Goodwood Festival of Speed

Goodwood Festival of Speed

The Goodwood Festival of Speed - or simply Festival of Speed - is held every year in the grounds of Goodwood House, West Sussex, England during the summer. It is an annual hill climb featuring historic motor racing vehicles.

Open top road/track cars have become the rage these days. That’s especially true in Great Britain where seemingly a new startup comes to life promising to take the segment to a new level. Elemental is the latest to try its luck and it has come out swinging, unveiling the RP-1 and promising to lay waste to the KTM X-Bow and the Ariel Atom .

It’s an awfully difficult segment to launch new products into, especially when it’s pitted against some very established competitors. But Elemental is undaunted and the British company is relishing the opportunity to prove its worth with the RP-1.

You can’t blame the company for at least being confident. After all, the RP-1 is being promised as an evolution of the road and track car and taking it to a new level with a package that includes a powerful Ford EcoBoost engine wrapped in a lightweight carbon fiber body.

In a perfect world, such proclamations are treated with wide-eyed admiration. But with so many of this kind of cars in the market, Elemental still needs to prove itself before it’s treated with the same reverence as a company like Ariel.

The company has gotten the ball rolling in that regard. Now comes the time where the RP-1 prove its worth.

Updated 06/23/2014: The first images on the Elemental RP-1 were revealed before the car’s official debut at the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed. Enjoy!

For those of you who have been sleeping under a rock the past few weeks, it seems as if the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed , which kicks off on June 26th, is shaping up to be one hell of a spectacle. We already learned that you’ll get to run the hillclimb in a digital version of the GTI Roadster and that the Q50 Eau Rouge will clear its V-6, twin-turbocharged throat on the course too. And now we have learned that Jaguar Land Rover Special Operations — the folks responsible for giving thick-walleted customers customized Jags and Rovers — will reveal a new model during the festivities.

According to the press release, the new vehicle will be a Jaguar, so we can rest assured knowing that it won’t be some oddly named and obnoxiously expensive Land Rover . Rather, it will be some sleek sexiness from the British big cat.

As of now, the details are very scarce, as Jag didn’t even give us the slightest clue on what this car will be. Stay tuned to TopSpeed.comand we’ll bring you all of the juicy bits once the car hits Goodwood.

McLaren currently offers two racing versions of its 12C sports car: the 12C GT3 and the 12C GT Can-Am Edition . McLaren specially designed the 12C GT3 version for competitions like the FIA Group GT3 where it obtained its first victory at the 2012 FIA GT1 World Championship season.

McLaren has now decided to expand the 12C lineup even further with the addition of a new 12C GT Sprint edition. The new model will make its world debut during this weekend’s Goodwood Festival of Speed and McLaren will limit it to only 20 units. Before you get too excited, we have to let you know that the new 12C Sprint edition is a track-only model.

McLaren GT is developing the model and will base it on the road-going 12C, but it will feature some new systems and an optimized aerodynamic package.

Updated 10/1/2013: McLaren has released some additional information, including the £195,000 (about $316,150 at the current exchange rates) base price for the 12C GT Sprint. The Brittish maker also revealed a few more images of the upcoming supercar.

The 2013 Goodwood Festival of Speed brought together the best supercars in the world this past weekend. One very special model, the McLaren P1 , saw its way up the hill with Former Formula One World Champion Jenson Button behind the wheel.

Button was quite impressed by the amount of power delivered by the P1 and he managed to complete the course in about 53 seconds.

The awesome performance is no surprise, considering the McLaren P1 combines a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-8 from the 12C with a twin-clutch transmission with an embedded electric motor to create a total power figure of 903 horsepower and an estimated 1,100 pound-feet of torque at launch. As a result, the P1 sprints from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.7 seconds and up to a top speed of 217 mph.

Check out the video to see how fun this experience was for Button.

The upcoming Gran Turismo 6 will feature a total of 33 locations, with 71 different layouts. One of these locations is the 1.86 km (1.15-mile) hill climb at Goodwood, which joins famous locations, like Silverstone and Willow Springs.

At the 2013 Goodwood Festival of Speed , Gran Turismo will launch a new demo that will allow the expected 185,000-plus spectators to challenge Nick Heidfeld’s 41.6-second course record set in a Formula 1 car in 1999. Nissan and Alfa Romeo and Ford will also have pods on their Moving Motor Show displays.

Citroen will come to this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed with the DS3 Cabrio Racing — a concept car that combines the sporty feeling of a DS3 Racing hatchback with the sophistication of new DS3 Cabrio . The new concept was built by the Citroen Racing team and will offer some innovative features when compared to a base DS3 Cabrio .

The new DS3 Cabrio Racing Concept is offered in a bespoke Moondark matte textured grey paint combined with black chrome insertions on the door handles, trunk trim and door mirrors. The concept also sits on specially designed set of 19-inch alloy wheels painted in gloss black. The wheels are contrasted by brake calipers coated in Carmin red.

On the inside, the concept gets bucket seats in DS design with three types of fabric: Napa full-grain leather, DS-embossed leather and Alcantara. Citroen Racing also used Carmin red on the seats, dashboard, gearshift and the door side strips.

Under the hood, the concept retains the usual 1.6-liter engine that delivers a total of 202 horsepower.

Jaguar F-Type R

Jaguar just revealed plans to unveil "an exciting design study" at the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed set to take place at the end of this week. According to the first details we have on it, the model will be based on the F-Type roadster and will be driven up the Goodwood Hill by the company’s Chief Engineer, Vehicle Integrity, Mike Cross.

While these were all the official details revealed by Jaguar, we presume that this will be some kind of preview for the upcoming F-Type R version ; or even better, the previously rumored 700-horsepower F-Type R-S.

It is also worthy of note that this could simply be the debut of the F-Type Coupe . However, we don’t think that Jaguar would make a huge fuss over attaching a fixed-top roof to the F-Type. Also pointing to this being the R or R-S variant is the fact that Jag will put on display three other R and R-S variants of other models, including: XFR-S , XJR and XKR-S GT .

We’ll find out soon enough!

When Peugeot revealed its wild 2012 Onyx concept, we knew that there was little hope of it ever seeing production and a short email exchange with the automaker confirmed our suspicion. So, we wrote off any chance of a private owner reeling in this awesome copper-highlighted concept car. Well, now there is a chance for one person to get his or her hands on it.

No, you can’t take it home, but you can get a ride in it. At the 2013 Goodwood Festival of Speed , Peugeot will raffle off a chance to take a ride in the 680-horsepower, diesel-hybrid-powered supercar at its first public demonstration at the 20th anniversary running of the FoS.

The ride will take place on July 13th and the raffle will take place on July 1st. What’s more, you also get two free tickets into the Goodwood Fos. Unfortunately, the contest is only open to UK residents and you have to provide your own transportation to the event.

If you’re interested, you can enter the contest here.

The Goodwood Festival of Speed is one of just a handful of places where you can see some of the greatest classic cars and new performance cars being driven the way they were meant to be.

One of the highlights of this year’s show will be Porsche’s celebration of the 911 turning 50 years old. In commemoration its half-centennial, Porsche will bring 911s from various years throughout its lifespan, including some legendary racing models. Seeing the cars side-by-side should give those attending the show an idea of just how the famed 911 has evolved over the years.

Fortunately, the wait is almost over, as we are winding down to this year’s Goodwood kick off, which comes in July. For us press guys, the Festival comes a little early by way of a preview event that has just completed.

This above video features Harry Metcalfe filming his time at the preview event and it opens with Harry driving in a Lamborghini Espada , which just so happened to be his ride to the event. He also hitched rides in some of the hottest cars that will grace the 2013 Goodwood FoS, including: a McLaren 12C Can Am, a race-prepped Lotus Exige and an Opel Manta 400. The amount of beauty and history in this video is simply astonishing.
