hatchback

A hatchback is a type of automobile design, consisting of a passenger cabin which includes an integrated cargo space, accessed from behind by a hatch or flip-up window. Hatchbacks are also often called three-doors (two entry doors and the hatch) or five-doors (four entry doors and the hatch) cars.

A lot of companies are bracing for what should be a busy time at the 2013 SEMA Auto Show .

Certain companies are preparing to head to Las Vegas with an armada of concepts and project cars but Mazda is keeping things to a minimum, opting only to send four concepts to the show: two of the 2014 Mazda3 Hatchback and another two for the 2014 Mazda6 .

No specific details were given on any of the four concepts, but the images released by Mazda do point to relatively restrained projects compared to what we’ve been seeing from other companies in the past couple of weeks.

The two Mazda3s are designed more aggressively than the Mazda6 counterparts, including one that carries some nice decals and custom graphics that complements the new aerodynamic body it fitted into the vehicle. There appears to be a front splitter, revised side skirts, a new set of black alloy wheels, and high-performance brakes.

Meanwhile, the two Mazda6 models are a little more subdued than their 3 counterparts, including one that looks like it only received a two-tone "pinstripes" paint finish and a new set of wheels. The other one looks a lot more like what we’d expect out of a SEMA-bound model. It also has an aero kit to go with a sleek gray finish, and red and black accents. Black alloy wheels were also added, as were red brake calipers, which were made more noticeable by the "dark" appeal of the sedan.

Fortunately, all our speculations will be put on to rest once SEMA rolls around. For now, though, enjoy these photos Mazda released for us.

The SEMA Auto Show wouldn’t be complete without Bojix Design in the mix. The aftermarket company has, time and again, strutted its wares at the annual auto show in Las Vegas, and this year won’t be any different.

Yes, fellas, Bojix Design is coming back to SEMA with a new take on the Ford Fiesta ST. We’re saying ’new’ because Bojix seemingly makes it an annual ritual to bring a Ford to SEMA. Remember last year’s Focus project? We certainly do.

This year, the 2014 Fiesta is the subject and true to form, it has the kind of aggressive appearance that Bojix Design hangs its hat on. A comprehensive aerodynamic kit is part of the program, as you can probably see with the large front fenders, as well as the equally large wheel arches and side sills. A custom grey BASF paintjob is also part of the program, complemented nicely by black racing stripes with orange trims that you can also see on the mirror caps and the side doors of the Fiesta.

According to Ford, the project also comes with a coilover suspension, a cat-back exhaust system and a Banks Straight-Shot water-methanol injection system. No details have been given regarding the performance upgrade, but don’t be surprised if it packs the kind of output — 250 horsepower — last year’s Fiesta ST program had under its hood.

Chevrolet has just released word on several new vehicles for the world-famous SEMA show . Among them is this Spark EV Tech Performance concept. Sure it’s an all-electric Spark with no conventional gasoline engine, but don’t let that fool you.

This EV totes 400 pound-feet of tire-shredding torque with beefier axles and aluminum wheels that propel the hatchback from naught to 60 in 7.5 seconds. Even the holy grail of muscle cars - the1969 Camaro SS powered by a 350 cubic-inch, small-block V-8 didn’t produce torque numbers like that.

The Spark also comes with a unique power-delivery algorithm programmed into its computer that enhances acceleration. A custom exterior color and graphics help set the Spark EV apart, and a backlit Chevy ‘bowtie’ on the grille gives it a mean look at night.

Inside the Spark, Chevy added a few basic custom touches, like doorsill plates, floor mats and pedal covers. A military-style, flip-up “activation switch” on the dash adds excitement to starting the EV, and body-color stitching on the shifter boot and steering wheel help liven up the Spark’s interior.

At the 2011 SEMA Show , Ricky Carmichael unveiled his first Sonic All Activity Vehicle . Now two years later, Carmichael returns to SEMA with a new Sonic All Activiy Vehicle. This time around, it’s equipped with an all-new performance package with parts from Chevrolet Performance.

For the exterior, the concept features a satin-black paint combined with blue accents and custom graphics. The aerodynamic kit includes a new rear wing spoiler, smoked lamp housings, ground-effects package, a unique grille and a THULE roof rack For some, this may be a little over the top, but the stark contrast of dark and bright looks pretty sick to us. .

For the interior, Carmichael added a dark green and black leather instrument panel trim, door trim with lime green piping, a green- and black-trimmed, flat-bottom steering wheel and an upgraded sound system.

Chevrolet Performance installed its Turbo Stage Kit, a high-flow exhaust system and a cold-air intake for the 1.4-liter, turbocharged four-banger engine. The concept sits on an 18-inch wheel-and-tire package that are colored gloss-black with a green lip. Chevrolet didn’t release the performance details, but we’re willing to bet the power jumps from the base 138 horsepower to about 160 horsepower.

Helping in the twist is a a new suspension kit that drops the ride height. Rounding out the mods is a new brake package with Wilwood front calipers.

Lately we have been treated to a smorgasbord of SEMA -bound Fiesta STs, Ford is following that up with Fiesta ST’s big brother: the Focus ST .

Bigger, faster, and more powerful than the Fiesta ST, the Focus ST is the kind of car that gets treated to a wide range of aftermarket modifications. Translation: expect a lot of these bad boys at SEMA.

One such program that will be in attendance is the PM Lifestyle-tuned Focus ST.

In working on this Focus ST, PM Lifestyle wanted to give the sports hatch that "southern California car culture," which is to say that it’s going to come with a host of modifications designed to perform in road rallies. Together with Infinite Auto Design, PM Lifestyle went to work, giving the Focus ST a custom paint job from Axalta, to go with carbon fiber exterior pieces, a custom harness, Sparco seats with Schroth Racing, five-point harnesses and a set of 19-inch, Rotiform wheels wrapped in GT Radial Champiro tires.

Under the hood, PM Lifestyle sought the assistance of Banks Power, COBB Tuning and Ford Racing in giving the Focus ST a hellacious powertrain upgrade, highlighted by a Banks Power straight-shot water-methanol injection system.

No word yet on how much output this Focus ST is going to have but we expect nothing less than a spectacular program from the guys over at PM Lifestyle.

Mini decided to add some flavor to the Countryman and Paceman lineup and added a new Frozen Black metallic paint offered in a limited edition for the top models in the lineup. The new paint features a textured, shimmering matte finish and offers the Mini model a more expressive appearance.

Applying the new Frozen Black finish requires a special procedure, and Mini applies it in three layers: special surface treatment, color, then a clear lacquer finish. For the attached exterior parts, like the front and rear aprons and the exterior mirror caps the new Frozen Black metallic paint is applied separately.

This new paint is completely weather resistant and car wash resistant, but Mini advices against waxing or polishing it by hand. BMW BMW — Mini’s parent company — offers a special line of products developed for treating the Frozen Black metallic paint finish. Typical Bimmer move: specialize everything to maximize future profits.

Chevrolet Sonic may be a small car, but with the right updates, it can become quite mean and aggressive. A good example is this Sonic RS Concept car that will be unveiled at the 2013 SEMA Show on November 5th. The concept was designed by Chevrolet Performance, and it previews elements that will be available at all Chevrolet dealers.

The concept was updated from top to bottom, and it includes engine performance, suspension, brake and appearance upgrades. This Sonic RS is painted in a unique Lemon Peel Yellow hue combined with blue graphics, and tinted headlamps and fog lamps. The interior gets seats in black leather with Lark Yellow contrast stitching.

Under the hood, the 1.4-liter, turbocharged engine receives a Stage Kit, cold-air induction and a high-flow exhaust system that will allow it to deliver more power than its stock 138 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. Chevy is keeping the output level is being kept a secret for now, but we are thinking it’ll land in the 160-horsepower range.

Along with the engine upgrades, Chevy also equipped this sonic with a track-tuned suspension system that lowers the car’s ride and offers a sportier appearance. The concept sits on18-inch, split-five-spoke wheels combined with a higher-performance brake upgrade kit with Wilwood front calipers.

Everyone expected that once the new BMW 2 Series hit the market, that a more powerful M version would soon follow it. Our spy photographers caught some prototypes testing at Nürburgring, confirming the model. Now, just hours after revealing the 2 Series, BMW has lifted the veil off of the M235i.

Like the 1 Series Coupe preceded the 2 Series, the M135i and 1M preceded the M235i. Unfortunately, the M135i never available in the U.S., and the 1M Coupe was so limited that its order books closed nearly as fast as they opened.

The 1M Coupe was a mighty micro-Bimmer, with its twin-boosted, 3.0-liter, straight-six engine that tortured the concrete with 335 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. The M235i will use the same powertrain, but with its output slightly reduced to 322 horsepower.

The M2235i will be unveiled at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show and will ht the market at $44,025.

Updated 10/25/2013: This review was updated with the official details, images and specs.

Updated 05/12/2014: BMW officially announced today that a M235i xDrive version will be added to the lineup starting July 2014. The model will be offered with the same engine as the base version, but the sprint from 0 to 60 mph will go down to 4.6 seconds.

The 2013 SEMA Auto Show is shaping up to be a doozy and the word out of Ford is that the automaker will be bringing an armada of vehicles to Las Vegas.

Fifty-seven in total, in case you’re wondering, which is hugely significant considering that a lot of brands will be out in force themselves to showcase their latest aftermarket offerings.

One Ford model that will be well represented at SEMA is the automaker’s resident pocket rocket, the 2014 Ford Fiesta ST . From the looks of it, five unique Fiesta ST models will be showcased at the event, including one created and developed by an aftermarket company who’s no stranger to the lights of SEMA: Ice Nine Group.

We all remember the company’s program for the Ford Fusion that was displayed at last year’s event. This year, the tuning firm upped the ante with an incredible showcase of creativity and ingenuity wrapped up in a program for the Fiesta ST.

The car itself was transformed in the spirit of a rally car . Notice the Fiesta ST’s grille now has a pair of fog lamps installed on it. That’s not a happenstance addition, fellas. There’s also a carbon-fiber hood, huge fender flares and a rear wing, all of which were added to improve the car’s aerodynamic capabilities.

Meanwhile, the unique custom body wrap is the real highlight of the program, with Ice Nine Group opting for a confluence of colors (white, blue, orange, and black, mainly) that all combine to create a distinctive style and image. Rounding out Ice Nine Group’s take on the Fiesta ST are a new set of 17-inch Braid wheels wrapped in Falken Azenis RT615K tires.
