hatchback

A hatchback is a type of automobile design, consisting of a passenger cabin which includes an integrated cargo space, accessed from behind by a hatch or flip-up window. Hatchbacks are also often called three-doors (two entry doors and the hatch) or five-doors (four entry doors and the hatch) cars.

Limited-run vehicles always grab the attention of customers and even more so when one of these models are given a comprehensive aftermarket upgrade.

That’s the case with the Volkswagen Polo R WRC Street , a car that VW built to celebrate its return to WRC. But even with that, B&B decided that the car wasn’t special enough. So what does it do?

Well, it made it even more special, that’s what!

This the German pocket rocket already has enough stylish and mechanical digs to make consumers weep, but B&B opted to make it extra special, adding a host of upgrades to improve the car’s handling requirements. As such, the Polo R WRC Street now has a coilover kit, sports springs, stabilizers a high-performance braking system with four- or six-piston calipers and a new set of 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 225/35R18 tires.

But the real treat of this program is the comprehensive performance upgrade, highlighted by a Stage 3 kit that includes the installation of a bespoke high-pressure fuel pump and a sports exhaust system to go with a modified air suction system, a new high-performance intercooler and a different oil-cooling system. All told, B&B was able to bump up the output of the Polo R WRC Street from the standard 217 horsepower and 258 pound-feet torque output all the way up to a tidy 362 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque.

With those changes, this German spitfire is now capable of hitting 62 mph in just 5.2 seconds, a full 1.2 seconds faster than the ’standard’ model, to go with a top speed of 168 mph, up from 151 mph.

Audi S1

It’s been a while since we last caught the upcoming Audi S1 out and about testing, but today our spy photographers managed to spot it somewhere in on public roads in Germany and inside an Audi facility. Unlike the previous prototypes, this one dropped some of the camouflage and is getting closer to the final product.

The prototype caught testing today by our spy photographers is powered by a gasoline engine, most likely the 2.0-liter TFSI engine with somewhere in the 220- to 250-horsepower area. The power will be sent to all four wheels via Audi’s quattro system.

The new S1 will be offered to those customers interested in a sport hatchback, but whom haven’t had the chance to buy one of the 333 A1 Quattro units. The S1 will offer similar performance figures, but a milder and less extreme body kit.

The new Audi S1 is expected to be unveiled in early 2014 in both three- and five-door configurations.

With the launch of the new Renault Clio , it was only right for Renault to also give an update to its existing rally car , the Clio Renaultsport R3. After all, it’s been seven years since the R3 first hit the rally scene so it’s high time that a new one shows its face, right?

Well, Renault Sport Technologies is acquiescing and has released new information about the R3’s successor, the Clio Renaultsport R3T rally car. Set to launch in 2014, the R3T was built to comply with current FIA R3 regulations, which will now come with at least a turbocharged version of the car’s existing 1.6-liter engine that Renault Sport engineers have continuously adapted to racing specifications.

In addition to the revised engine, the R3T will also come with a host of modifications, specifically built and developed for rally purposes. Among these include a new six-speed sequential transmission with optional steering-wheel paddle shifters in the asphalt version, as well as specialized equipment, including Sadev gearboxes, Sachs shock absorbers, PFC brakes, and Cosworth electronics.

All these updates should give the Clio Renaultsport R3T an impressive package that will create interest from rally teams all over the world. The model isn’t expected to gain approval until the latter part of 2014, but Renault wants to make sure that the returns end up becoming worth the wait.

Hyundai has announced a set of upgrades for the 2014 Hyundai Veloster . Overall, the Veloster retains its shape with that gaping front grille and the oddball rear profile, but the big news is the addition of a Veloster Turbo R-Spec for next year.

This announcement was made during the on-going 2013 LA Auto Show . Hyundai claims, the "convention-shattering" Veloster adds convenience, performance and safety, making it more desirable than before. Well, its unconventional hatchback design never really struck a chord with our visual senses, but that’s just our opinion.

Since the Veloster Turbo ’s release, we’ve wondered if Hyundai would take advantage of the fast-growing hot-hatchback market in the U.S. and reveal a hotter variant. With the new R-Spec model, Hyundai did just that and then some, but the Korean automaker did not reveal all of its specs just yet.

The European version of the new-generation Honda Civic made its debut last year at the Frankfurt Motor Show. And today, just a few months after, our spy photographers have proof that Honda is preparing a a Type R version of the new Civic, as the caught a mule of the upcoming car near Honda’s technical center.

The first obvious differences are on the exterior. The mule features a big rear wing fitted over the rear window, bigger exhaust pipes and a deeper front spoiler that might indicate that this is just the first mule for the Civic Type R testing the chassis settings. The production version will also get a deep front spoiler, a new rear bumper with diffuser, wider and bigger wheels and sportier seats.

The next Civic Type R is said to be focused on track orientated customers. This means that Honda will focus on improving the chassis and the car’s handling, while the high-revving engine will probably deliver over 280 PS (276 horsepower).

Updated 09/11/2013: During its press conference at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, Honda offered the first official details on the Civic Type R set to be put on sale in 2015. According to the first details, the future Civic Type R will be powered by a direct-injected, turbocharged 2-liter engine that will deliver "at least 280 PS." While the official launch date is still far away, Honda unveiled a first video featuring the next Type R in action on Nurburgring.

Updated 11/19/2013: Honda has revealed the 2015 Civic Type R testing on the Nurburgring ahead of its debut at the 2013 Tokyo Auto Show. You can see the images after the jump.

Just yesterday, Mini unveiled the new-generation Cooper and it looks like engineers are already out testing another variant of the lineup: the Cooper Clubman . Our spy photographers managed to catch it, while being towed to a test facility.

Just like with the standard Cooper , the new Clubman will grow in all directions and will feature regular rear doors on both sides. What will remain unchanged are the two access doors to the cargo area, which is not necessarily a good thing, but it does give the Clubman a unique look.

As for the engine lineup, the Clubman will carry the same engines from the standard Cooper, including the three-cylinder engine and the usual four-cylinder in the Clubman S. The diesel version, which will likely not make it to the U.S., will also get a three-cylinder engine. All the engines will mate to a standard six-speed manual transmission, with a six-speed automatic transmission offered as an option.

Peugeot 208 GTi

The CEO of Peugeot, Maxime Picat has confirmed to Autonews that the French car maker will make an even hotter version of the 208 hatchback . It will be called the 208 R and Peugeot will place it a notch above the 208 GTi.

Now, the 208 GTi isn’t just a throwaway grocery getter, so to speak, it is as mental as the GTi badge on its hatch indicates. The Peugeot 208 is among the smallest and lightest of the micro-hatchbacks, and the GTi takes it one step further by giving it some poke.

The 208 R would pack even more punch than the GTi, enough to spin its front wheels on demand. Having said that, we don’t expect Peugeot to give it monumental levels of power, or it would just understeer wildly and ruin the fun.

To put it in perspective, the 208 GTi makes use of a 200-horsepower, 1.6 -liter engine, and its top speed is pegged at 143 mph with a dash from 0 to 60 mph taking 6.8 seconds. We expect the 208 R could use the same powerplant as the GTi albeit with a tweaked ECU to push out an extra 20 to 30 horsepower.

You would think that the Audi S3 , the company’s performance-oriented version of the A3, already has enough power under its hood to satisfy some customers.

While that may be true for some, others would want some extra juice, or in this case 70 horsepower’s worth.

That’s where ABT Sportsline comes into the picture. The German tuning firm has become one of the foremost Audi tuners in the world, and its latest take on the S3 just goes to show that the possibilities are endless if you know what you’re doing.

There aren’t a lot of aerodynamic changes done to the S3, as far as this program is concerned, but there’s always room for improvement on the performance front. ABT did so by installing its own ECU unit, jumping the power of the S3 Coupe to an impressive 370 horsepower and 339 pound-feet of torque. That’s a serious improvement from the standard 300-horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque output of the standard S3 Coupe.

With this, ABT slashed five-tenths of a second off of the S3’s 0-to-60 mph time, now hitting it at 4.6 seconds to go with a top speed of 165 mph.

With all the attention paid on the engine upgrade, it’s important to note that ABT also offering a new set of wheels for the S3 , with sizes ranging from 18 to 20 inches, as well as new fender inserts that ABT says underscores the car’s dynamic character.

With ABT, who are we to disagree.

You may recall the Golf VI GTI Razor 6 that RevoZport revealed to the world back in 2010? As its name suggests it was based on the Golf GTI VI , and it was all about bumping the engine’s total output.

With Volkswagen revealing the seventh-generation Golf GTI , RevoZport came with a new tuning kit, this time called of course Razor 7.

For the first time, the GTI is offered with two different level of power. As standard, the GTI’s 2.0-liter, turbocharged engine delivers either 220, but you can bump that to 230 horsepower with the Performance model. We think that even VW can admit that those numbers aren’t necessarily overwhelming.

This is where RevoZport comes into focus. It updated the turbocharged engine with an ECU remap, a new induction system and a titanium exhaust that weight just 22 pounds — 50 percent less than the stock version. This increases the 2.0-liter engine’s total output to 290 horsepower, which is much better suited for a hot hatchback like the GTI.
