The Accord->ke237, next to Civic->ke236, has the longest history in Honda->ke34's lineup. Unveiled for the first time in 1976, the model is currently in its ninth generation and it's showing no signs of slowing down. The model evolved with every passing year, and has become one of the premier midsized sedans in the U.S., but its long-time competitor, the Toyota Camry->ke246, still gives it a good run for its money.

The 2014 Accord brings no major updates from the 2013 model, with the only improvement being the addition of premium fabric for the seats on the LX sedan. The rest remains identical to what we saw in the 2013 model year, including the exterior colors and engine lineup.

For the 2014 model year the Accord comes in six trim levels -- LX, Sport, EX, EX-L, EX-L V-6 and Touring -- with prices ranging from $21,955 to $32,400.

Exterior

The ninth-generation Accord uses the highest amount of high-strength steel of any car in history, making it more comfortable, better handling and safer. The Accord also features a sophisticated and athletic design to go along with stellar aerodynamics.

The 2014 Accord has available plenty of high-end features, like LED headlights, daytime running lights and brake lights, and mirror-mounted turn signals. Honda slightly redesigned the grille from last year's model, giving it a smile-shaped chrome strip.

On the rear, V-6 models get dual exhaust pipes, while all models will get chrome insertions above the license plate.

Under the hood, the 2014 Accord offers a choice of two engines: a direct injected, 4-cylinder engine, and a powerful and fuel-efficient V-6. The base, 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine delivers a total of 185 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 181 pound-feet of torque at 3,900 rpm. The optional 3.5-liter, V-6 version produces 278 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 252 pound-feet of torque at 4,900 rpm. Depending on the trim level the two engines can be combined with either a six-speed manual transmission or a CVT for the top trims.

The Accord offers the best ever fuel economy for the model, with the four-cylinder models delivering 27 mpg city and 36 mpg highway with the CVT. The V-6 model checks in at 21 mpg city and 34 mpg highway with the CVT.

Competitors

Toyota Camry

Currently in its seventh generation, Toyota Camry is offered with a choice of two engines: a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine for the base versions and a 3.5-liter, V-6 engine on upper trims. The four-cylinder engine delivers a total of 178 horsepower, while the V-6 version delivers 268 horsepower.

The model is priced from $22,235.

Chevrolet Malibu

The Malibu is another model with a long tradition, as Chevy produced it between 1964 and 1983, then again between 1997 and 2014. Just like the Accord, the Malibu improved over the years, so that for the 2014 model year it got better than ever.

The Malibu is offered with a choice of two engines: an Ecotec 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine with direct injection that delivers a total of 196 horsepower and a 2.0-liter, turbocharged engine that delivers 259 horsepower.

The Malibu is priced from $22,140.

Conclusion

While updates for the 2014 model year are minimal, the Accord remains one of the best midsized sedans on the market. It looks good, runs well and has plenty of power, but it is lacking a good bit inside its cabin.
