  Future cars in the making. Should they be an innocent drawing, a fine computer rendering or real driving concept, they always preview the cars of the future in some aspects.

The luxury SUV bug has bitten its share of automakers in recent years. In all that time, Rolls-Royce has been the exception. But the luxury automaker is reportedly thinking about building one of its own.

Better late than never, Rolls-Royce.

News of Rolls’ new-found interest in developing a luxury SUV came to light after design chief Giles Taylor told Autocar that his design team has began tinkering with sketches of a potential SUV, possibly to gauge the feasibility of building one in the future. That being said, Taylor was also quick to point out that the team is still in the infancy stage of an SUV design and that any talk of "proportions and three dimensions" are premature.

Essentially, the SUV project is in its embryonic stage and there are still a lot of things that need to fall into place before this proposed vehicle is even considered for production. Taylor, though, seems to be confident that the project could gain some steam in the future. In the meantime, his responsibility is to develop a proposal that doesn’t "undermine the Rolls-Royce brand," but also embraces Rolls’ character of luxury and functionality, wrapped in an SUV package that traces its lineage to the company’s Ghost family.

All signs seem to point to this project progressing smoothly in the coming years, especially now that parent company BMW has become more aggressive in developing new architecture for its top-of-the-range models. The proposed Rolls-Royce SUV could be one of the first recipients of this sophisticated steel, aluminum and carbon fiber-reinforced plastic architecture. That’s one development we all need to keep our eyes on, especially after BMW introduced the Vision Future Luxury Concept , a prototype BMW showed at Beijing last month to preview this new architecture .

On top of that, there remains a growing sense of confidence among Rolls-Royce’s big wigs that a future SUV could play well in an exploding market like China , which the company has targeted as one of its most important landing spots, thanks to the proliferation of Chinese individuals with deep pockets and a taste for luxury.

If anything, people interested in this Rolls-Royce SUV will need to have a whole lot of the former because estimates on a price tag for the vehicle has reached as high as £200,000 ($335,560) with the possibility of becoming more expensive if Rolls-Royce includes all the bells and whistles.

We’re only a few months away from seeing Ford dealerships packed with 2015 Mustangs , but the Blue Oval automaker is still trying to keep some of the essentials in the vault. Luckily enough, it’s not really working, as more and more details continue to leak out. Less than a month ago, for instance, we got a taste of the pony’s options, packages and their pricing via the first major 2015 Mustang leak . Now we’re about to have a look at the vehicle’s ordering guide, which sheds even more light on what customers will be able to have their Mustang fitted with once it goes on sale.

The guide is quite extensive and consists of 21 pages, but we’re already familiar with some of its content, like standard features, colors and what packages each trim level can be equipped with. New on the sheet, however, are the contents of the Performance Package that can be had with both the EcoBoost and the GT models.

For $1,995 — as it was revealed by the previous drip — the bundle will add goodies such as a larger radiator and rear sway bar, heavy-duty front springs, larger brake rotors, 19-inch Gloss Black aluminum wheels and a spoiler delete. Additionally, the pony will benefit from a unique chassis tuning and calibration.

Moving over to the Mustang GT, the package will bring most of the features and tweaks from the EcoBoost plus 3.73 Torsen limited-slip differential, a strut tower brace, a K Brace and Brembo six-piston front brakes, the latter only available on vehicles selected with a manual transmission. For the GT, the Performance Package is priced at $2,495.

You might also be interested in having a look at the five wheel designs that Ford will be offering. They all come in 19-inch sizes, but feature different twin-spoke styling and a multi-spoke design. None of them, however, are available as standard and require a Performance Package or a 50 Years Appearance Package.

You’re probably wondering why we’ve been talking about all of the above and haven’t said anything about performance specs. Well, the order guide doesn’t list any of them, with the respective sections being marked as TBA. Looks like we’ll have to wait a bit longer to find out more about horsepower, torque and 0-to-60 mph times. Make sure you stick around, ’cause we’ll be back as soon as we lay our eyes on them.

A high-performance version of the ELR has been in the rumormill ever since Cadillac introduced the plug-in hybrid , but the Detroit-based manufacturer has been rather silent on the matter. The vehicle was engulfed in even more obscurity earlier this year, when GM vice president Mark Reuss said Cadillac is looking at expanding the coupe ’s "tuning envelope" without revealing any actual details.

We have no idea what that means, but we might find out by the end of the year because the manufacturer started testing an ELR that appears to be sportier than the standard version launched for the 2014 model year. The news comes via Autoblog, who revealed that a coupe fitted with larger brakes and four-piston Brembo calipers borrowed from the Buick Regal GS just hit the streets.

Details are scarce right now, but an updated brake package can only mean one thing: Cadillac is planting more horsepower under the ELR’s hood. Add the fact that it wears a new grille hidden under a camouflaged nose and a new set of wheels, and it’s evident that a brawnier ELR is starting to take shape.

What’s more, the said coupe has been spotted in the company of a Tesla Model S , the all-electric sedan that’s been smoking Dodge Vipers at the drag strip .

Still, there’s no confirmation that Cadillac is indeed prepping an ELR-V, but we’re definitely looking forward to seeing an ELR with more than 207 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque at its disposal.

It’s been a while since we’ve seen the upcoming Mercedes-Benz CLS out in the open, but that doesn’t mean the Germans haven’t been working like crazy on the four-door coupe .

Scheduled to lose its covers at the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed , alongside its Shooting Brake brother, the facelifted CLS has been spotted once again by our paparazzi, this time wearing very little camouflage over its headlamps and front grille.

We already know that the duct tape is used to hide the new Active Multibeam ILS LED system — a first for Mercedes — and that the new grille will get only one horizontal bar, but it’s good to see new CLS once again before it goes public at the famed British event.

In Mercedes-Benz -related news, our spy photographers have also caught a glimpse of the revised M-Class facelift . The SUV that’s set to be unveiled in the fourth quarter of the year was caught with a covered front fascia but without the piece that was obstructing its front grille on previous occasions .

Remember last week’s report claiming Porsche is working on a Cayman model that will slot above the already exciting GTS? The rumor surfaced only one month after the Cayman GTS was unveiled to the world, making it seem a bit suspicious, but it appears it wasn’t just tittle-tattle.

We’ve received confirmation for Motor Trend’s piece straight from our spy photographers stationed in Germany, who have captured the sports car while being driven on the country’s public roads.

Design-wise, the GT4 — the name has yet to be confirmed — isn’t astonishingly different when compared to the Cayman GTS, but some new elements are there to point out that we’re dealing with a completely new version. For starters, check out the cool wing mounted at the back, making this sports car the GT3 of the Cayman lineup.

Then there’s the revised front bumper. Although it carries styling cues seen on the GTS, the intakes are rather raw in appearance, lacking the beauty elements seen on the current range-topping model. Getting back to the car’s rear fascia, the wing isn’t the only addition. A new, protuberant spoiler has been attached between the taillights, reminding us of the 911 GT3 RS.

The engine that will be motivating the Cayman GT4 is a mystery, but it appears Porsche has already decided to go with a hybrid powertrain. It’s not clear whether the Germans will pair the electric motor with a four-cylinder or an inline-six engine, but the consensus is that the outcome will depend on the 919 Hybrid ’s performance at the 24 Hours of Le Mans this summer.

Output is expected to sit around 400 horsepower, while pricing is rumored to be set at $125,000, a whooping $50,000 more than the Cayman GTS and only $5,000 below the 911 GT3. This may seem a little counterproductive for Porsche, considering it will outmatch the 911 Carrera S in nearly every measurable, but there is a plug-in hybrid version of the 911 in the works that is rumored to crank out over 700 ponies and the Turbo S with 560 ponies, giving buyers plenty of options to choose from in both the Cayman and 911 lineups without rendering the 911 obsolete.

It’s been a while since Honda had a sports car to call its own. Between 2000 and 2009, the S2000 proudly wore that title, but it slowly fizzled out toward the end of its lifespan. Things are soon set to change, as recent rumblings have indicated that Honda is finally bringing the S2000 back to life with a spiritual successor. With the anticipated arrival of the S660 and the hybrid NSX — badged as a Honda in other markets — the S2000’s successor will give the brand a healthy 1-2-3 punch.

It’s a welcome development for a manufacturer that has veered away from its sporty image in recent years in favor of offering mainstream models. But with rival automakers developing their own sports car pushes, it was time for Honda to ante up, too.

Details behind the successor to the S2000 have been minimal at best, but Auto Express has noted that the sports car is expected to be configured as a coupe rather than a convertible. It’ll also sit in the middle of Honda’s sports car family, with the aforementioned S660 serving as the base model and the hybrid NSX serving as the flagship, high-performance model. Additionally, the future S2000 will also use a mid-mounted, 2.0-liter, turbocharged engine instead of the front-mounted, naturally aspirated engine the original S2000 roadster used.

Talks are apparently underway deep within Honda headquarters to gauge the feasibility of this sports car and by all indication, it appears that company execs are leaning more and more to green lighting its development.

Should it see the light of production day, the S2000 is being touted as carrying similar sharp lines and narrow headlights to at least be close to the current design of the NSX, which means that it will be far departure from the current spate of Hondas already out on the market today.

Once all the details are ironed out and development begins, we can expect the sports car to arrive in dealerships no later than 2017 with a price of about £35,000, which is around $59,000 based on current exchange rates.

BMW has been fitting its M3 cars with inline-six and V-8 engines exclusively for about 22 years now, but that might change in the future, as the Germans are considering a four-cylinder unit for its high-performance sedan .

Speaking to Motoring at the launch of the brand-new M3 and M4 in Portugal, BMW M chief of product management Carsten Pries said we "could see a future M3 powered by a four-cylinder engine" if the company rolls out "a car with less mass."

Although Pries refrained from giving away more details, such a move is likely to take place when the next-generation M3 and M4 arrive. That’s at least six years from now and it means there’s plenty of time for a new four-pot to be developed or for a wholly different strategy to spawn out of Munich.

But if the first scenario comes to fruition, it will be somewhat similar to what BMW did with the all-new M3 and M4. It will reduce the weight of the car and add a smaller unit that will deliver performance figures close to those churned by the current inline-six, but with improved fuel economy.

“Performance can be boosted with more power, but if we are to address issues like emissions and consumption [in the future], we have to look more at weight. We decided in this generation to address the [upward] weight spiral,” Pries added.

Of course, squeezing more than 400 horsepower out of a four-cylinder will give BMW engineers some pains, but the target isn’t impossible to achieve. With Mercedes-Benz and AMG having already managed to get 360 horsepower out of the A45 AMG , it’s hard to believe the Munich crew won’t be able to take it up a notch.

The M1 is one of the most iconic cars ever produced by BMW , and it was the model responsible for the M Division that creates all the cars we love today, like the M5 and the venerable M3 .

Fans of the Roundel brand have been clamoring for BMW to revive this epic nameplate and take on competitors like the Audi R8 and Mercedes SLS AMG for years now, but there has been little movement.

Rather, what we got was a new hybrid car that looks like an M1 called the i8 . While the i8 is an incredible piece of engineering, it is not a fire-breathing M car. But what if it could be?

At the recent launch of the M3 and M4 , CarAdvice asked M Division boss Friedrich Nitschke about the potential for this new car to spawn an M car. His response is encouraging.

When it comes to moving the advanced powertrain and lightweight carbon-fiber technology over to an M car, Nitschke said its a matter "capacity not a question of know-how." Basically, it would not be hard to move anything over, they just need approval from the higher ups in BMW. As it stands, the M Division is ready to make one, if the BMW board will green light the project.

With so many new models challenging its place atop the midsize luxury segment, the BMW M5 probably needs an upgrade more than any other model in the BMW lineup. Not that it’s any of the car’s fault; but with the arrival of cars like the Cadillac CTS Sedan and the Jaguar XF-R , the M5 needs its own shot in the arm to remain relevant.

As it turns out, BMW M GmbH President Friedrich Nitschke has a few plans on how to accomplish that. Talking to Auto Motor und Sport, Nitschke revealed that the next-generation M5 will receive a host of new changes, including the adoption of an all-wheel-drive system that will allow the M5 to be as balanced as some of its current competitors.

Another likely change to the next-generation M5 would be to make the car much lighter than its current configuration, possibly losing as much as 180 pounds in the process. The entire objective, it seems, is to give the M5 a more performance-oriented character that the current generation seems to lack, at least in the eyes of BMW.

Nitschke stopped short of officially confirming these changes for the next-generation M5, but the mere indication of wholesale changes to one of the most popular models of BMW’s M division seems to suggest that BMW is prepared to show the world that the M5 is far from a finished model.

People have been talking about a possible BMW X4 for quite some time now and now that the concept version has been officially unveiled, those rumors have been officially confirmed. To add a little extra fuel to the X4 fire, there are now rumors about a possible X4M version. Not a big surprise though, considering that almost each model in BMW’s lineup also has an M version.

The upcoming BMW X4M comes as a direct competitor to high-performance variants of the upcoming Porsche Macan and will go on sale in 2015. The X4M is dubbed internally as "an M3 on stilts" and will be powered by the same M3 in-line six-cylinder engine that is derived from an extensively reworked N55. The engine will be mated to an M-engineered torque-sensing differential, which will drive all four wheels. BMW will also offer an advanced electronically controlled torque vectoring system, and X4M-specific springs, bushes and damping rates.

From the M3 the future X4M will be also adopting the BMW M’s Electro-mechanical steering and a revised M-DCT transmission. On the exterior the X4M will use typical M design elements, including a more current M-Type kidney grille, exterior mirrors, subtle rear boot lid spoiler, traditional quad exhausts and a full carbon-fiber-reinforced-plastic roof - a first for an X-Series M model.

Updated 05/12/2014: New details on the future X4M suggest that the model could arrive in 2017, and will carry the high-powered, turbocharged six-cylinder currently under development for the upcoming M2. This engine is rumored to deliver around 280 horsepower. (Drive)
