And here we thought that recalls were left behind in 2010. How silly of us. 2011 is barely a month old and we already have our first recall of the year.
Taking in the honor is General Motors who is recalling 26,751 SUVs and trucks from its 2011 model line-up. According to GM, the problem concerns a defect in the rear-axle cross pins, which were not heated properly and, as a result, could fracture and get displaced within the rear axle, creating an interference condition and, eventually, causing the rear axle to lock. This, in turn, could affect the driver’s ability to maintain directional control of the vehicle and a crash could occur without warning.
As is the case with all recalls, General Motors has instructed their dealerships to install a new rear axle cross pin to any affected vehicle at no cost to the owner. As expected, GM’s dealers will install a new rear axle cross pin free of charge, with the safety recall to begin before the end of the month.
We kind of get the feeling that 2011 is going to be a big year for automakers. We don’t have a tangible explanation for it, but there’s something about the air this year that feels like the next 12 months will be filled with more ups than downs and, hopefully, a lot less recalls than 2010.
We’re barely a few days into the new year and we’re already getting excited over the first major event for 2011, the North American International Motor Show. All the happenings will take place at the Cobb Center in Detroit on January 10, 2011 so we felt it was an opportune time to provide a heads-up of what to expect when the floor opens.
The list of vehicles we’ve included on the list are cars that have officially - and unofficially - punched in their tickets for Detroit. Some cars that will appear are still being withheld for suspense purposes, but what’s the fun in having a preview if we can’t dig up the cars that want their presence to be a surprise?
Either way, we’ve included all of these models so head on over past the jump to see which cars to expect when the NAIAS opens its doors next week.
While the Detroit Auto Show is just a few weeks away, General Motors has decided to offer us a few hints on what the company will be offering, and the first details revealed are on the GMC Sierra All Terrain HD Concept.
Based on the Sierra HD, the Sierra All Terrain HD concept is shorter, wider, and taller than the original. It features a unique five-foot, eight-inch Crew Cab/short box body configuration that supports a wheels-at-the-corners proportion. Its exterior design is accentuated by a large, airflow-optimized grille, streamlined bumpers, large fender flares, LED lights, smooth-appearance front marker lamps integrated behind the top edge of the windshield glass, and 20-inch aluminum wheels wrapped in 35-inch-tall BFGoodrich tires.
Under the hood GMC has placed a 6.6L Duramax turbo-diesel V-8 engine that delivers a total of 397 HP and 765 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine is mated to an Allison 1000 six-speed automatic transmission.
UPDATE 01/06/2011: News images for the 2011 GMC Sierra All Terrain HD concept have been revealed. These images feature more shots of the exterior and even a couple highlighting the interior of GM’s modified heavy duty truck. Check them out in the gallery provided!
Live up north and want to turn your car on to warm it up before you get in? Live down south and want to get in your car when it has reached a comfortable cooling temperature? Well, OnStar, together with GM, have made this possible by the expansion of their mobile app technology.
Owners of most new 2011 Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick, and GMC vehicles will have the ability to turn on their car, honk their horns, work their lights, and lock and unlock their doors straight from their smartphone. Gone will be the days when car owners will have to be within a certain distance or even have their keys with them to utilize the capabilities of a traditional vehicle key fob.
These GM brand specific apps will not only provide these vehicle key fob services to you, but they will also provide key diagnostic information right at your fingertips. This information will include fuel tank level and range, remaining oil life, current and recommended tire pressure, and lifetime average miles per gallon. Not satisfied yet? The apps will also be able to provide car owners with current odometer readings, vehicle VINs, and OnStar account numbers right from the phone!

GMC has decided that they will acknowledge the age old saying of "bigger is better" by adding jumbo-sized versions of the already popular Denali HD 2500 series. GMC announced today that the Sierra HD Denali will become available in Denali HD crew cab versions of the 3500 Series (1-ton) for both single rear wheel and dually versions in 2WD and 4WD applications - next to the current 2500 series (3/4 ton), crew cab and 4WD version. Following the success of the 2500 series, additional versions simply had to be created in order to take advantage of the popularity the truck currently has.
The Sierra HD Denali is powered by a Vortec 6.0L gas V-8/six-speed automatic powertrain. For a little more of the green paper, GMC can also provide a new Duramax 6.6 liter turbo diesel V-8 delivering a total of 397 hp at 3,000 rpm and 765 lb.-ft. of torque at 1,600 rpm. The 0-60 mph sprint will be made in less than 9 seconds and quarter-mile in less than 16 seconds in 2500HD models. The engine is mated to a new Allison 1000 six-speed automatic transmission.

We are all well aware of situation down in Haiti, and while celebrities are holding telethons and individuals are pledging their last dollar to the relief effort, the American automaker General Motors is taking action at the request of the U.N. by sending a fleet of GMC Sierra pick up trucks to the distressed island nation as a joint effort between the GM Foundation and the William J. Clinton Foundation.
According to the former U.S. president, "I’m pleased the GM Foundation has made a generous donation of trucks to our relief efforts in Haiti, which will be instrumental in mobilizing food and lifesaving supplies,...The American auto industry has made great strides to increase aid and assistance to Haiti, and GM’s leadership demonstrates what corporate citizens can do to help the people of Haiti rebuild and recover from the massive earthquake” said Clinton. With the GMC Sierra being one of the hardest working trucks in America, we are sure that they will be right at home being put to work in Haiti.
The American truck builder GMC unveiled the Granite concept, a compact crossover with a unique opening arrangement similar to a German cousin, at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show. The GMC Granite Concept combines the same monolithic stone like design that General Motors brought to market with the full size Terrain, however this time in a smaller streamlined MPV style body. The new concept combines urban industrial design with everyday practicality and is aimed at young time crunched professionals.
If the Granite becomes a production vehicle, it will become the smallest GMC ever. Powered by a boosted 1.4 Liter four cylinder engine and gas sipping six speed transmission, the turbocharged mini truck would make for a very efficient, practical and stylish mode of urban commuting. The exterior of the Granite features an over sized version of GMC’s signature grill with a pair of vertical LED headlamps that trail back into either fender and dare we say R8 inspired vents underneath. Add in an interior that is easy on the eyes, a brushed metal tip sticking out the center of the back bumper and cap it off with a 20 inch set of wheels and you get one bad little GMC truck.
First launched in 2007, the GMC Acadia is being offered for the first time with the Denali line. The new Acadia Denali will go on sale in the third quarter of 2010 and will be available in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive models, as well as seven- and eight-passenger configurations.
Acadia Denali is powered by a 3.6L direct injection V-6 engine with VVT mated to an advanced six-speed automatic transmission.
The SUV will feature a mono-color exterior (Quicksilver Metallic, Summit White, Carbon Black, Red Jewel Tintcoat or White Diamond Tricoat) and chrome honeycomb grille, chrome accents, body-color fascias and fender flares, mahogany wood steering wheel and wood accents, lighted sill plates and 20-inch, two-tone chrome-clad wheels.
Pontiac’s Torrent was not exactly the best fit to share the platform of the Chevrolet Equinox SUV. So for the new Equinox, the SUV-friendly GMC get the variation with the Terrain. Prices for the 2010 Terrain range from $24,995 for the SLE1 model and go up to $29,995 for the SLT2 model.
Just like it’s Equinox twin, the GMC Terrain will be offered with a choice of two engines: a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 182 hp (estimated 30 mpg) and a more powerful 3.0-liter V6 engine with 264 hp. Both engines will be mated to a six-speed automatic transmissions, and will be available in front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive.
While on paper this may seem like a purely badge-engineered version of the Equinox, there is more to the Terrain. Although mechanically similar, the Equinox still goes for the look of a Lexus RX 350, the Terrain is going after a tougher truck-like market.
