There’s a serpent lying in the bushes. It remains out of plain sight, yet it’s unmistakably lethal and poised to strike at any time.

Translate that into the automotive parlance and you immediately understand that the car in question is the Hennessey Venom GT .

It’s been a little over a year since we last heard anything of relevance surrounding the Venom GT. Sure, it participated in the Goodwood Festival of Speed back in July, but other than that little cameo, the Venom GT has been uncharacteristically out of the spotlight for the better part of the year.

That is until now. Better yet, it’s arriving to the party as a Version 2.0.

The Hennessey Venom GT2 is coming! In an email exchange with Hennessey chief, John Hennessey, we were told that the Venom GT2 is poised to strike the auto world with a significant power increase over the Venom GT along with some design modifications.

According to Hennessey, the carbon- fiber body will still be used, but improvements are in the works for the 2014 GT2. These changes include dihedral hinges on the doors, exposed carbon fiber front air-dam, new hood with the center arch removed, new side-view mirrors, and a double bubble roof that will offer additional headroom.

The most significant aesthetic alterations for 2013 are the headlights. No longer will the Venom GT2 carry the Lotus Elise headlights. Instead, Hennessey has designed a completely original headlight setup that, quite frankly, makes the Venom GT2 that much more striking.

The other big news surrounding the Venom GT2 is the significant uptick in power it’s poised to receive. This increase is thanks to a new 7.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 powerplant that Hennessey is estimating to produce a staggering 1,500 horsepower. The engine will mate to either a 6-speed Ricardo manual or a new 7-speed paddle shift transmission. Top speed has been projected at an astounding 287 mph, which means that you could very well be reading about the future fastest car in the world.

According to Hennessey, the Venom GT2 should debut in late 2013.

With its 470 horsepower, the 6.4-liter HEMI V-8 engine from Dodge is one of the most awesome engines offered by the company. Most of you will agree that 470 horsepower is enough for the likes of the Challenger SRT8 , the folks over Hennessey are offering a supercharger kit that will increase the V-8 engine’s output up to an impressive 800 horsepower.

The kit comes in three different power levels and the first one is the HPE600. As its name suggests, this package delivers a total of 600 horsepower and includes a TVS2300 supercharger system, HPE air induction system, an ECU recalibration and new fuel injectors.

Next there is the HPE650. It takes the power level up to an impressive 650 horsepower and over the HPE600 package it adds in headers and high-flow catalytic converters.

The most powerful version is the HPE800. As you probably guessed, this version delivers a total of 800 horsepower. This package adds new forged aluminum pistons, forged steel connecting rods, cylinder head porting, balancing and blueprinting, fuel injectors, a twin turbo system, and a new exhaust system.

Along with the engine upgrades, each package will offer optional upgrades for the transmission, exhaust and braking systems. Hennessey will also be offering exterior and interior changes, plus a new set of wheels and tires.

Hennessey is truly in a class all their own. After delivering the sheer awesomeness that is the Venom based on the Lotus Elise , the company is gracing us with their keen sense of style and power by preparing another package, this time for the new 2013 SRT Viper.

The Viper-based package delivers the same kind of power upgrades as the ones found on the previous package, meaning there are two different power output to choose from. The Venom 700R increases the Viper’s output to an impressive 725 HP, while the Venom 1000 Twin Turbo delivers a mouthwatering 1,120 HP - that’s almost double the standard 640 HP offered by the 2013 Viper.

Like with the previous Venom packages, the new 700R and 1000 Twin Turbo kits provide more of a power update than anything else. The exterior updates are limited to a carbon fiber aerodynamic kit, including new spoilers, new splitters, and a very cool rear wing for the 1000 Twin Turbo version.

The Hennessey VR1200 Twin Turbo Coupe is a tough act to follow with its 1,226 HP and smooth Cadillac CTS-V base, but Hennessey has followed it up with a tamer tuning package based on the Mercedes CLS63 AMG . This package "only" - compared to the VR1200 - develops a total of 700 HP (up from the car’s standard 518 HP), but it is said to carry a "Earthy" feel.

The new HPE700 package will include an HPE air induction system modification, an HPE engine management calibration, an HPE stainless steel X-pipe exhaust modification, and an HPE engine management calibration. These items will be professionally installed and will also come with a three year warranty. Next to these updates, the HPE700 package also adds a new set of wheels, suspension upgrades, and a carbon fiber trim trim for any customers interested.

Hennessey is one of our favorite supercar builders of all times. Its engineers take cars that are already exciting, like the Lotus Elise, and turn them into monsters, like the Venom GT. Hennessey has again broken its own mold by taking a Cadillac CTS-V , an already bad-ass ride, and converting it into the VR1200 Twin Turbo Coupe.

This monster is fresh off of the press too, as Hennessey has just revealed all of its features and specifications. As expected from Hennessey, it produces incredible horsepower, torque, and speed numbers, plus it boasts extreme body modifications.

The real test is whether this VR1200 Twin Turbo Coupe really belongs in the Hennessey lineup and if it’s prepared to slay the likes of the Bugatti Veyron, Lamborghini Aventador, and the rest of the top supercars.

After taking a break for a few months, the TUNED series on the Drive YouTube channel was recently renewed for a second series. In order to kick off the new show with a bang, Matt Farah recently got his hands on the very first Hennessey Venom GT Spyder produced, owned by none other than Steven Tyler!

With only six Venom GT’s having been produced thus far, and with this being the very first convertible variant, it’s very rare that anyone would be allowed to drive such a car. Take into consideration that this is owned by the lead singer of Aerosmith, and it makes the following review all the more special.

As the following video isn’t a comparison of the Venom GT Spyder to any of its competitors, we’ll give you a little insight into Farah’s response to the car.

Farah initially notes that the Venom GT Spyder actually rides better than the Lotus Elise for which it’s based on and believes that the extended wheel base and extra rigidity may be responsible for those improvements. Furthermore, he confirms that it’s unquestionably the most exclusive and fastest car he’s ever driven and based on its top of the range specifications, we’re not surprised.

In top spec, the Venom GT Spyder utilizes the same twin-turbocharged Chevrolet-sourced V8 engine as its coupe sibling, which can pump out 1244 horsepower at 6,500rpm and 1,155 lb-ft of torque at just 4,200 rpm. When mated to the same Ricardo 6-speed transmission as found in the Ford GT , the Venom GT Spyder is said to sprint to 60 mph in just 2.5 seconds, before reaching 200 mph in 15.9 seconds. Top speed is claimed to be around 270mph.

A notable absentee from the recently concluded 2012 Goodwood Festival of Speed was Hennessey . The American supercar manufacturer and tuner debuted the incredible Venom GT at the show in 2011, and prior to the conclusion of this year’s event, company founder, John Hennessey was nice enough to post an awesome video capturing one of the Venom’s many sprints up the famous hill climb.

With a GoPro Hero camera mounted to the rear-end of the vehicle, Hennessey managed to capture the car’s incredible exhaust note in all its beauty. If you listen closely, you’ll hear the incredible sounds of the twin-turbochargers spooling up when the throttle is applied.

However, the swan-song of this video comes in the final seconds where the Venom GT shoots some impressive flames after the hillclimb helping to exemplify just how mean this supercar is.

Considering the Venom GT can deliver 1200bhp in top tune, it’s little surprise that the car spits flames as easy as this one. This incredible peak horsepower output is achieved thanks to a Corvette ZR1 sourced V8 engine fitted with two turbochargers. As a result, the Venom GT is said to sprint to 60 mph in just 2.5 seconds and Hennessey quotes a top speed of 275 mph.

Hennessey has just released an engine upgrade package specifically for the Mercedes AMG 5.5 liter biturbo V8 engine that will that will take your vehicle from hot to nuclear with just a few additions. The package is called the HPE700 and it increases the engine’s output from the standard 550 HP to an impressive 700 HP - hence the name.

As of right now, this engine powers the CLS63 , E63 , S63 , G63 , GL63 , ML63 , and SL63 AMG . In order to obtain this impressive upgrade, the tuner performed an HPE air induction system modification, HPE engine management calibration, and Dyno tuning. The update will get a 3 Year / 36,000 mile limited warranty. After all these updates, the V8 engine delivers a total of 700 HP at 5200 rpm and a peak torque 800 lbs-ft at 3,800 rpm.

Next to these engine updates, the tuner is also offering carbon fiber trim accessories and a new set of wheels combined with updated suspensions.

The sleek and sexy Hennessey Venom GT became a successful model in a very short time and Hennessey is hoping to repeat that success with an open top version of the same sports car. The new Hennessey Venom GT Spyder will be offered with a removable top and will only be produced in a limited run of five units, two of which have already been spoken for. Deliveries will begin in Summer 2012 and prices will start from $1.1 million, about $150,000 more than the Coupe’s top version.

The Venom GT Spyder will be powered by the same Chevrolet sourced V8 engine found in the Coupe with an output of 1,200 HP at 6,500 rpm and 1,155 lb-ft of torque at 4,200 rpm. Because of the added weight from the removable roof, performance numbers should be a tad bit slower than the Coupe, which sprints from 0-60 mph in 2.5 seconds and to 200 mph in 15.9 seconds, on its way up to a top speed of 275 mph. The engine will more than likely send its power to the rear wheels via a Ricardo 6-speed gearbox and handling will be facilitated by a KW variant three-adjustable coilover suspension.

As far as its design goes, the Venom GT Spyder will start off with the Lotus Elise base and will follow along the same extreme design lines as its Coupe sibling. We imagine it will also feature the same active aero system with adjustable rear wing that will deploy under varying conditions on both the road and racetrack.

"With the hardtop in place, the Venom GT offers a very visceral, raw, driving experience," said Hennessey CEO, Don Goldman. "With the hardtop removed, the wind and the growl of the twin turbo V8 will offer our clients an even greater driving sensation."

The 1,200 HP will make the Venom GT Spyder the most powerful convertible in the world. Will it also be the fastest? We believe it will, but Hennessey will have to keep that 275 mph top speed intact.

The Hennessey Venom GT has already promised to be one of the craziest, fastest, and most incredible supercars to have ever of come out of such a small production facility in the U.S. for decades. And it’s only been in production for a few months.

Yet, Hennessey has yet to deliver upon any of its promised performance capabilities, but that hasn’t stopped the firm from already developing its first variant of the car, with the Venom GT Spyder, and with deliveries of the exotic car set to begin soon, the tuning firm recently took the car to the dyno and fortunately, The Smoking Tire was there to capture it all.

The particular unit in question is actually the black car recently ordered by Aerosmith rocker, Steven Tyler and is undergoing its final stages of development before being delivered in the following weeks.

As we’re sure you know, the Venom GT is a true, rear-wheel drive, V8 monster and managed to pump out 839 horsepower and 745lb-ft at the rear wheels running on pump gas and only medium boost. It’s currently unclear which performance package Tyler selected for the car as it’s available either in 725HP, 1000HP, or 1200HP options, but based off the results we’d estimate Tyler selected the 1200 horsepower variant, as race gas and full boost could definitely add an extra 300-odd horsepower.

On top of the incredible exhaust note produced by the car, the following video also shows the Venom GT Spyder shooting some incredibly-impressive flames from its rear, demonstrating that it really is a performance car.
