  Future cars in the making. Should they be an innocent drawing, a fine computer rendering or real driving concept, they always preview the cars of the future in some aspects.

Launched in 2012 as Hyundai ’s first compact with a turbocharged engine, the Veloster Turbo is being facelifted for the 2015 model year, with a camouflaged prototype already stretching its wheels around the company’s research and development center in Germany .

Although details are scarce and the vehicle is hidden under a thick wrap, it’s more than obvious that the Veloster Turbo is getting the same Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 treatment as the company’s larger, premium cars.

The update will begin with a new, larger front grille and will continue with a revised front bumper and headlamps. Round back, the rear bumper and the taillights will also change shape.

What we can see in these spy shots is a set of new wheels, which come in a twin five-spoke format and are finished in a bi-color pattern. A great improvement over the fan-like, cheap-looking rims offered on the current compact .

Some interior updates are likely to be implemented as well, beginning with a revised Supervision Cluster and ending with more soft-touch surfaces and other amenities that keep a cabin modern.

Engine-wise, we wouldn’t be surprised to see Hyundai keeping the 1.6-liter four-pot at 201 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. A small improvement in fuel economy — now standing at 27 mpg city and 38 mpg highway — is likely though.

Rumors of a possible BMW two-seat roadster , dubbed the Z2 , have been swirling for some time now. But with BMW launching one new model after another, talks about the Z2 have been relegated to low whispers. But don’t misinterpret inaction for dead action because BMW still has plans for the Z2, as it has released new details that ought to give us a fresh idea on what to expect from the entry-level roadster .

According to Car and Driver, the Z2 will carry a slew of features unique to the Z4 , including the use of a fabric roof that should help reduce the weight of the sports car . That’s an important characteristic to have in light of another new detail that’s pretty disappointing; the Z2 will come standard in front-wheel drive, which won’t generate the kind of performance and agility as an AWD system.

But its not like the Z2 loses its charm with that shortcoming. After all, BMW is preparing the car to serve a specific purpose and trying to do too much could impede its true identity as an entry-level sports car . The car will share its platform with the new Mini lineup, which adds more credence to the belief that the Z2 will be built with weight savings in mind. This will allow BMW to offer a versatile package to complement the expected choice of four-cylinder engines.

The company has given no indication on the powertrain it plans to use in the Z2, but we’d be surprised if it doesn’t stick to its plans to use a four banger engine that produces between 160 and 230 horses. We could also see as many as 300 horses and all-wheel drive in the top-of-the-line M-Series model. BMW has some choices to make with regards to the engine lineup, but we’re confident it can cook something up from its modular engine architecture. A lot of options seem in play at this point.

According to the source, we can expect to see the Z2 in late 2016 or late 2017, with prices ranging from $30k in its base format to $50k for the AWD Z2 M.

If this news does not make you believe in a higher being, you should probably not be spending that much time at a website called TopSpeed. Jaguar is bringing an honest-to-god, proper three-pedal manual to the F-Type.

The news was first dropped in an Auto Guide interview at the 2013 Chicago Auto Show , and recently Motor Trend is stating it is confirmed. On top of the news of the transmission choice changes, there is also going to be an AWD version of the F-Type as well.

Considering the tail-happy nature of the F-Type, an AWD variant makes sense for Jaguar to bring in buyers who may be intimidated by its handling characteristics. We have no word yet on which will come first, nor how long it will be until those models will be available.

If I was a betting man, I would say the manual F-Type arrives shortly, in time for next summer, while the AWD version will take some time to properly sort out the performance and handling dynamics Jaguar demands from its smallest car.

Either way, we are getting more models of the the F-Type and that is only a good thing.

The Volkswagen Golf R 400 Concept made its debut at the 2014 Beijing Auto Show and immediately, the hot hatch became one of the most exciting models on display. The positive reception was heard all the way in Germany and in response, VW has confirmed that the Golf R 400 Concept won’t be a concept for very long. Equally important, Volkswagen’s R&D boss Heinz-Jakob Neusser also revealed that the production model will produce more horsepower than the "400" in its name will alludes to.

All this should ring music to the ears of those pining to see a production version of the Golf R 400 Concept. Once its built, the Golf R 400 will end up being the crown jewel of the entire Golf lineup, which already includes luminaries like the Golf GTI and the Golf R .

All that though and we still can’t get over the treat of seeing a 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine inside the sports hatch packing 400 horsepower. On top of that, it will also carry a dual-clutch automatic transmission and a 4Motion all-wheel-drive system.

Though specific performance details haven’t been announced, it’s reasonable to expect a 0-yo-60-mph time of under four seconds to go with a top speed of 174 mph. In the end, those numbers may even be conservative, if the production model has more than 400 ponies on tap.

Well we know it is coming, but we finally have the first solid, rolling evidence of the new four-cylinder Porsche Boxster .

Our spy photographers have captured a new mule doing the rounds at the Nürburgring. While there are no visual cues that this taped up convertible is only running on four-cylinders, our spies report that the exhaust note was anything but the traditional flat-six wail the usually exits the rear of the Porsche .

While there have been some rumors that the upcoming four-banger Porsche may be using a more traditional in-line design engine than a flat-four setup, our spies were only able to catch it for two laps, so there was not enough listening time accurately gauge the engine note.

Beyond the engine note, this appears to be a fairly standard Porsche Boxster with some tape and sensors collecting loads of fancy data for the German engineers to salivate over.

If you ever really doubted all of Porsche’s plans to bring a four-cylinder car to market, this should finally put all those doubts to rest. We may even get shots of the new four-banger Cayman soon as well.

Expect to see a full announcement before the end of the year, with an on-sale date early in 2015.

With Toyota still mum on details, the much rumored Scion FR-S Sedan is still a mystery, but with plenty of speculation floating around it. The only thing we’re sure of is that the FR-S platform has been designed to support a sedan body style , as Toyota chief engineer Tetsuya Tada revealed last year.

Up until now it was believed that the four-door would be powered by the same 2.0-liter boxer engine - good for 200 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque, found in the coupe. Today, however, a report from Motor Trend quoted inside sources claiming the sedan will actually be sold with two different powertrains.

One of them will be a Subaru -sourced turbocharged, 2.0-liter unit found in the current-generation Legacy that’s tuned to deliver at least 300 horsepower and mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The second model will reportedly gain a hybrid drivetrain, but actual details are unknown except for the fact that Toyota is working on a system "that’s compatible to Subaru’s boxer engine."

The conventional FR-S Sedan is expected to hit showrooms by mid-2016 with the hybrid variant featuring all-wheel-drive to arrive several months later. Compared to the FR-S coupe, the sedan will be 20 inches longer and 4 inches taller for improved interior room.

Finally, Nissan has lifted the veil of secrecy from the GT-R Nismo, and all we can say is "when do we get one?"

The Nismo version is based on the 2015 GT-R and it gained a series of updates that transformed the GT-R into a real track machine, while keeping it perfectly suitable for the road. This is a delicate balance for any automaker, let alone Nissan, who does not have tons of experience in developing high-end supercars .

On the exterior, Nismo worked on improving the car’s aerodynamics, giving it lower front and rear bumpers that were revised for aerodynamic efficiency, sill side skirts and a huge wing on the rear. On the inside, the Nismo GT-R gets special suede-trimmed Nismo sports seats with red stitching, plus a redesigned steering wheel, pedals, gauges and gear knob.

Under the hood, the 3.8-liter, twin-turbo V-6 engine is tricked to deliver an extra 35 ponies, putting it in line with some of the best supercars in the world.

The new Nissan GT-R Nismo will hit dealerships in 2014, following its release in Japan.

It’s been a while since we heard anything of importance from Smart and as it turns out, there was a reason behind that. The Daimler -owned company has been busy with the testing and development of two very important models, the ForTwo and the ForFour .

As if to show everyone that it’s not cutting any corners with the development of both models, Smart decided to release a video of the two cars undergoing winter testing in Sweden . Why Sweden, you ask?

Well, Smart’s chief engineer Markus Riedel explains the rationale behind choosing Sweden as the testing ground is mainly due to its cold winter climate and snowy conditions. It allows the engineers to validate a number of things about the two Smart cars, including all of the car’s functions in the extreme temperatures. The car’s driving capabilities are also put to the test under the cold conditions, checking to see how the ForTwo and ForFour can handle while skidding across a sheet of ice.

After 14 days of testing near the Arctic Circle, Riedel expressed his excitement about both models, telling the world that the new ForTwo and ForFour models are ready to be launched. Finally, right?

Rumors about an SRT -prepped Dodge Dart have been floating around ever since the compact sedan was unveiled at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show . But hopes of a successor for the Neon SRT-4 – phased out in 2005 – were somewhat crushed when SRT CEO Ralph Gilles said at the 2014 Chicago Auto Show that the brand has yet to find the right powertrain for the car.

Months have passed since we’ve heard anything about the Dart SRT, but it appears Dodge finally came to its senses and started working on a high performance compact. The good news came straight from the Fiat Chrysler alliance, who has just unveiled its massive five-year production plan.

With the SRT brand now back under Dodge , a host of new models will be built by 2018, with a high performance version of the Dart among them. Although the company has yet to confirm whether the compact will roll out with a SRT4 badge, it did say the vehicle will arrive in late 2016, right after the current-generation Dart gets its mid-cycle refresh.

The big news is that the brawny version of the sedan will be motivated by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, just like the Caliber SRT4 and the Neon SRT4, and sold with an all-wheel-drive configuration. Specific details aren’t available at the time of this writing, but expect for the Dart SRT to get a beefed-up 2.4-liter Tigershark engine tuned to deliver at least 260 horsepower.

Naturally, the sportier version of the Dart will also arrive with a host of visual upgrades (check out our rendering here ), including a pair aggressive bumpers, a larger apron intake, a rear diffuser, and probably a hood scoop. Under-the-skin improvements are likely to include a stiffer, performance-tuned suspension and additional driving modes.

When it comes to Japanese sports roadsters, there’s nothing better than the Mazda MX-5 . That much a lot of people can agree on. But while the MX-5’s status within this segment is undisputed, a host of automakers are determined to break in and make a name for themselves.

One of these companies is Honda and a few month ago at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show , we were introduced to the Honda S660 Concept , a prototype mini roadster that pays homage to the beloved 90’s model, the Honda Beat.

The Beat ended its production in 1996 but it seems that a successor in the S660 is expected to be produced in the near future. According to a report from Japanese site Response, Honda is preparing to build a production model of the S660 Concept at the company’s plant in Yokkaichi. Yes, that’s the same factory that built the Beat, so there’s a little case here of the Japanese automaker coming full circle with its entry-level sports roadster.

Honda reportedly expects to see a production model of the S660 next year so we’re looking forward to seeing how that one’s going to look and perform. There’s a chance that we’re not going to see anything bigger than a 660 cc, three-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces just 64 horsepower.

But we’re crossing our fingers that Honda opts for a full liter under the production S660. If anything, it deserves as much if its going to line up against the Mazda MX-5.
