hatchback

A hatchback is a type of automobile design, consisting of a passenger cabin which includes an integrated cargo space, accessed from behind by a hatch or flip-up window. Hatchbacks are also often called three-doors (two entry doors and the hatch) or five-doors (four entry doors and the hatch) cars.

The 2013 SEMA Auto Show is shaping up to be a doozy and the word out of Ford is that the automaker will be bringing an armada of vehicles to Las Vegas.

Fifty-seven in total, in case you’re wondering, which is hugely significant considering that a lot of brands will be out in force themselves to showcase their latest aftermarket offerings.

One Ford model that will be well represented at SEMA is the automaker’s resident pocket rocket, the 2014 Ford Fiesta ST . From the looks of it, five unique Fiesta ST models will be showcased at the event, including one created and developed by an aftermarket company who’s no stranger to the lights of SEMA: Ice Nine Group.

We all remember the company’s program for the Ford Fusion that was displayed at last year’s event. This year, the tuning firm upped the ante with an incredible showcase of creativity and ingenuity wrapped up in a program for the Fiesta ST.

The car itself was transformed in the spirit of a rally car . Notice the Fiesta ST’s grille now has a pair of fog lamps installed on it. That’s not a happenstance addition, fellas. There’s also a carbon-fiber hood, huge fender flares and a rear wing, all of which were added to improve the car’s aerodynamic capabilities.

Meanwhile, the unique custom body wrap is the real highlight of the program, with Ice Nine Group opting for a confluence of colors (white, blue, orange, and black, mainly) that all combine to create a distinctive style and image. Rounding out Ice Nine Group’s take on the Fiesta ST are a new set of 17-inch Braid wheels wrapped in Falken Azenis RT615K tires.

It might be strange to see a livery made famous by one automaker get used by a completely different brand, but in the case of Green Filter USA’s program for the Ford Focus ST , the whole thing somehow works.

According to Green Filter, the decision to use the vintage — and unmistakable — Team Lotus livery on the Focus ST was done as a tribute to Ford ’s tradition in motorsports and its long-standing partnership with Team Lotus Racing.

As you can see, the car comes in that signature green and gold colors of Team Lotus, a nice reminder of the brands’ win at the Indianapolis 500 . The meticulous attention-to-detail that Green Filter exhibited is highlighted by specific reminders to the original Team Lotus racecar , including the exhaust outlets on the custom exhaust kit. A new set of 18-inch wheels from American Racing Wheels were also added into the equation and wrapped in Falken tires.

Performance modifications were also part of Green Filter’s work on the Focus ST. In this particular case, the makers of high-performance and eco-friendly air filters decided on taking advantage of its expertise with the installation of the aforementioned air filters.

The most distinctive characteristic of the PM-Lifestyle still goes back to that Lotus-inspired livery, something that was accomplished by Green Filters, in collaboration with curators from the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Mich., home of the original 1965 Lotus-Ford race car.

The Ford Focus ST is usually turned into a road racer , so it was a bit of a pleasant surprise to see the Focus receive a rally -themed modification, but in such a way that the final product classifies it as a law enforcement vehicle.

Confusing as that may sound, all you need to do is take one look at what Drag Racing Against Gangs & Graffiti (DRAGG) did to the Focus ST to understand why the Focus ST looks as awesome as it does.

The sick custom paint job done on this SEMA -bound Focus ST resembles that of the white and black colors of an actual police cruiser . However, DRAGG takes it up a new level with the addition of LED emergency lights, a custom interior rifle rack and a custom push bar. Taken all together, those new elements effectively turned the Focus ST into a bonafide police rig.

The program fits right in with DRAGG’s mission of helping the youth focus on their future and avoid making decisions that could have a negative impact on their life.

But more than just the aesthetics and law enforcement additions, the DRAGG-tuned Focus ST also comes with a plethora of performance upgrades, highlighted by a Vortech turbocharger and complemented by a high-performance, bolt-on, cat-back exhaust with dual, 4.5-inch, polished stainless-steel tips from Borla, wheels from Motegi Racing, suspension from Eibach Springs and brakes from Wilwood Engineering.

While no performance figures were released, we have a feeling that we should see an addition of about 50 to 75 horsepower to the stock 252 horsepower and a jump from 270 pound-feet to around 365 pound-feet of torque.

Not one to be outdone by the number of other Ford Fiesta STs coming to the SEMA Auto Show , perennial attendee 3D Carbon isn’t going to let the event pass without bringing its own program.

Hardly surprising, right?

This year, 3D Carbon’s work on the 2014 Ford Fiesta ST is all kinds of red, the kind that can’t escape your attention even if you wanted to.

In addition to the splashy red body color of the Fiesta ST, 3D Carbon also spent some time adding a new aerodynamic kit on the sports hatch , installing a whole set of new components that include a front splitter, modified side skirts, a tailgate-mounted spoiler and a rear diffuser. A set of 19-inch Pinzette-M Forgiato wheels are also part of the package and they are wrapped in Pirelli race tires.

Inside, there are plenty more modifications, but the only thing that was mentioned is the two-tone leather upholstery. Ford didn’t mention any performance upgrades, but we expect to see at least a few extra ponies squeezed from the 1.6-liter, EcoBoost engine.

Expect more details about 3D Carbon’s program for the 2014 Ford Fiesta to be revealed in the days leading up to the 2013 SEMA Auto Show.

While we are all waiting for the 2014 Golf R to hit the market, the German tuner ALPHA-N Performance decided to offer a few tricks for the current model.

The base Golf R is powered by a 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine that delivers a total of 270 horsepower. That’s a pretty hefty number for a four-banger, but that’s not the best it can can do.

ALPHA-N Performance updated the Golf R with a new EVOMS sports air filter system and a new, stainless-steel exhaust system that considerably improves the sound of the turbocharged engine. All these changes, combined with a new EVOX systems chip tuning box, jump the total output to 330 horsepower - an increase of 60 horsepower over the base version.

All this power is transferred to the asphalt through all four wheels via the standard DSG gearbox.

The partnership between Ford Racing, Tanner Foust, and COBB Tuning has been churning along for years now and as part of their collaboration, special-edition models are always an expected treat.

Earlier this year, Foust, Ford Racing and COBB Tuning worked on a special-edition Focus , one that we lauded for its unique exterior detail, new carbon-fiber add ons, a new custom grille, fancy race graphics, a wheel and tire program, an a noticeable performance upgrade.

At the 2013 SEMA Auto Show , all three are back to working again, only this time, the choice vehicle is the 2014 Ford Fiesta ST.

Just like the special-edition Focus from earlier this year, the SEMA-bound Fiesta ST that Foust, COBB Tuning, and Ford Racing worked on is a definite treat to the eyes. The digital camouflage wrap already on this military-inspired Fiesta ST jumps out of the picture.

There’s also a new carbon-fiber hood that matches the overall body makeup of the sports hatch. Racing decals are also prevalent, including the vehicle’s apparent tie-up with the Pat Tillman Foundation.

The model also has an upgraded interior and performance modifications that include, among other things, a cold air intake and a sports exhaust system.

More details, like the performance specs, are expected to be unveiled regarding this COBB Tuning/Tanner Foust-tuned Ford Fiesta ST.

A lot of Ford’s SEMA -bound vehicles come with their share of aesthetic and performance upgrades. But you can argue that none come with the kind of visual appeal as the Ford Focus ST that was worked on by Universal Technical Institute.

Thanks to some help from the folks over at Axalta, UTI’s decision to dress up this Focus ST with a vintage Gulf Racing livery speaks to our inner racing enthusiast. There’s something about that recognizable blue and orange livery that just tugs at our strings and its no different then than it is now.

Moving past the Gulf Racing colors, the UTI team also sought the help of Neil Tjin of Tjin Edition to create and design the Focus ST’s exterior look. Once that was taken cared of, the car’s body kit was built by DTM Autobody while the 19-inch deep-concave Forgestar wheels were also added into the car, creating a more track-oriented look that adds more appeal to the sports hatchback’s already impressive looks.

Under the hood of this UTI-tuned Focus ST, an intercooler kit was installed by Vortech Superchargers with Motiv Concepts taking care of the high-flow catalytic converter. Taken together, this Focus ST sees a significant power boost, although the official numbers have yet to be announced.

Either way, this Focus ST is really one for the books. That’s how much love we have for that Gulf Racing livery.

As Ford used us by now, with a few weeks before the 2013 SEMA opens its doors in Las Vegas, the company started to revealed the first details on the models it prepared for the show. One of these vehicles is a pretty cool Fiesta ST tuned by the guys over MRT.

The concept was designed as a stylish street performer updated with aftermarket parts and a pretty aggressive body kit that enhance its sporty reputation. The car is powered by an EcoBoost engine mated to a six-speed transmission and combined with a high-performance exhaust system. However, up to this point we can not tell you for sure the amount of power delivered by this Fiesta ST .

The car sits on 18-inch wheels from Rotiform and features a cool custom paint that combines green, black and some orange stripes.

At the SEMA show Ford also prepared a special Xbox One demo station that will allow visitors to play the Xbox One’s “Forza Motorsport 5,” which goes on November 22nd, but also to virtually test the Fiesta ST.

Mercedes CLA 45 AMG

The fact that both the new Mercedes A45 and CLA45 AMG models are enjoying a great success should be no surprise to anyone. After all this is the first time AMG is offering reasonable priced cars and also is the first time an AMG model is offered by an inline-four engine.

In a recent interview with Motoring, Mercedes-Benz AMG boss Tobias Moers confirmed that the company itself was a little bit surprised by the huge success the two models are enjoying: "For sure when you enter a new segment there is much interest. I was not surprised at the success of the cars... Well, maybe a little surprised... But the feedback from the distributors around the world for the next year [and beyond] – that was very surprising."

As a result, AMG will have to increase production to meet the expectations around the globe. You also have to keep in mind that next year Mercedes plans to introduce the new GLA 45 AMG model that will boost sales even more.

Moers also confirmed that the two models will not receive a Black Series version, because Black Series will be kept exclusive for the two-door models.

The Nissan Juke Nismo is a really surprising little machine. After a week with my foot on the floor (in ’normal’ mode), I was vaguely unimpressed with the little truck’s ability to hustle out of its own way. I thought it looked cool and handled well, had great seats and a good image. But... even the coolest car in the world still needs to be fast to get my attention, and yours too I bet.

Silly me. The TopSpeed team is mostly hard at work during the day producing news content, so the amount of miles we put on the press loaners is pretty low overall.

That extra time was exactly what I needed to discover the Juke Nismo’s sport buttons, which allow personalization of numerous parameters between normal, sport and eco.

Most sport buttons in mainstream cars are a waste of time. They might make the engine hold shifts longer, or thump harder over bumps - but generally achieve very little beyond that.

The Nismo sport tune is far from subtle, however. Cars have to generally start up in their ’Normal’ setting so that they can achieve the emissions and economy required by the test and buyers.

Flipping to Juke Nismo to Sport mode opens up a totally different little crossover. One that has front, AWD auto or even a V-mode all-wheel-drive setting to keep traction.

Skinny tires ensure more playfullness than is normal in a compact, and the sport mode also transforms the optional CVT auto of our test car into something much, much more special. It thrums and upshifts like a real sports car, with handling and steering precision on the highway that seems autobahn-ready.

A quick walk-around video of the Juke Nismo highlights some of the reasons I loved this car by the end of our time together. It also shows of an impressive exhaust rumble and all the Nismo-exclusive styling features of this $27,000 pocket rocket.
