RMR is working on a V8 Powered Hyundai Genesis Coupe for SEMA

The world’s greatest aftermarket car show, SEMA, is fast approaching and in an attempt to follow up their Hyundai Genesis Coupe Concept from last year’s show, the team at the Huntington Beach based race shop, Rhys Millen Racing, is hard at work gutting a brand new coupe with the hopes of giving it some V8 power. Now even we here at Top Speed have toyed around with the idea of transplanting the 4.6 Liter Tau V8 into the new Genesis coupe in order to create the ultimate Korean hot rod, but where we would consider trying to squeeze the almost 400 HP power plant in between the suspension towers with an oversized shoe horn, the Genesis aficionados at RMR have decided to forego the complicated packaging job and skip the Camaro crowd and turn the Genesis Coupe into a much more exotic mid engine sports car.

The mad mechanics at RMR have already gotten seriously underway, literally dissecting the car’s floor pan behind the front seats and added quite a few feet of chassis strengthening square tubing to accommodate the new hole in the underside of the car and in order to handle the car’s newfound power. The purose of the build is to make the most out of Hyundai’s factory pieces and RMR is looking to keep things simple with the new Coupe, so the only modification to the engine will be a set of slightly higher compression JE Pistons and with a little tweaking of the engine management software, the new RMR Genesis Coupe sould produce around 450 HP. The Tau V8 will be mated to a Mendeola S5 five seed sequential gearbox; the same transaxle used in the Ultima GT-R super kit car and will be geared so that the Coupe will be able to reach a top speed of 182 MPH.

Video: Climb Attack

The World Drifting Champion Rhys Millen recently raced his new highly modified RMR powered Hyundai Genesis coupe up the 12.4 mile hill climb course that consists of over 150 turns, many of which have no safety barrier and the consequences of running wide is a quick trip down the side of the mountain. However the multi disciplined driver had no prooblem tckling the hill, and broke the record for a 2WD Time Attack production based car in his 17th attempt conquering Pikes Peak, reaching the finish line in 12 minutes and 9.39 seconds.

Restyled Hyundai Genesis Spied

They Hyundai Genesis sedan stole the show last year taking home many automotive journal’s car of the year awards for its ability to blend attractive styling and high end luxury in a resonably priced package. With the scheduled arival of the Equus, Hyundai will now hava a slew of upsclae offerings for new car buyers. Despite the warm reception that the Genesis received last year, a new car only has the ability to make one first impression, so you can expect to see the classic curvilinear shape and signature waterfall grill going through a few restlings as the Genesis ages in order to keep the design fresh and at the forefront of consumer’s consiousness.

This next generation of Hyundai’s flagship sedan was spotted in the deserts of the mid west, most likely undergoing extensive cooling system analysis along with the new Equus. The Genesis is hiding both its nose and rear quarters draped with the traditional black automotive camoflage that makes most spy photographers either jump for joy at the sight of a new car or swear in frustration at not being able to capture what lies beneath. In this case it looks to be a pair of restyled fenders and maybe even a redesigned set of headlights judging by the careful placement of the disguise. However the most interesting feature of this clothed beauty is the black flap in the middle of the grill.

Brand new Corvette Z06 + Wife driving Hyundai Genesis = Marital Issues

Buying a brand-new Corvette Z06 should be a cause for celebration. But in the case of this poor man, his joyous occasion ended up becoming short-lived - thanks to his wife and her Hyundai Genesis.

Barely an hour after driving off with his new ride, the man’s precious Corvette was in the middle of a roadside accident thanks in large part to a combination of rain, traffic, and his wife’s reckless driving. The resulting carnage could end up costing the couple more than $26,000 in damages to the two vehicles.

The series of unfortunate events began when the couple left the Chevy dealership and ended up stuck in traffic along a rainy Massachusetts freeway. As the traffic began piling up, the husband decelerated his speed to queue up behind the other vehicles in the freeway. Unfortunately for him and his brand-new Z06, the wife, who was following behind in their 9-month old Genesis, wasn’t paying enough attention to the roads ahead and ended up ramming her car onto the back of the Z06, which, in turn, slid forward and hit the car directly in front of him.

Rumor: Future Hyundai Accessories line?

1.

Top Speed recently had the opportunity to speak with Hyundai’s Product PR Manager, Miles Johnson, about the company’s first ever true sports car, the Genesis Coupe. When we spoke, he highlighted the Coupe’s unique position in the market as an affordable performance machine. He also talked a lot about the tuning potential of turbocharged four cylinder model, an engine he guaranteed would hold up to at least 300 HP worth of boost.

Mr. Johnson talked about how the Genesis Coupe is a vehicle that will be embraced by the aftermarket; how Hennessey is already knocking down their door to build a turbo kit for the V6 powered Genesis Coupe GT. The only question is; with all the new found enthusiasm for tuned Genesis Coupes, will Hyundai embrace the aftermarket?

Video: Gensis Coupe testing

Top Speed recently had the opportunity to test the Hyundai Genesis Coupe V6, the car that World Drift Champion Rhys Millen is currently campaigning in the Formula DRIFT series. Check out the video of the Kiwi dialing in his new ride.

2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe Introduction with Miles Johnson

As you already know, we recently had the opportunity to test Hyundai’s 2010 Genesis Coupe. We thought who better to tell you a about the new vehicle than the man responsible, Hyundai’s Product PR Manager, Miles Johnson. The Korean sport compact comes with either a turbocharged four cylinder or a 300 HP V6. The car is well styled and looks like nothing you have ever seen before. But best of all, the new car offers rear wheel drive excitement at an affordable price complete with an outstanding warranty.

Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 V6 track package first impression

We just got back from driving the 3.8 Liter V6 powered Hyundai Genesis Coupe, and let me tell you, this car has plenty of power. After stepping out of the four cylinder and into the six, we see what Hyundai was trying to create with their new sport compact. The more powerful motor is a better match for the coupe’s outstanding handling abilities, and brings the most out of the new vehicle.

Whereas the turbo four was fun to drive, the V6 is outstanding. First of all the sound of the exhaust is amazing, compared to the turbo motor, the 300 HP six cylinder has a bark that would make V8 owners jealous. The added torque of Lambda engine is enough to plant you into the seat back. Whereas the 275 series tires seemed a little wide for the 210 HP turbo four cylinder Genesis Coupe, the added power is enough to break them loose and have a little fun.

The V6 in our test car is the same engine found under the hood of the RMR drift car, except the drift car is making 500+ HP with the help of a little boost, on the stock internals. After taking the six cylinder for a drive we fully understand why Hennessey and HKS are so eager to make performance parts for the Lambda powered coupe.

Before you lay down the cash for the turbocharged four cylinder Hyundai, take the V6 for a test drive. You will be pleasantly surprised. With this power plant Ford Mustangs and Chevy Camaros better keep up their game, because with the Genesis Coupe, it is now possible to get big bang for your buck, without having to buy domestic.

Hyundai Genesis Coupe turbocharged track package first impression

So, we have just stopped for lunch, and I have to say that the 4 cylinder turbo Genesis Coupe is sweet. The car we were test driving was equipped with the track package, so it gets a firmer suspension, 19 inch rollers and a set of beautiful red Brembo brakes. The interior of the Coupe exceeded my expectations; the racing style buckets are supportive, the center stack is filled with attractive smooth plastic pieces and the sunroof really opens up the interior. The only thing missing is a boost gauge.

The exterior of Hyundai’s new sport compact is the perfect blend of style and aggression. However, the most impressive thing is the ride in this sport coupe, it is smooth and comfortable, even with the stiffer shock and spring set-up and low profile tires. The Genesis Coupe is definitely a step up from previous Hyundai offerings.

After lunch we are getting into a 300 HP V6 version, stay tuned for a performance comparison a little later on today.

Hyundai Genesis Coupe update

Well, we’re about to take the new Genesis Coupe for our first test drive, but before we tell you all about that, let me whet you appetites with a couple a things to look forward to. Hyundai sees the new rear drive coupe as the succesor to Nissan’s now defunct 240SX.

The vehicle’s product manager Miles Johnson the 30 MPG, 2.0 Liter turbo should be able to handle a tuned 300 ponies. Both the boosted 4 and the V6 have been dialed back to conserve both gas and oil, meaning that there is a lot left to squeeze out of the power plants.

Look forward to twin turbo kit from Hennessey and a bodykit from Rhys Millen Racing. There are even talks about a Greddy show car for SEMA.

This should be fun!
