June is traditionally a robust month for auto sales in the U.S., but this time it marks a 17-year low according to the Chicago Tribune. Figures are particularly down for American carmakers. Reports indicate that General Motors’ sales were down 18%, Ford lost 28%, and Chrysler slid by 36%. This is not isolated to domestic car makers, as Toyota’s sales also lost 21% and Nissan was down 18%.
Although sales numbers aren’t sexy, they show a real gauge of the buying public. Despite offering a buffet of discounts ranging from employee pricing to gas discounts, buyers stayed away in droves. If the buying public doesn’t respond soon, this could be the beginning of brand consolidation. For instance, auto industry analyst Erich Merkle of IRN Inc., suggested that GM may not only dump Hummer, but also look to eliminate GMC because all of its products are redundant.
The biggest bright spots were Honda and Volkswagen who had approximate June gains of 14% and 5% respectively.

General Motors will unveil at the Chicago Auto Show the 2009 GMC Sierra Hybrid, a powerful full-size pickup that achieves 40-percent greater city fuel economy and a 25-percent improvement in overall fuel economy. The 2009 Sierra Hybrid will go on sale in the fourth quarter of 2008 and is based on the strong and capable Sierra platform that was introduced for the 2007 model year.
The 2009 Sierra Hybrid is powered by a two-mode hybrid system and a powerful 6.0 liters gas V8 that delivers highly efficient performance, including all-electric driving up to 30 mph.
It will be offered in the Crew Cab body style on both 2WD and 4WD models. Each model is equipped with several standard, popular features, including StabiliTrak electronic stability control system, a locking rear axle and a trailering package. Sierra Hybrid also offers dual-stage frontal air bags and head curtain side air bags, and it is the only full-size truck with five-star side-impact ratings in federal crash tests.

>> read GMC will unveil the Denali XT Concept at the Chicago Auto Show. It offers a 50-percent increase in combined fuel economy over comparable small pickup trucks when running on gasoline, and it incorporates a new, muscular form in a performance-styled, hybrid sport-utility truck (SUT).
The concept is powered by a 4.9L version of GM’s small-block V8 engine that features fuel-saving technologies such as direct-injection technology and Active Fuel Management. The V8 engine delivers 326 hp. It uses direct-injection technology to produce the power of a larger engine, but consumes less fuel and produces lower emissions.
The Denali XT’s two-mode hybrid system is partnered with the 4.9L engine and uses an electrically variable transmission to enhance fuel efficiency in city and highway driving. In city driving, all-electric propulsion is used at low speeds; on the highway, fixed-gear operation enables efficient performance even when towing a trailer.

General Motors has announced that the GMC Yukon Hybrid will be presented in a 60-second commercial during the second quarter of Sunday’s Super Bowl telecast.
The commercial uses images from Sisyphus, a 1976 Oscar-nominated short film by Hungarian animator Marcell Jankovics. In the animated commercial, a person is shown pushing a ball up a hill. The narrator asks: "Why push? Why change? Why grow? Why dream?"
GMC calls the Yukon Hybrid the first full-sized hybrid SUV. Leo Burnett Worldwide, GMC’s new ad agency, created the spot.
Super Bowl XLII airs on Fox on Sunday, Feb. 3. The network is charging advertisers about $2.7 million for 30 seconds of airtime.
Cadillac will air a 30-second commercial during the pre-game show and two spots during the post-game show, Cadillac spokesman Kevin Smith said today. The commercials are for the Escalade SUV and CTS sedan, he said. The Modernista ad agency created those spots.
