iconic BMW M1 of the late 1970s.

The i5, on the other hand, will likely need more development time. It’s said the i5 will probably hit production in 2017, a year after BMW’s actual birthday. Perhaps the i9 will be BMW’s physical present to itself while the announcement of the i5 will continue the birthday hype into the future.

However at this point, BMW is still trying to figure out how to increase i-branded production at its new plant in Leipzig, Germany. "When we decide on more i models, then we would need more production capacity and … the next two years I think we have (are) limited to the current production line," Lichte concluded.

Things are looking pretty good for Infiniti’s future despite having its worldwide president, Johan de Nysschen, jump ship to Cadillac . Plans are already in place for a whole crop of new vehicles to debut by 2018, including a 700-horsepower, four-door coupe slotted over the current Q70 flagship.

Though Infiniti hasn’t officially named the sedan yet, the naming scheme dictates a Q80 or Q90 nomenclature. The car may share Mercedes’ modular, rear-wheel-drive platform, thanks to the $1.36 billion deal struck between the companies. Its power will come from an in-house, turbocharged V-6. Estimates of its power output of 600 to 700 horsepower comes from comments Nysschen made while still at Infiniti. The expected arrival date for the Q80/Q90 lands somewhere in 2017 or 2018.

This 700-horsepower Porsche Panamera competitor would be in addition to the smaller Q50 Eau Rouge. Debuted at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show, the Q50 Eau Rouge makes uses of many Nissan GT-R parts, including its hand-built, 3.8-liter, turbocharged V-6. Carbon fiber and other lightweight parts abound, making it a serious competitor to the Mercedes E63 AMG and BMW M5 .

Even with all that GT-R-level performance, Infiniti only expects to sell roughly 500 Eau Rouge sedans a year. That’s almost hard to believe, even with the Eau Rouge’s sticker price exceeding $100,000.

Lexus’ IS line is very popular and a hot seller. The recently redesigned sedan combines futuristic, swoopy looks with typical Lexus luxury and build quality. It also has proven to be a legitimate sports sedan, besting both a BMW 335i and Cadillac ATS in independent testing. We recently reported on a possible coupe variant , and now we have a rendering of the IS C convertible update. The current IS C, while competent and classy, is a bit long in the tooth. It has been around since 2009 and, as of July 2014, hasn’t enjoyed the redesign the rest of the IS line received.

Our own Mark McNabb tested a 2014 IS 350 C F-Sport , and came away impressed with the drivetrain, luxurious interior, and power-folding hardtop. However, there is no denying the car’s age. Five years is an eternity in the automotive world, so Lexus needs to up its game and redesign

America has taken the Nurburgring track by storm this summer. Not only is Ford testing the upcoming Mustang SVT , but Cadillac too went to Germany to put the hotter, V-badged versions of the CTS and ATS through their paces. We’ve already seen the beefed-up sedans smoke their tires around Nordschleife, thanks to our skilled spy photographers, while video footage showed the ATS-V is fast enough for some rally-like jumping.

Thanks to TouriClips, who spends and awful lot of time on the "Green Hell" (and we’re thankful for that), we can now have a better look at the CTS-V too. Our previous spy shots indicated that the sedan felt quite cozy on the ’Ring, and the video comes to prove we weren’t just whistling dixie. The CTS-V looks planted and composed through the track’s corners, suggesting that the extra power stuffed under the hood comes with a great deal of chassis updates and precise handling.

Although the high-performance sedan is still hidden under swirly camouflage, the footage hints there’s a whining, supercharged engine between the front wheels. This can only mean the CTS-V will be launched with the same 6.2-liter, V-8 powerplant fitted in the 2015 Corvette Z06 . Previous reports suggested Cadillac could use a twin-turbo, 4.5-liter V-8, but that scenario seems less likely. Hit the play button and leave your thoughts in the comments section.
